Why Republicans disgust me

Do you want to know why the Republican Party disgusts me?
Just take a look at the Pennsylvania Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by Arlen Specter.
Specter is a disgusting old political hack who doesn't deserve to be dogcatcher of Bucks County. Yet, he has served four terms in the Senate.
He claims to be a Republican, but he supports few positions in the Republican platform. He is pro-abortion. He is pro-homosexual. He is a big spender. He is a big-government liberal by any standard you want to use.
Finally, this year, someone within the party decided to challenge Specter a young congressman named Pat Toomey.
Toomey, 42, didn't have much of an organization. He didn't have a lot of money. But he did have grass-roots support from conservatives people who actually believe in Republican Party principles, not just politicians who call themselves Republicans.
But the party establishment rushed to Specter's defense. Not only did President Bush weigh in to support the 74-year-old Specter, who is on the wrong side of nearly every issue under the sun, but so did the usually reliable junior senator from Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum.
Despite the money advantages, the endorsements and the party establishment firmly behind him, Specter managed to squeak out a victory of less than 20,000 votes in a contest where more than 1 million were cast.
The Republican leadership's way of thinking about this race focuses on Specter being in line for the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee next year. But that should be reason for opposing him, not supporting him.
In 1987, Specter opposed President Reagan's appointment of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court. He betrayed his own Republican president and a very good jurist. Why the Republican establishment would remain loyal to this unprincipled liberal is beyond me.

"because "principled Conservatives" went with Perot" I did not. Nor did most.
Good parroting of party propoganda. Now, go out to pasture and play.
Those words: "Principled", and "Conservative", really irritate you. What a surprise. You are definitely a modern Republican.
This is my party, and you socialist slavers are not welcome to it.

"The diversion from the realities of what just happened in PA is in full swing by the Conservative-hating RINO die-hards." I think some people will say, vote, do anything just to get a table scrap or two. Jeez, it was Specter, and it wasn't like Toomey was some salivating nut....

No, we decided to give the election to Jimmy Carter.
If, I remember my own "historical vibes," -- Reagan would have won the presidency in '76. There was an intense "anti-Washington" feeling after Watergate.
The repubs served up the same old stuff. (Out of loyalty, of course.) But then you can't deny Gerald's dynamic leadership ;)

"I believe that after 10 or so years of dem control things will be in shambles and the reps will have to listen to their base."
I find these remarks interesting. We have a nation divided into thirds. 1/3 liberal, out and out commies. 1/3 sit in the middle from varying degrees of left of center to right center. The final 1/3 are conservatives.
The left to the right, election after election, seek to pull from the middle of the road the most votes. Sometimes in order to win elections candidates present themselves as being in the middle of the road, because this bunch have minds and spines of mush, and need to be enticed to join one side or the other.
Now is not the time to surrender to the liberals and the left of center. As our own who willingly sign up and put their lives on the line and willingly give that ultimate sacrifice, this nations owes them for protecting our freedom.
Never forget what liberalville is after, that one thing that set this nation apart from all other nations of the world "Rights given to the individual by the CREATOR no man/government can take away".

That's how I see it. Specter caucuses with the Republicans - we must retain our committee chairmanships and continue to push on the judicial appointments etc. Do you see this as working with SPECTRE as the chairman of the Judiciary?
Shalom.

"Great Logic" For Gods sake!! If your intent on being a socialist, and enslaving us all, then be brave about.
A vote for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil. That you take pride in embracing evil slowly is sickening.

Just read this thread. Read the vulgar language and personal insults, all more likely seen on a democrat site.A little off-topic here, but wow----how true this is. I finally checked out DU and practically every post is mired in absolute gutter-language. The level of vitriol and hate is also way over the top. There's just something about leftists...

The liberal mindset knows no party affiliation or loyalty. Politics is a disgusting process made even more difficult by people like this. Statesmanship is what we need but what we get is some latter day cheap copy of a makeover! Don't dignify this louse by calling him a rino; call him what he is, a liberal to the core!

Alec Baldwin says if his guy doesn't win he will move to another country. I expect far more from a conservative whos candidate lost. I explained this to someone else yesterday and I'll explain it again to you today.
If SPECTRE had trashed Toomey, we'd lick our wounds and move on.
With as much name recognition and money as SPECTRE had, and even with GWB and Rick Santorum stumping for him, he won by only 2% of the vote. If Bush and Santorum had merely endorsed SPECTRE (as required) but not come out so strongly, we would be pitting Toomey against Hoeffel this November.
Imagine you are a Giants game and after watching 11 innings the giants loose by one run.
Imagine that, immediately before the game, Barry Bonds switched to the other team, and he was the one who hit the winning home run.
That's how we conservatives in PA feel, and we want to vent about it for a while.
If you keep asking me to explain my reasoning, it might just start to sound good to me and hold on until November. Better to just give me a sympathetic pat on the back and let it all blow over. It is now April. There is plenty of time to be logical between now and November. Right now, I just want to be pi$$ed.
Shalom.

Excellant response. I agree and I am not giving up. I am just disappionted with the direction the GOP has taken for the most part.
It is amazing how the 1/3 rule plays out in so many things.
Also how evenly the people are divided. The last election was a tie and I wonder how close things would have been in the two before that if Ross Perot had not been in the race.

I didn't either in 92. I stayed home, didn't campaign, didn't get out the vote. I'm not there again yet, but there are no guarantees because NOTHING is as it seems...

Maybe if we just got back to the original document and shed all of the amendments and modifications made after its initial ratification, we might be able to reclaim lost freedoms and former glories. Amazing! Just like that, I'm now a slave on a plantation.

You & people like you prevent me from becoming a member of the Republican Party. You would call me a RINO if I joined.Well, I won't. I'd be glad to have you.
These people just cannot face the fact that they have NO candidate and NO party; rather than going and forming their OWN party, they stay around and carp about ours.

Conservatives don't get into office because people don't vote for them. That is not the President's fault. That is the fault of conservatives who have not done the necessary grassroot work to get their candidates elected. The main reason that conservatives don't get voted into office is because of the hand-wringing, "He's conservative but he's not electable" mentality of most Republicans. When you don't vote for somebody because you don't think they can win, it's really a self-fulfilling prophecy isn't it?
