  • Did last night's US presidential debate Wi-Fi rip-off break the law? (Hofstra gouges reporters)

The host of the first presidential debate on Monday night, Hofstra University in New York, may have broken the law and could be in line for a huge fine. Reporters at the event were appalled to find that among the heavily marked-up items they were offered – $150 to rent a lamp, anyone? – was a $200 charge for a "secure wireless internet connection." Worse than the clear effort to price-gouge people trying to file stories, however, was the fact that the university decided that only its wireless access points were allowed to be used, and even sent someone around...

Well, there’s a new kid on the block in the unlikely form of wireless stalwart AT&T. The new plan, called Project AirGig, was announced in a press release on Tuesday and AT&T says it comes as the result of over 10 years of research and 100 patent applications for new technologies. AirGig is still highly experimental, but...

Nearly everyone has a wireless router. How about using it to bash Hillary or promote Trump. How to do it? If you have Guest Accounts name your Connect ID to 'Vote for Trump', 'Crooked Hillary', or anything for that matter that you want. Set your SSID so it Broadcasts. Use a very good password so nobody connects if you don't want them to. Viola...You are putting the message out anonymously for all your neighbors to see. I can't take credit for this invention but just passing it along. Here is the topper, if you can forward someone to a login...
  • Spying Wifi Router

    08/26/2016 2:24:10 AM PDT · by conserv8 · 21 replies
As people move through a space with a Wi-Fi signal, their bodies affect it, absorbing some waves and reflecting others in various directions. By analyzing the exact ways that a Wi-Fi signal is altered when a human moves through it, researchers can “see” what someone writes with their finger in the air, identify a particular person by the way that they walk, and even read a person’s lips with startling accuracy—in some cases even if a router isn’t in the same room as the person performing the actions.

I had my internet service upgraded today. The Frontier Communications tech was here to make some changes. After he was all set, while he was still here and his company truck still in my driveway, he asked my to connect to my network to see if all was well. I opened my iPad and as usual it listed a few local networks whose signal it was reading. It listed the usual few neighbors' networks that come up every time. It also listed: "NSA mobile surveillance unit 981" I've never seen this before, and since his truck left an hour ago,...

You should be able to trust your wireless keyboard. And yet security researchers have been warning people to be suspicious of wireless computer accessories using sketchy radio protocols for years. Those warnings peaked five months ago, when hackers at the security firm Bastille found that millions of cheap keyboard and mouse dongles let hackers inject keystrokes onto your machine from hundreds of yards away. Now, in case you missed that message, the same researchers have extended their attack to millions more devices—and this time, they can not only inject keystrokes, but also read yours, too. On Tuesday Bastille’s research team...

The Wi-Fi Alliance standards body has added new features to its 802.11ac specification that promise up to three times the speed of existing wi-fi devices and the potential to move data faster than wired, gigabit ethernet local area networks. Named Wi-Fi Certified ac, the new specification add-ons include multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) radio aerial technology. This allows more devices to connect to the wi-fi access point and send and receive simultaneously for better throughput and responsiveness, an important consideration in enterprise and events settings. Older wi-fi access points manage connections in a round-robin fashion, with only one device...

The iMessage vulnerability got a lot of attention, but another bug allows for remote execution over Wi-Fi, which is a much bigger threat. Apple released new versions of several operating system products earlier this week, fixing vulnerabilities in OS X El Capitan and iOS 9 among others. Because encryption and Apple are big news these days, the attention mostly went to an admittedly interesting flaw in Apple's encryption for iMessage, reported by a research team, led by well-known cryptographer Matthew Green. But the bug is not an easy one to exploit and doesn't even expose a lot. There are much...

Obamas bemoan White House wi-fi 46 minutes ago From the section US & Canada The Obamas have lamented patchy wi-fi coverage in the White House during a TV interview. There are a "lot of dead spots", President Obama revealed during a pre-Super Bowl interview on CBS. "It can be a little sketchy," added Michelle. The couple's daughters, Sasha and Malia, were "just irritated by it", she said. Mr Obama traditionally does an interview ahead of the biggest American Football game of the year. The president added he had been trying to improve the wi-fi "for the next group of folks".

Now I have to purchase a modem and Wi-Fi. I talked to the cable guy. I need Wi-Fi that will travel over 60feet and over three stories. Hello FReeper friends. For the first time in several years, I've got a few bucks to spare. I'd like to finally upgrade from my old CRT television to a flat-screen TV. I'm also investigating the various options for streaming video to the TV via WiFi. I'm looking at devices like Roku and Amazon's FireTV -- especially because Amazon is having a Black Friday deal on the FireTV stick. However, the TVs that I'm looking at all are WiFi enabled. So here's my question: unless I really, really want features specific to FireTV, do I really need it (or Roku) if...

On by default, feature automatically switches to cellular signal when Wi-Fi is weak If you've upgraded to iOS 9, you should be aware that it comes with a new feature – enabled by default – that could make your next wireless bill a lot bigger. Wi-Fi Assist automatically switches your phone from Wi-Fi to a cellular connection when the Wi-Fi signal is poor. That's helpful if you're in the middle of watching a video or some other task on the internet that you don't want interrupted by spotty Wi-Fi service. "But this also means eating through your 500 MB data...
  • Could a Freeper answer a question about bandwidth?

    09/23/2015 7:13:12 AM PDT · by LouAvul · 27 replies
I subscribe to Netflix and Amazon. My ISP is Cox and the Cox box is situated next to the tv. There's also a Samsung DVD/streaming movie box next to the tv. Netflix movies stream fine. The problem is with Amazon. I can watch older (picture Paul Newman in "The Hustler", B&W) movies but with newer movies I'm getting, "Insufficient bandwidth" message. However, on my computers I can stream those movies just fine. Why is there insufficient bandwidth on the tv streaming just for newer (HD) movies? And just on Amazon? Finally, how can this be fixed? thanks

Analysis America's broadband watchdog is suffering a backlash over plans to control software updates to Wi-Fi routers, smartphones, and even laptops. In a proposed update [PDF] to the regulator's rules over radiofrequency equipment, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) would oblige manufacturers to "specify which parties will be authorized to make software changes." In addition, it proposes that "modifications by third parties should not be permitted unless the third party receives its own certification." While the intent is to make the FCC's certification of the next generation of wireless equipment faster and more flexible, open source advocates were quick to notice...

I'm thinking of upgrading my cell phone. My car has Bluetooth but my phone can't even take pictures. So I see these phones with Bluetooth and along with that most say WiFi. I have one of Sprints original contracts at $15 a month. Of course there is no internet. texting or whatever. So when a phone says WiFi what does that mean? Does the phone have some type of browser that can access a free WiFi independent of the phones phone software? Pardon my ignorance and thanks. And I'm looking at used phones, new phones require me to drop my...

An Oklahoma woman pulled a knife on a group of teen boys after getting angry over the poor Wi-Fi connection at a Taco Bell, police said. Amber Lynn Henson was frustrated about the Tahlequah restaurant's internet speed on Thursday when she went to a drinking fountain to cool off. But a group of unwitting youngsters blocked the 48-year-old's way, reports the Tahlequah Daily Press. "The boys were kind of in the way of the drink fountain and she had to squeeze through them to get her drink," said Tahlequah Police chief Nate King. "She got agitated and spilled her drink...
