"In the case of Mexican immigrants, they could be a lot lower if they had a decent economy on their side of the border. Kind of like Bush and Fox are trying to do right now."

So your plan is to wait for the economy to improve for over 88 million Mexicans while doing nothing to strengthen the border. Unbelievable!

Nashville, Tennessee already has its Little Kurdistan and other Tennessee towns now have their Mexican enclaves. I for one would like to see some lower immigration figures before Mexico has a competitive economy.

Cutting the immigration numbers drastically is possible without building the Great Wall or .....even more difficult .....producing a Great Leap Forward in Mexican living standards.

Your hands off approach to the actual border is very unrealistic.

The man is not trying enough. The man does not see the border as a problem. Rove has convinced him that the GOP can get the "illegal vote" if they pander enough on this issue. That is a "pipe dream." Pretty soon, due to the numbers of illegal aliens entering the country and the vote fraud that comes with it, it will be very difficult for the GOP to win a presidential election.

We can do better. I'll do you one better than a 19th century solution. We need a medieval solution to this problem my friend.

I hope you are right, but I suspect that you are not.

The old rules and old logic no longer apply. My partisan loyalty is strong, but my loyalty to the safety of my fellow Americans is stronger. Bush is better than Kerry, but Bush is TOO soft yet to carry on a proper war on terror. Deep down, we all know this to be true. He will eventually be forced to get tough, after its too late I suspect.

Don't put words into my mouth. Its a poor debating tactic. My "plan" is certainly not to try to bankrupt my own country by undertaking the largest public works project in the history of the world. For doing so would by necessity take money away from those programs that DO work for reducing illegal immigration.

I for one would like to see some lower immigration figures before Mexico has a competitive economy.

Helping Mexico have a vigorous economy works on both ends - it helps ensure that those who are already there stay there and attracts those who are here back over there.

Cutting the immigration numbers drastically is possible without building the Great Wall or .....even more difficult .....producing a Great Leap Forward in Mexican living standards.

How?

Your hands off approach to the actual border is very unrealistic.

No, it is quite "hands on". It involves stimulating the economy in Mexico and making it a more attractive place for its own citizens to work and make money. In short, removing the motivation of its citizens to come here. And its a plan that is surely more feasible than just building humongous walls or land-mining the desert between our countries.

BS. This "article" is full of it and if you believe Bush "deserves" to lose even if a couple a dozen have infiltrated over the border then you are too.

There is virtually NO WAY these borders can be secured. No matter what your imagination says. This is a none issue only raised to attempt to destroy Bush.

There has NEVER been ONE terrorist act perpetrated by anyone coming over the Souther border. NOT ONE.

Now that is a fact not a flight of fantasy.

As for threats, I'm a heck of a lot more concerned about good old voter fraud perpetrated by good old American citizens like George Soros than any presupposed "wave" of fraudulent voters coming from Mexico. There are a lot more Democrat "voters" buried in the graveyards of our nation than there are illegals who are instructed to vote for the Democrat.

So true, reality is always so much more interesting, absurd, outrageous, good bad and amazing that anything even John LeCarre can dream up.

"...And its a plan that is surely more feasible than just building humongous walls or land-mining the desert between our countries..."

So you again parade this red herring of a Great Wall. The border can be tightened without a "wall" or a massive public works project.

Would you object to five thousand more border patrol operatives with updated equipment?

I think you'll find few people buy your arguments about your Chairman Mao-style Great Leap Forward for the Mexican economy. It is strange that you see the corruption in Ancient Rome but not in Mexico.

I think a good wake up call to the US would consist of running the second year series of the show " 24 " on all local TV channels. A realistic look at an anti terrorist unit trying to hunt down and stop terrorists from nuking LA.

That particular red herring has been stocked in this particular pond by countless others in this thread, not me. I'm trying to refute the idea of a Big Honkin' Wall when I see it, not support it.

True. What we disagree on is the details.

Would you object to five thousand more border patrol operatives with updated equipment?

Nope.

I think you'll find few people buy your arguments about your Chairman Mao-style Great Leap Forward for the Mexican economy.

People are entitled to their opinion.

It is strange that you see the corruption in Ancient Rome but not in Mexico.

There is corruption everywhere - Mexico is not unique in that. Using that logic, you must be opposed to the War in Iraq and Afghanistan because of the massive corruption in their leadership as well. Further, you must have been out there protesting Ronald Reagan in the 80s - the Communist countries were corrupt as well. But we managed to muddle through those instances.

Isn't interesting how you have turned this into a debate about Mexican illegal immigration, which I admit is a problem. But, what does improving the Mexican economy have to do with stopping terrorists from coming to this country? Sadly, if something were to happen, all of your arguments are moot and you know it. Why can't you focus on the terror threat? Also, why don't you tell me how the Mexicans handle their border with Guatemala? Is it open? Do you know? Did they address this issue on the talking points from which you are posting?

Furthermore, just because we can't stop all evil doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to stop all that we can. This is the kind of Kantian nonesense that has infected our churches and schools. Just because we can't apply something all of the time, doesn't mean we shouldn't try to exercise PRUDENCE and make things better than they were. You are better than that. Don't use liberal arguments.

Nice try. It's GWB who is standing watch. If any crap goes down it is 110% HIS fault for not taking the lack of border security more serious.

Ah but Mexican corruption is on a grander scale than USA corruption at least viewed on a per capita basis. Your Great Leap forward in the Mexican economy will be a loooonnng time coming.

At least asgardshill is on record with a willingness to support five thousand additional Border Patrol operatives. In a game of inches that could make the difference. Now American civilization is saved !! Thanks asgardshill !!

...regarding your post number 32. It's GWB who is the man in charge. Job number one is the security of the US. Just because he longs for a "warm fuzzy feel good" border does not meant it's the right thing to do for the security of our country.

To somebody who thinks this is a Law Enforcement issue? (Can you imagine some poor Border Patrol agents running into this bunch?)

No thanks. I have issues with Pres. Bush, but Kerry would offer these guys citizenship... after all, they are only doing the terrorism that Americans don't want to do...

I've "turned" nothing here. I've been responding to posts advocating the building of the Big Honkin' Wall, which I think is an abysmally bad idea.

As for terrorists, I'm for keeping them out and against the false security of some of the methods proposed in this thread. We have a new Department of Homeland Security whose members spend just about every waking moment trying to figure out how to accomplish the goal you mentioned.

So let's turn this around - if you have such a great solution to the problem of keeping terrorists out, why aren't you working for the DHS right now? Or, is it enough for you simply to pontificate and wring your hands about this problem on FreeRepublic? Crying and whining won't keep a single terrorist out of our country.

Sadly, if something were to happen, all of your arguments are moot and you know it.

What "arguments" are you talking about? Did you blame Bush for the hurricanes in Florida too?

Why can't you focus on the terror threat?

Because in some cases, I'm responding to others who already aren't.

Also, why don't you tell me how the Mexicans handle their border with Guatemala? Is it open? Do you know?

No. Do you?

Did they address this issue on the talking points from which you are posting?

What "talking points" are those?
