MESSAGE FROM CINDY-TRUE-SUPPORTER:"Yesterday I (Cindy_True_Supporter) and the mother of a wounded warrior that I met before the closing of Walter Reed- DC had the opportunity to have lunch with Cliff, the evening manager of the Mologne House at WRAMC. He conveyed to me how important our group was outside of Walter Reed with supportive signs of our wounded troops. He stressed that our presence was of tremendous importance in their recovery and in trying to deal with depression and self worth. Our appearance at the gate and on the corners in front of the hospital was something they could count...

Congressman Steve King and Senator Chuck Grassley met with senior leadership of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center yesterday to discuss a recent memo released by the Medical Center prohibiting the use and distribution of Bibles and other religious materials during visits to wounded soldiers. After receiving the memo on December 2nd, King called Vice Admiral John Mateczun, Commander of the Joint Task Force National Capital Region Medical, and Rear Admiral Alton Stocks, Commander of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, to Capitol Hill. King and Grassley were informed that the memo was worded improperly, that the Medical Center...

It’s an Obama world. While we were preoccupied with other disastrous Obama policies, military bureaucrats under Barack Obama passed a new rule that barred loved ones from bringing Bibles to wounded soldiers. The US Military says they are rescinding the order but only after a Republican lawmaker denounced the policy on the House floor. Todd Starnes reported: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center said they are rescinding a policy that prohibits family members of wounded military troops from bringing Bibles or any religious reading materials to their loved ones. The decision to rescind the ban on Bibles came exactly one...

  • Walter Reed’s Final Lowering of the Colors, Sept. 15,2011 - A sad day in America’s history

Quiet and serene, with a ghost town atmosphere. A far cry from the hustle and bustle of a month ago. All the wounded had been transferred to Ft. Belvoir or The new Walter Reed National Medical Center, Bethesda. The last 18 wounded warriors were moved on August 27,2011. Pictures and video by [Mrs] Trooprally At 11AM on this most perfect of a day, there was no one to be seen except a few people setting up for the lowering of the colors and a few trucks and cars packing up. Only sound one heard was the low hollow clanking of...

September 2, 2011 There's a lot of good sense behind closing two famous and nearby military hospitals and merging them into the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. But just looking at the name reveals both what's good about this merger and what makes it so tricky. Walter Reed was a famous Army doctor, and for more than a century his name was on the Army's iconic hospital in Washington, D.C. Now that hospital is shutting its doors, and Reed's name will go onto the new hospital built on the Navy's flagship medical campus in Bethesda, Md., 6 miles...

Shortly after 6 am Saturday morning, and less than 9 hours after our last Friday night at Walter Reed, the first members of the DC Chapter of Free Republic began to arrive at the gates where the ambulances would depart Walter Reed. Between Silver Spring, MD and Bethesda, Montgomery County, MD police cars were already at every intersection to ensure a non-stop passage for each ambulance to the newly named Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda. By 6:30 am, the banners and signs were ready for the first of 18 ambulances. A food court, courtesy of the Trooprally’s...

Photo by U.S. Army WASHINGTON (Army News Service, August 29, 2011) -- The last patient left Walter Reed Army Medical Center Saturday following 17 other wounded warriors who traveled by ambulance to the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md. "It has been five years of preparation, but for me it's only been three," said Col. Norvell V. Coots, Walter Reed Healthcare System commander. This was his third year in command of the hospital, the last two of which he and his staff finalized all the plans for the move to the hospitals at Fort Belvoir, Va., and the medical center...

We knew it was coming and planned for it. For six years and four months of consecutive Friday evenings, the DC Chapter of Free Republic, other groups and individuals successfully challenged Code Pink and their union pawns in front of Walter Reed. After several months, they were forced from the Walter Reed front gates to a location 50 yards down Georgia Ave. Since June 2005, many Americans have gathered on Friday nights to continue to keep the anti-military forces away and to show support to the wounded warriors and their families. Tonight, then, was different from all others. Walter...

A good evening to be at Walter Reed’s front gates. There were no ambulances tonight , nor were there dinner buses. But there were soldiers coming and going through the front gates all night. Cars passing gave us many honks with passengers waving. Not to be left out, three people on bicycles rode by ringing their bells! The weather looked threatening, dark clouds loomed and distant lightning was putting on an impressive show. Ponchos and raingear were donned. The DC Chapter was ready. Five minutes of rain and it was over. Nobody complained. Pizza, soda, and brownies (by Jessica)...

It is public knowledge that the final move of our Wounded Warriors from Walter Reed to Bethesda Naval Hospital and Ft. Belvour will be Sunday, August 28,2011. Best intel we have is that the ambulances will start transporting our Wounded Warriors out of the main at Georgia Avenue and Elder Street, NW, gate at 7AM. We do not know the exact end time. From some deduction it is expected to be around 1-2PM. THE DC CHAPTER OF FREEREPUBLIC WILL BE THERE, rain or shine or hurricane. All patriots are invited to help show our Wounded Warriors and their families that...

It’s 6:30 pm on Friday evening at Walter Reed. Flag Row is being set up and the banners are on three corners. The first FReepers are taking to the corners with signs and flags. As the first flag is posted , passing cars start honking and don’t stop until we have left for the evening. Tonight, as usual, we talked with wounded warriors, family members and staff who were walking into or out of Walter Reed. And the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) bus stopped for a rare third time allowing some of us to directly thank the wounded warriors...

Finally, a warm somewhat breezy Friday evening at the front gates of Walter Reed. A solid group of fourteen Freepers holding signs and flags in front of the banners received honks and waves from passing cars. You wouldn’t know that Walter Reed is closing three weeks from now. Three buses and several cars carried the wounded warriors and family to dinner and an evening of entertainment in near-by Maryland. Returning after 9pm, they were cheered into Walter Reed by our stalwart group. The Aleethia Foundation has done a wonderful job over the past seven years coordinating these Friday evening...

On a hot July Friday evening, temperature at 100 degrees, you might expect everyone has left for the beach. Not at the Walter Reed front gate! Tonight, over 41 Freepers, lurkers and visitors arrived to support the wounded warriors and their families on one of the few remaining Friday nights before the final transfer to Bethesda and Ft Belvoir. A number of Freepers returned to join us. They came from Florida, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Georgia. SeektheTruth brought a sign all the way from Florida thanking the DC Chapter of Free Republic for its 328 consecutive...

WASHINGTON – Maj. Walter Reed's sword was symbolically handed over to the Navy at a ceremony Wednesday marking the closure of the Army hospital bearing his name, where hundreds of thousands of the nation's war wounded have been treated for more than a century. The tone was somber at times, but mostly celebratory, as more than a thousand former and current staff members and patients — some of them wounded troops from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars in wheelchairs who have lost limbs —gathered under a white tent to say goodbye to the Army's flagship hospital. The Army band played,...
