TEHRAN - Seven drug traffickers have been hanged publicly in a park in the south-eastern Iranian city of Zahedan, the Kayhan evening newspaper reported.
It said the men had been found guilty of involvement in international narcotics trafficking and attacks on security forces.
They were hanged in Zahedan's Laleh Park.
Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan province, is close to Iran's border with Afghanistan and Pakistan and on one of the main international heroin smuggling routes.
At least 94 people have been executed in Iran this year, according to reports in Iran's main newspaper.
Amnesty International has reported that at least 108 executions took place in 2003 and 113 in 2002.
Murder, armed robbery, rape, apostasy and serious drug trafficking are all punishable by death in Iran.

Wow. Never did I think I would suggest the United States should emulate anything Iranian. But, you have to admit, it does have its merits!!!
Heck we just put the WOD threads in the Smoky Backroom.
Fair enough.
Now if they'd just stop whacking their teenage girls for getting raped...
I wonder how many of these prisoners were dealing in the drug of "democracy"...?
Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.
There is something after all that America can learn from the M.E....
Cool, now bring it here and apply it to spammers and telemarketers.
They may have been selling American made Aspirin
hmm...drugs bads, beating women and beheading prisoners okay.
Well...hmm i guess they are off to the right track...To bad they can't do this with terrorist...hell too bad we can't do that with terrorists
HEY! (*kaff* *kaff*) That's not cigar smoke!
Yeah. You can kill and torture people as long as you're not stoned.
Yep - even third-world thug countries can do something that makes sense sometimes.
I have always been of the belief that we should expand the list of "capitol crimes" and bring back the gallows. When it takes 15+ years to execute those sentenced to die, something is wrong with the system.
Executing drug criminals, this is commendable.
LOL! Some spammer read your reply and is thinking, "when they pry my keyboard from my cold dead fingers."

Tackling Iran's heroin habit
Iran has the highest proportion of heroin addicts in the world and a growing Aids problem.
"Oh, how I wish we could be more like Iran!!"
I just have to wonder how many of those "drug traffickers" were actually missionaries and/or evangelists.....
From the BBC article linked in post #17:

Dr Arash Alaei runs a clinic in Tehran, where he caters for the growing number of drug addicts and prostitutes who are infected with the virus.
It takes him to parts of Iran which are never seen in the west, where junkies sprawl on streets littered with needles.
Iran has the highest proportion of hard drug users of any country in the world.
Some estimates put the number of users as high as three million - one in 20 of the population.
Junkies are a common site on the streets of the major cities. Prostitution, too, is commonplace.
