I wonder how they know this. If they knew who they were, how did they get in here?

Loaded rates for employees are approximately 2.5X the salary. So the loaded rate for these folks would be $57,505, or $182,709,486,400 annually.

This is beginning to sound like another "War on Drugs" kind of fiasco.

What does a Chechen look like? White, black, Arab,Asian, what?

Caucasian European. But most of the problem Chechen's are Arabic.

Exactly how can we know this but not be able to stop them?

Exactly how can we stop them? Israel has a border that is a computer sensor fence, and a strip of sand two car lenghts wide that is patroled 24/7 with Humvee mounted squads. The Arabs still smuggle over the border. There is not a fence that a smart man can make that a smart man cannot get over, or under or around.

I heard about this nifty invention. It;s called sonar.

Yes it is a very interesting invention, the best of them is side scan sonar, it is great for spotting small objects like a single man. It has a 400 yard range. Lets see, 10,000 miles of sea coast divided by 400 yards equals about 1500 times more boats than exist in the world.

Guess we better start buying boats...

Building a wall to stop unarmed individuals from entering the U.S. shouldn't be such a difficult task, especially with modern surveillance equipment.

It is a hell of a lot easier to detect an army or a tank. Israel has the most advanced surveillance equiptment on border fences in the world, bar none. They seem to have a bit of a problem keeping the borders closed and Israel is smaller than some California counties. Israel has 100% draft too.

While it is a good thought to close the borders, it is just that, a thought. It would take an army many times the size of what we now have to patrol our borders a fraction as well as Israel can. Do you want 100% draft?

I think Bush is very wise wiping out the fire ant nests instead of marching around the house stomping ants all day.

Controlling terrorism and illegal immigration is a matter of degree and quantity. If we can stop 99 percent of them, then we have succeeded. If we can stop 99 out of 100 nuclear backpacks, then the country can survive.

In answer to the question, "Exactly how can we know this but not be able to stop them? " here is part of the answer:

"Sheriff D'Wayne Jernigan, of Del Rio, Texas, last month publicly blasted the dubious policy after being ordered by the Homeland Security Department to release 17 captured Brazilians before they had been interrogated."

"Catch and release" is for environmentally conscious fishermen.

Compared to Israel, we have a lot more resources available per border mile. But the fence does seem to be working for Israel. The terrorists seem to be cutting back on the suicide bombings and working on missile attacks, which are more expensive for them and less effective. Israel is working on new systems to deal with the missiles.

If you want a rough estimate of what it would cost to control the borders, consider this: The border patrol says that they stop about 20% of crossing attempts. Find out what their budget is and multiply it by five to get 100%. The actual number will be less than that because as you lower the probability of success, fewer will even try.

While I do not believe that we can "seal" the border, it is clear we can do more. Catch and release is stupid, let the dope smokers out of jail and put the illegal immigrants in. Minimum sentance 3 months. As it is there is no cost to being caught, other than a free busride home.

Bus should stop at the local pokey, illegal what a concept. You and I agree on much.

Perhaps it would be cheaper than sonar on coast guard vessels to have an active SOUSUS line of stationary sonar devices around the coast.

It takes hi-frequency sonar to spot small objects. Sousus was a passive system. Hi freq stuff has short range but good definition.

I just think the best way to kill the dragon is a blow to the heart, it will sprout heads as fast as we can chop them. Even with a 99% catch rate, 1% can kill a city in the days of nukes. Proactive instead of reactive military force is a better option. IMHO

I'm sure that is how Independence was won in 1700's, and it would work...good idea, and a great backup if we were attacked.

Not since they erected the wall recenlty, it's been helping considerably. In any case, your point is a bad one, because many Palestinians live amongst the Jews already.

WE have sonar detection to detect subs. I don;t thunk that it requires a boat to have the sonar.

To me, the "we can;t do it" mantra is simply an excuse from folks who simply want to look the other way at illegal immigration. Or do you honestly believe that the nation that put a man on the moon, split the atom and developed the Internet cannot control its own borders?

Why you address this to me, I don;t know. Could you please post where I have said to "build a wall and minefield?"

I am firmly of the belief that our nation can effectively control its borders without a bloodbath.

No, it is simple mathematics exposing unrealistic expectations. You want a sonar that can spot a man in the water, you are going to have to go to hi freq, and if you want hi freq you are going to have to settle for less range. As a military sonar on a ship is so powerful that it will kill fish near the transducer, you are going to have to put up with a hell of a lot of dead fish if you make a sonar line from one end of the continent to the other.

Your expectations are simply unrealistic, and to say Bush is ignoring a clearly scientific impossiblility is not against him, it is for him.

Get real here, nobody is gonna make you safe in bed on the cheap. You want freedom, you will have to fight for it. Try living in Israel sometime. With 100% conscription, and the highest technology available to man, Islamokazi's get in once and a while. The longer you duck and cover, the greater chance you get to buy it. If you want to survive and be in peace and safety, WIN the WAR. Don't demand 'someone' do 'something' about it. Kerry will promise you the moon for power over you. Do you think he can deliver?

Hah! 10,000 miles of coast line, and 8,000 miles of border, how are you going to make that impassable?

Dang, with all the FBI in the US looking after that one guy in the woods for years, and they even knew the woods he was in? Multiply that guy by 1000, and divide the FBI by 1000 and add in 100,000 times the area.

Or do you honestly believe that the nation that put a man on the moon, split the atom and developed the Internet cannot control its own borders?

Do you at this point honestly think it can to your standards?

This from todays news here in Israel:

Six terrorists were killed last night and this morning, thwarting three attempted attacks against Israelis. In one incident, early this morning, two armed Palestinian terrorists infiltrated an orchard near Kibbutz Holit, south of the Gaza Strip - despite the presence of a protective fence around the entire Gaza area.

That is one of the most heavily patrolled borders in the world, with the highest tech computer sensor fence-line. Just building it 300 miles is costing Israel over a BILLION Dollars. Now imagine your taxes after trying to build a fence like this around the Continent of America, and a couple of low tech Arabs still defeated it. It is one thing to demand security, but quite another to meet your expectations because your demands are simply unrealistic.

Bush cannot deliver it, God perhaps, but we threw him out of Government... Which is of course, why we have this problem now isn't it?
