Regarding the ability to actually foresee or predict different types of specific threats, imagination is definitely required. Some bureaucratic bean counters have a hard time seeing beyond the end of their own noses RE threat delivery methods. Few "in the know" guessed that OBL would use planes as flying bombs. To their credit, some people DO have the imagination to predict threats better than some of our "esteemed" leaders.

Regarding courage, we need more boots on the ground for Human Intelligence gathering in the terrorist's own back yards rather than electronic intercepts. And that job requires nerves of steel and unparalled courage in some cases. It can be a very dangerous job, of course. http://www.spacewar.com/2004/041014172339.a1q18gy4.html

Most of the data collection is coming from hard work being done in the field.

Meanwhile, as we found in the news the other day, at least one of our esteemed political leaders plans to bug out of Washington around Election time based on old, unconfirmed intelligence reports with no specific threat cited. The fear and lack of courage is quite apparent in some cases. Nothing like saving one's own skin when others are risking theirs. Go figure.

Absolutely. Wild Bill Donovan, where are you when we need you?

Mexico ain't the easiest way. Canada's much easier

If we close the northern border, they will come through the southern border. So I have an idea. Let's do everything at once.

Bolt the front door, bolt the back door, lock the windows and start a fire in the fireplace.

Al Qaeda is slow, but they learn. We have to anticipate what the enemy will do before they do it.

Illegal immigration is part of the terrorist problem. Not only does it provide a conduit for terrorists, it also provides a breeding ground on our home turf.

We need to do a lot of things. A lot of it is highly political. We need stop putting out bait for foreigners to enter our country, free handouts and illegal jobs.

We need do away with minimum wage laws so that honest Americans will be able to take the jobs of illegals. And FReepers need to have the courage to come out and say what they mean instead of couching it in vague terms.

Your post reminded me of a story I read yesterday:

Mom aids in hunting terrorists over Web

By Neil Doyle
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Referred to by her spy masters only as "Mrs. Galt," she is by day an unremarkable American housewife and mother.

But after her two children go to bed, she plunges into a secret world of Internet chat rooms and Web sites populated by some of the most dangerous people on earth.

Burrowing into the byzantine network of unpublicized Web sites used by al Qaeda and other terror groups for their routine communications, she sweet-talks her interlocutors into revealing their plans, often with fatal consequences for the terrorists.

Not many can hold a candle to Wild Bill, but Kerry wouldn't even make an abscess on his butt.

I was wondering about that too. The story sounds a little fishy.

BorderRanchRescue is doing some good work in Arizona. What about these citizen groups? Something like neighborhood watch programs?

Yet another ignorant comment.

Thanks for warning me about the content of your post.

We have to sell border security?? We have to convince these politicians that our borders are a security risk?

No, you have to convince the voters that it's important enough to do something that (a) will be expensive and (b) will personally inconvenience a fair number of those same voters.

There are millions pouring into our country from God knows where. We have to sell border security?

If you want the electorate to sign off on actually doing it, yes.

Huh? During war time yet? We have to sell this?

Yup.

Take terrorist out of the border mix, just for a moment. This never ending flood of millions are choking off our highways, our schools, our hospitals, our jobs, our social services, our jails, and everything else. The crime and fraud is epic thanks to our leaders that pander to this coast to coast lawlessness......

And just who votes for those leaders, Joe? If the voting public was as concerned about border security as you claim it to be, President Tancredo would be looking at winning all 50 states by at least 20 points on November 2nd.

Now Poobah says we have to sell this open border lunacy as a terrorist threat?

No, I'm saying that if you sell closing off the Mexican border as an antiterrorism measure, you're committing fraud--because it will not actually stop terrorists, just as locking your front door will not stop burglars if you insist on leaving your back door and windows open.

Including the beaches?

Congratulations, you just lost most of the FR anti-illegal-immigrant bloc right there...and, I suspect that will hold true across the fruited plain.

I have been trying vainly to make this point for over a year and it just goes right over the heads of the Mexican-obsessed.

Wouldn't do any good to secure the Canadian border and not the Mexican, either.

Agreed. But no one even TOUCHES the Candian border--they just obsess on Mexican terrorists...

Read Tom Clancy's "Teeth of the Tiger?"

Yeah. It's fiction. Not even his best fiction.

"Yeah. It's fiction."

Yeah, that's what they said about the one where the guy flew the airliner into the capitol building.

Fiction it may be, but it also looks like a pretty good guess at what's coming next. Might be schools instead of malls, but terrorists would have to be complete morons to pass on it.

Here's an article relevant to this discussion that may be of interest to all.

Mexico al-Qa'ida 'back door' to US

http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,11085314%255E401,00.html

Check out this excerpt:

"If they're deemed not dangerous, they're given a notice to appear in court, and the border patrol agents even have to drive them to a bus station and watch these people get on buses for New Jersey or California," said Cathy Travis, a senior aide to veteran Texas congressman Henry Ortiz...

"It's the F'n Democraps who start to scream racism whenever the issue of securing our borders comes up."

And yet it was Bush who signed off on legislation that relaxed the Mexican border.

I don't know about 'deserving to lose the election', but if these a$$hat Chechens pull off an attack, there will be no Bill Clinton to blame for this - this will be 100% the fault of George W. Bush, who's had 3+ years to put measures into place to protect our borders from such violation and has grossly failed, given the numbers of illegals still streaming across.

"The world's a safer place without Mr. Saddam Hussein"? Not with Chechen terrorists freely crossing our borders!

No. It's the Islime terrorist who's the threat. Democrats suck, but last I checked, no Democrat has strapped explosives to himself and/or blown up any schoolkids.
