Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

Remember the Berlin War -- people would be shot going over the wall but they did it anyways. What makes anyone think that building a wall would keep people out? All they would have to do is get to Canada and cross over from Canada in any number of places.

There was someone who posted an excert from, I believe, National Alliance, stating their need to infiltrate sites such as FR. These types are really good at stating things such as immigration reform, that everyone agrees with, before getting on to their Nazi agenda. They are here. Thanks to JimRob for keeping up the guard and all the vigilant Freepers who keep this from becoming a joke of a website. I get most of my ACCURATE news here and I want it to stay that way

"So why would Jim ban us, and not them?"

I don't think JR is going to ban anyone for speaking the truth -- especilly when the issue is as it relates to "conservatism."

Kindly explain what you suggest the United States should do about Mexico, then.

The Mexicans know full well that the moment any controls are placed on immigration that either they pack their bags and get over to Europe quickly or they make some very quick reforms. There is no other reason that all prosperity and hope for opportunity comes to a screeching halt when you reach that southern border except that Mexico has an extremely corrupt government and system.

We cannot continue solving all Mexico's vast and growing social problems --- just because they wish to keep things just the way they are.

How does it get paid for?

Cost was not the reason the Berlin wall was brought up - and you know it.

As far as paying for one is concerned, if the Isrealis can afford it so can we.

I think devoting the $1700 per yer per illegal for education & medical we currently are paying would be a great start.

I'm genetically unable to "connect" with Anglo-Saxons.

Well, I think you were outed as a half breed Celt or something, and the Anglo Saxon tribe has historically had some diaagreements with Celts.

Moving right along, there is a racist element to it, but it is more nativist than racist, and more a manifestation of economic fear than nativist. In some fields of endeavor, the latter fear has some empirical justification, in the short run, and for those slaving away, the short run matters when it comes to economics.

The key here is to try to defuse rather than infuse. The latter is a cul-de-sac.

And there you have it.

But we DID have a program in which people from one country (Mexico) were able to work here. And back then, the border with Mexico was not as big of a problem as it is now.

I suggest the lack of such a program and the present problems are connected. If you disagree, please explain why.

I, personally, find this oligarchy business to be nonsense.

MILLIONS a year of very desperate people fleeing one of the world's richest nations, dying by the hundreds to get out, one fifth of their population already here yet immigration is growing all the more desperate, Vicente Fox demanding more more more --- doesn't convince you there is a problem?

Sandy, you ought to hold up the mirror to reflect on those who battle as a cabal.

Now if you are not privy to an original disagreement, then why make a judgement?

Sending the braceros back did not harm Mexico --- nor did it harm the USA --- the years after the braceros returned home were actually far better years for Mexicans than the recent years are --- The 70's was the last decade of much optimism in Mexico.

Why not? It's a public board, and therefore a public discussion. I was simply making a suggestion, but clearly you want to continue fighting, so go for it.

'Night, all.

I have seen tons of debate here and so they must be throwing them off some other site but not Free Republic. That's bogus.

Canada used to be a more compatible cultural integration. However, it's socialist system and anti-Christian religion legal system are not making potential immigrants any easier to integrate into our country.

So, I think your complaints about Canadian illegal immigration are valid.

My problem with Mexican illegal immigrantion are mainly these cultural integration problems:

Mexico has a history of left wing politics that slobber over the poor but actually enable poverty. Uneducated Mexicans are more likely to think the "government" should do something about a problem, and not understand that they are the government, and they have to pay for what they vote for.

They also have a burden from their Spanish conquerers, remnants of Spanish culture-- the macho problem and aristocracy vs peasant problem.

IMO, America was lucky that it was founded by Protestants who believed the poor were not noble but maybe rather lazy or stupid. And it was lucky that the North won the Civil War before the rising Southern new aristocracy versus peasant (slave) culture could get more deeply rooted. And finally it was very lucky that Napoleon needed money and sold us much of America for a song, and that Monroe was smart enough to leap up and pay the piper (taking no credit, letting Jefferson have the legacy.)

There absolutely is no lack of a program. We get far more legal immigrants from Mexico than from any other country, we have more green card workers from Mexico than from any other country. None of it's doing Mexico any good --- and a new program isn't suddenly going to do anything either.
