7 Dead in High Speed Car Chase
Sierra Vista Police Department ^ | Unpublished | HiJinx

Posted on 10/16/2004 2:37:27 PM PDT by HiJinx

This is breaking. A high speed chase around Sierra Vista and on to Ft. Huachuca has resulted in 7 deaths and 14 injuries.

A stolen car with 5 people inside led police on a high speed chase along the Highway 90 bypass and on to Ft. Huachuca at speeds in excess of 100MPH.

The stolen vehicle hit new barricades at the East Gate Checkpoint and crossed over the median, striking an outbound vehicle.

4 people in the stolen car have died, and 3 other people are also dead. 14 people are injured.

There are no further details regarding the 3 dead or the injured. As the story develops, I will try to post more.

The cops caused him to get burned alive and could have killed any number of other people on the Thruway that day.

How about a kill switch put in autos upon manufacture? With satellite tech. these days, ya call up OnStar and say, trigger the switch. Auto dies, end of chase.

Put the onus for these tragedies where it belongs: on the criminals who choose to run, not the police.

Absolutely right. Stop being cowardly. If they weren't breaking the law why would they run. Call a spade a spade and a criminal a criminal. Throw the fools in jail!

They ought to just stop these high speed chases, they are so dangerous.

It was not the chase that killed the knuckleheads in the fleeing car. The report stated:

" The stolen vehicle hit new barricades at the East Gate Checkpoint and crossed over the median, striking an outbound vehicle."

Military posts today have barriers -- typically pop-up barriers -- at all entrances. Even Ellington, which is a reserve base at Houston has a wicked set of barriers you have to pass over.

If you try to run the gate guard, up come the barriers. And they pop up FAST. These guys were trying to enter a military post, without stopping to show who they were. They might have been soldiers assigned to the post -- I doubt it because they would have known what those barriers could do, but even soldiers get stupid from time to time. Equally they could have been terrorists -- again, I doubt it, but it is not the gate guard's responsibility to see that anyone who runs the gate enters the base safely. It is the guard's responsibility to STOP unidentified people from entering.

May have been military dependants, but more likely some locals who did not work at the base, and thought that they could use it as an immunity zone.

Could it be the "running from police for no appearent reason" part?

You could have put it "my stupid friends failed to stop for the police, decided to run and were killed in a highspeed crash during the chase."

They started it and were killed by their own stupidity.

Sorry, you're wrong. Plain and simple.

The permissiveness in your posts is indicative of much of what is wrong with our Society today.

You break the law, you pay the price. No ifs, ands, or buts. When you cause death or injury to innocents, you pay even more.

No, he had no warrents. I think the cops spotted him taking a sip of beer.

Oh - just drinking while driving. Nothing there at all. Idiot.

The most ridiculous statement I have ever seen posted on any forum. We DO NOT live in a POLICE STATE.

Police in this Country are out of hand. That isn't a political position. That is a simple fact. From checkpoints to speed traps to you name it. Police are out of control.

We don't live in a police state; however, we are required to obey the laws of the land. Obeying is not an option, not even for democRATS. There maybe be a small percentage of police who are out of control. That doesn't change the law. Get rid of the bad cops and obey the laws. Period!

No, I am not. If your car was stolen, you can call up onstar and have them track it. Why not a kill switch they can trigger to shut the car off? Not a big leap from unlocking doors to turning off an ignition.

Problems with this! The chopper loses visual contact if there are high buildings, etc. This gives the guy time to run into a parking garage of whatever and run on foot.

I can understand a news chopper losing a visual, as they are directed to keep their distance, but a pursuing PD chopper seldom loses a visual. Besides, even with ground units in close pursuit, the bad guy can still exit his vehicle and run into where ever he pleases if he's armed. Cops generally don't shoot a fleeing felon unless he points his firearm at them. A fleeing suspect with ground units right behind him can walk out of his vehicle and into a building and little can be done, unless he directs a firearm at them. I've seen it happen many times.

Some pursuits become so dangerous, that they have no choice but to back off, and they do this occasionally without air support.

This kill switch idea will be standard in many cars in the next few years -- saw something on TLC or Discovery channel about it. Not quite the way you described it, but very similar.

In broad daylight and with no inclement weather hampering air pursuit, perhaps a case could be made for such a policy. Unfortunately, the police don't choose the conditions under which criminals decide to flee: the criminals themselves do. What happens when the Sun goes down?

BTW, Joe, as concerned as you always seem to be about "pursuing" illegal immigrants hither and yon throughout the width and breadth of our southern border, I must say I'm a little surprised by your take on this one. I hasten to add that I don't disagree with your position on illegal immigration, for the most part, but your stated opinion here, in light of that, is a tad confusing.

I can't believe the cops kept pursuing at these speeds. They should've radioed ahead for roadblocks or something.
