Jacques: For those who have just discovered the world of “big data” because of the exploits of super-computers winning at chess or GO against the best human champions, the technology seems almost magical: dump unstructured threads of information into a large binary warehouse and let “deep thinking” extract the salient patterns. This technology actually works when the data itself is well-behaved, in particular for consumer trends, industrial maintenance or medical research. When the subject area lacks an ontology, as in the case of unexplained aerial phenomena, the same techniques are problematic because the software is most likely to extract spurious...

Where's the birth certificate? In bizarre ‘birther’ twist, claims Trump is Pakistani Report says president-elect was born as Dawood Ibrahim Khan in Waziristan before being adopted by American family By Times of Israel staff November 13, 2016, After years leading the false charge that President Barack Obama was born outside of the United States, President-elect Donald Trump is facing his own minor “birtherism” moment, with a Pakistani television network claiming the New Yorker was born in Pakistan. “Believe it or not, presidential candidate Donald Trump was born in Pakistan and not in America,” the Urdu-language Neo News reported last month...

Scientists scanning the night sky in the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence are turning their telescopes towards a mysterious star, which had been flagged as an ‘alien megastructure’. As part of a $100 million (£81 million) project, backed by Stephen Hawking, astronomers will target the strange stellar object which has baffled scientists since its discovery. Called Tabby’s Star, its regular cycles of dimming have been claimed by some to be a sign of intelligent beings – warranting enough interest for a closer look.

A piece aluminium that looks as if it was handmade is being hailed as 250,000-year-old proof that aliens once visited Earth. The discovery of the mysterious chunk of metal in communist Romania in 1973 was not made public at the time, according to CEN. Testing has since revealed that the object is made of 12 metals and is 90 per cent aluminium with Romanian officials dating it as being 250,000 years old. The initial results were later confirmed by a lab in Lausanne, Switzerland, CEN reports.

A conspiracy theorist texted his mum to say 'If anything happens to me, investigate' just days before his mysterious death. Max Spiers, 39, a father to two boys, was found dead on a sofa in Poland, where he had gone to give a talk about conspiracy theories and UFOs. He was ruled to have died from natural causes despite no post-mortem examination being carried out on his body. But his dark investigations into UFOs and government cover-ups may have made him enemies who wanted him dead, says mother Vanessa Bates, 63. More recently, he was said to be probing into...

Listen up, NASA. Stephen Hawking has said it before and he’ll say it again: If extraterrestrials call, do not answer ― at least, not without careful consideration. Well, we’re convinced. NASA, we really hope you’re listening.

At a meeting Wednesday night, residents of Saint-Denis-de-Cabanne reacted angrily to news that migrants are to be housed in a waterfront castle that serves the French town as a holiday centre. The meeting followed a leaked document which revealed that, with the so-called “jungle” camp at Calais due to be demolished, the French government is planning to disperse migrants across the country. Between 50 and 100 migrants, none of them families, are due to arrive in the town of less than 1,300 people in November. Residents of Saint-Denis-de-Cabanne, near Roanne in the Loire, were informed of the arrangements via a...

An Iranian Grand Ayatollah recently said that the Mahdi – the Shi’ite version of the messiah – will arrive in a “super-modern vessel like a spaceship” and that until that time there will be no “peace, security, or decency” on earth. Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi was answering questions about the arrival of the Mahdi, otherwise known as the Hidden Imam, who according to Islamic eschatology will conquer the world before the Day of Judgment, ridding it of evil. Shirazi’s explanations, translated and published Friday by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), were based on Islamic teachings and hadiths, as...
