7 Dead in High Speed Car Chase
Sierra Vista Police Department ^ | Unpublished | HiJinx

Posted on 10/16/2004 2:37:27 PM PDT by HiJinx

This is breaking. A high speed chase around Sierra Vista and on to Ft. Huachuca has resulted in 7 deaths and 14 injuries.

A stolen car with 5 people inside led police on a high speed chase along the Highway 90 bypass and on to Ft. Huachuca at speeds in excess of 100MPH.

The stolen vehicle hit new barricades at the East Gate Checkpoint and crossed over the median, striking an outbound vehicle.

4 people in the stolen car have died, and 3 other people are also dead. 14 people are injured.

There are no further details regarding the 3 dead or the injured. As the story develops, I will try to post more.

The cops chased down and caused the death of that football player right near where I live.

Does being a football player make some kind of difference if he was just another thug carjacking a car and driving off with it? The thief caused his own death whether he played football or not.

I know there are bad cops (I live just outside of New Orleans, of course I know that). However, I believe the vast majority of cops are honest and decent. I think it is very, very rare for a law abiding citizen to be harmed by "out of control cops", even in New Orleans.

They should've radioed ahead for roadblocks or something.

It was a roadblock - at the entrance to a military installation - that killed them.

I don't want police using rockets and machine guns ala Hollywood thrillers.

I don't want criminals getting away with breaking the law.

Anything more than that is not a stated position of mine.

That's a really bad car chase. Whoever did this, is a freaking idiot.

And what we except as police officers today is ridiculous. These are people you wouldn't trust $100 decision with most of the time.

Ah ha. You are prejudiced against cops? Why? I have met but one policeman in my life that I wouldn't trust. The others I know are terrific citizens and good guys and have to put up with all kinds of crap from what Rush would call "endless parades of human debris" and still get blamed if the criminals get away with too much. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I for one am sick and tired of listening to folks like you complaining about them when they are doing their best and putting their lives on the line in our communities to keep us safe.

What's going on around here? Lately, after someone posts, about ten of the replies are post police who don't bother to read the original, or they have a problem with the way it's posted. Is there some contest I'm not aware of? Use the abuse button and move on! Also on the rise is the hard-assed "attack" posts...

Whew, sorry, rant mode off...

What happens when the Sun goes down?

Again, I stated, "when dangerous, *high speed* pursuits have air support in place, the ground units should back way off, follow at a distance." At night, they use night sun and FLIR. Works excellent.

BTW, Joe, as concerned as you always seem to be about "pursuing" illegal immigrants hither and yon throughout the width and breadth of our southern border, I must say I'm a little surprised by your take on this one. I hasten to add that I don't disagree with your position on illegal immigration, for the most part, but your stated opinion here, in light of that, is a tad confusing.

Not confusing at all. It's just too many innocents have been killed and busted up pursuing minor violators that don't feel like going to jail. Same with illegals or anyone else. If there is air support, and the pursuit gets too dangerous, they ought to back off, let the air support do their job, directing the ground units to where the suspect exits the vehicle. Again, even if ground units are right on top of the suspect at the termination of pursuit, the suspect can still exit his vehicle and walk/run straight into a building, if he does not point a fire arm at the police. If LEOs suspect that someone is armed, they are not going to attempt and arrest until the suspect gives up, ie hands up etc.....

If you assume when you see a cop that you can't "trust him with a $100 decision" then you ARE prejudiced against them. And what the heck does race have to do with it??

Guess you've been to NJ. State troopers don't even need the prerequisite two years of college. Minorites can count life experience instead?????????? Whatever the hell that means.

Remember, the good guys have to follow the BOZO in these high speed pursuits. If the bozo is going through stop signs in residential neighborhood going 85 MPH, would you want to pursue them? Not only dangerous for the suspect, but anyone on the street, *INCLUDING* the LEOs life.
