  • Skipping Iowa actually nearly cost Reagan the election.

Ronald Reagan had nearly defeated incumbent President Gerald Ford, and had the Republican establishment had to vote heavily for Ford to outweigh the elected delegates in order to nominate Ford. Reagan adopted a strategy of avoiding the establishment events altogether, not just the Iowa debate. And he went on to lose Iowa. And he plummeted in the polls in Massacusetts and South Carolina. In New Hampshire, Reagan shifted tactics. He realized he needed to debate... and defeat... Bush. The Nashua Telegraph agreed to sponsor a debate between Bush and Reagan. Careful not to violate RNC rules, Reagan instead offered to...
  • [Vanity] Why would Trump bother to negotiate with Pelosi?

    01/26/2016 7:44:32 PM PST · by dangus · 83 replies
Trump has been boasting of late about how great his relationship with Nancy Pelosi is. Apparently, he still thinks she's "the best," as he wrote in his fawning love letter to her in 2007, when Pelosi took over the House and set about sabotaging the U.S. economy. Maybe some FReepers are (to my surprise) of the notion that if you have to have to negotiate with liberals, so be it. But why does Trump think he will have to? After all, the Republicans hold a solid majority of the House of Representatives, and there's no hint of a tide turning...

Trump just announced he is not doing the debate this week. Seems that along with not liking Megyn Kelly, Fox just issued some email that insulted him. Some message about Putin and him. He said he will likely not change his mind.

And I wonder, too, if it was brought up at last night's "Democratic town hall." Any word from any prominent Democrats, like Barack Obama, too, or Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi? How about Cecile Richards? Pelosi did say this: QUOTE: Pelosi told CNN's Jake Tapper in an interview that aired Sunday on "State of the Union" that she did not accept that the videos -- which have rocked the social conservative movement this summer -- were accurate. She said she was concerned by the undercover filming by the Center for Medical Progress, which produced the edited clips. "I think they...
  • [FLASHBACK] Cruz Tries to Claim the Middle Ground on Immigration [Post-Gang of Eight 2013]

When it comes to immigration reform, Senator Ted Cruz has made it abundantly clear what he opposes: giving citizenship to people who broke the law to come here. What has not been as evident is what he supports: legal status for millions of people here already, while making it easier for immigrants to come here through the front door. "I have said many times that I want to see common-sense immigration reform pass," he said. "I think most Americans want to see the problem fixed."

Late today a Texas grand jury found no case against PP for selling baby parts; they did indite the producers of the video for unlawfully viewing a government form. Megyn Kelly of Fox news was the source for me. Background is that pro life Gov.of Texas appointed the prosecutor, in the case, to find if an indictment of PP could be found AGAINST them for selling baby parts. Instead the Producers were indicted! This cannot happen by accident. Even if a grand jury would not find an intictment against PP, a separate action would have to be prosecuted by the...

Gary Bauer, one of America's leading pro-life and pro-family activists, endorsed Ted Cruz on Friday. In doing so, Bauer became one of many evangelical Christian leaders who have thrown their support behind the senator from Texas. Bauer explained: "Ted Cruz is a courageous conservative who has built a consistent record on the issues that matter most. He has fought for religious liberty at home and abroad. He believes all of our children should be welcomed into the world and protected by the law. Ted knows that government is too big and that taxes and regulations are too high. He will...
  • Why supporting Donald Trump is not a betrayal of "conservatism."

Today we learn from Jim Robinson of a movement afoot to proselytize among the so-called conservatives here to abandon Free Republic. This is but another effort by the supporters of Ted Cruz to squirm out of the Trump's closing in on the Republican nomination, and, perhaps the presidency. If the close is forestalled, and they SCREAM loudly enough in block capital letter that TRUMPIZOIDS ARE INSANE they will see Trump for what he is and the nomination will go to Cruz. They even project idiocies such as Trump's supporters would overlook it if he killed 500 puppies on TV with...

Many pro-lifers find themselves in a dilemma this election season. Whom to trust on the all important issue of the sanctity of human life? It is by now well known that Donald Trump--as a private citizen in 1999--identified himself as pro-choice. As a businessman, he obviously had given the issue little thought, and he evidently defaulted to the prevailing views held by other native New Yorkers on the subject. Ted Cruz, on the other hand, has given many speeches on the subject, maintaining that he is, and always has been, pro-life. But let's go a little deeper. Has Trump done...

See the video at the link for the thousands of supporters waiting in line today in Sioux Center Iowa in the cold and snow. Trump filled the facility with 1500 and had to use an overflow room with hundreds who couldn't get in to watch on Television. But they won't caucus! They'll stand in line for hours in the cold to see Trump but they won't caucus! For what it is worth, Cruz had 700 supporters at the same facility two weeks ago. This is Sioux Center northwest Iowa - evangelical religious country. Santourm cleaned up here in 2012 with...

What's the purpose of being pro baby/pro life of an innocent, unborn, precious life, if you have a list of loopholes that just perpetuate the culture of death. And, might I not add, having all the loopholes of rape, mother's health, incest, are simply proof that you're not pro life at all. This is directed squarely at Donald Trump who is a liar and deceiver. The people on Free Republic are either falling for or looking the other way when it comes to Donald lying about his position on abortion. Isn't life life? Why should you advocate killing a baby...
  • Which Presidential Candidate Do You Think Might Be An Answer to Prayers?

    01/22/2016 9:12:06 PM PST · by dangus · 48 replies
King John of Austria was no saint. Many historians believe he had an illegitimate son. But when the Ottoman empire threatened to destroy Western Civilization, John provided the answer to the fervent prayers of millions of Christians. Muslims had conquered most of Christendom: all of the Middle East, the Near East, North Africa, and much of Eastern and Mediterranean Europe. They amassed a giant navy, seeking to finally attack Rome. But they utterly failed. Before the battle, King John of Austria led his outmanned troops in prayer, entrusting their fates to the mercy of Christ. The result was one of...

Hillary says: "...nothing that this says changes the fact that I never sent or received material marked classified." So I looked it up. There is no Classified level in the US government system! The levels are Unclassified, Confidential, Secret, and Top Secret. So she never did send or receive material marked classified, because there is no such thing. And that makes her statement literally true, but misleading in the vilest possible manner.
  • How exactly will Cruz get anything done when everyone in Congress hates him? [vanity]

    01/21/2016 10:03:02 PM PST · by springwater13 · 136 replies
It's a serious question. What's he going to do when Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell tell him to go to hell? Is he going to tell them they are liars on television and then call into Mark Levin's show and whine? Being President doesn't work like that. Is he going to be like President Obama and try to use executive orders to ram his legislation through? Compare that to Trump's approach from Art of the Deal where he asks for 3x more than what he wants, completely disorients his competitors and shakes the ground beneath everyone, and then gets what...

Republican candidates have accused Donald Trump of being a closet liberal,  a Hillary plant,  someone with New York values,  donating to left-wing causes and left-wing politicians.  They say he isn't conservative enough to be President, and many have accused him of being a Democrat.  His political past makes him damaged goods and unacceptable to "Principled Conservatives" like Ted Cruz and his supporters.  Seventeen years before becoming a Republican presidential candidate, Ronald Reagan began his political career as a Democrat. He joined numerous left-wing political committees and fought against Republican-sponsored right-to-work legislation. He was elected president of a large, famous union...
