Why Republicans disgust me

Do you want to know why the Republican Party disgusts me?

Just take a look at the Pennsylvania Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by Arlen Specter.

Specter is a disgusting old political hack who doesn't deserve to be dogcatcher of Bucks County. Yet, he has served four terms in the Senate.

He claims to be a Republican, but he supports few positions in the Republican platform. He is pro-abortion. He is pro-homosexual. He is a big spender. He is a big-government liberal by any standard you want to use.

Finally, this year, someone within the party decided to challenge Specter – a young congressman named Pat Toomey.

Toomey, 42, didn't have much of an organization. He didn't have a lot of money. But he did have grass-roots support from conservatives – people who actually believe in Republican Party principles, not just politicians who call themselves Republicans.

But the party establishment rushed to Specter's defense. Not only did President Bush weigh in to support the 74-year-old Specter, who is on the wrong side of nearly every issue under the sun, but so did the usually reliable junior senator from Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum.

Despite the money advantages, the endorsements and the party establishment firmly behind him, Specter managed to squeak out a victory of less than 20,000 votes in a contest where more than 1 million were cast.

The Republican leadership's way of thinking about this race focuses on Specter being in line for the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee next year. But that should be reason for opposing him, not supporting him.

In 1987, Specter opposed President Reagan's appointment of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court. He betrayed his own Republican president and a very good jurist. Why the Republican establishment would remain loyal to this unprincipled liberal is beyond me.

Bush and Santorum's campaigning undoubtedly made the difference.

" I just wish someone had a chance besides Kerry and Bush.

If more people would get rid of their defeatist attitude toward other political parties such as the Constitution Party then these united States could get back on the correct track once again.

I keep hearing the same old BS from both republicans and democrats; "I'll just vote for the lesser of two evils".

Voting for the "lesser of two evils" is STILL voting for EVIL.

That's like saying who do I vote for Stalin or Hitler? Neither is acceptable.

Please stop wasting your vote on the "lesser of two evils" and vote Constitution Party and help get this country back on the road of liberty and away from that path of socialistic destruction.

"Well there is one very tiny payback for Bush, I am one vote that he had last time, that will not be present in Nov. Are there others? More than a few perhaps."

Interesting! It was the voters who gave the election to Spector, and it is the voters that are responsible. The people are the government and you want to payback "Bush".

I consider myself a libertarian. I couldn't vote for Russo. If Bush got anything right, it is the War on Terror being fought "over there" where ever "there" happens to be. Better there than here.

I didn't vote for Bush last time, having suffered a slight mental slip and voted for Browne, and he has proven (domesticly speaking) to be every INCH the RINO that I thought he would be. Seeing Brownes anti-war idiocy since 9-11, it's probably a good thing the LP is a 1% party.

Taking the fight to the bad guys who attacked us on 9-11 mitigates at least some of that. Add in the threat of Kerry, and I'll probably hold my nose and vote for Bush again.

That in no way should be an endorsement of his "out liberal the liberals" policy he seems to have in regards to "social" spending. Considering he won't have to worry about re-election in his second term, maybe the President can do the right thing and start taking his cues from the members of the RLC in his own party. That is what this country REALLY needs.

I also wouldn't call myself a Republican. Thats why if my guy lost and I hated Specter so much I would skip his name and still vote Bush and any other candidate I liked on the ballot.

Skip the Senate race and vote Bush and victory in the WOT.

I've got news for you . . . minor parties in this country are the wave of the future, even though they rarely run successfully in political races.

There's no getting around the fact that there are increasing number of elections in this country (including the last three presidential elections) in which the vote tallies for minor party candidates exceed the margin of victory between the two major candidates. If that's not an impact, then I don't know what is.

Normy...

Regardless of your indelicate language, there is some credit you may claim. Read this thread, add up the insulting remarks aimed at conservatives and then ponder if just maybe you have helped drive away previous Bush voters.

Two 6 year terms for Senators...And three 4 year terms for Congresscritters....ought to be enough.

NOBODY and I mean nobody should be in Washington over 12 years..!!

"Which kennedy and the nea are now moaning about."

Yes, just like the AARP and the Medicare bill. If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to want a glass of milk. That's why Bush was a moron for trying to appease them in the first place.

No matter how much money and party support Spector had, the bottom line is that the people voted for him. This is the real problem. People are either easily manipulated, uninformed or just plain stupid. Anyway, conservatism can only succeed if people are intelligent and well-informed.

People decry childhood behavior, yet if everyone does not agree with their viewpoint they go on the attack.

If the Libertarians had attached themselves to one of the major parties, they would wield as much political party as any other faction. As it is, both parties can ignore them.

But it seems Conservatives are being ignored as much as Libertarians even though they tried to attach themselves to the Republicans Party.

I've got news for you, the third party backers were saying that 12 years ago, when they put Clinton in office twice. All these FR posters who boast about principles and Conservatism and what not, didn't even have the courage to put a principled Conservative like Bob Dole in office in 1996, instead, went with some third party spoiler, and everyone ended up with Clinton.

Actually with the standards in the education bill, Kennedy's harping makes him look like a hypocrite.

You see it one way, I see it another.

We're already seeing the "Vote for who well tell you to, or else we'll label you an unappesable, right-wing, wackjob extremist!" crowd come to life.

How can you so readily know this with your being here only a day and a half?

That's how I see it. Specter caucuses with the Republicans - we must retain our committee chairmanships and continue to push on the judicial appointments etc.

GWB is a Republican - not a conservative. There will be no one on the ballot who can do a better job of protecting your children and grandchildren. And frankly, I am grateful for him.

We must destroy/discredit the liberals first before we can enjoy the luxury of having a two-wing or faction Republican party.
