It's a no-go for The Duke. A California lawmaker's bid to commemorate May 26, 2016, as "John Wayne Day" failed in the Assembly after lawmakers cited the actor's comments on race. In a 1971 interview with Playboy, Wayne called black people "irresponsible" and said Native Americans were "selfish" for not wanting to share their land with white colonists. "He had disturbing views toward race," said Assemblyman Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville), according to the Associated Press.

Core Media Group, the company behind "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance," has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New York. According to court papers, the company says it owes $398 million. That includes money owed for loans, back payments to former employees, and investors, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "American Idol" was the company's biggest breadwinner. And now that the show has ended at Fox, the company is unable to find a similar source of revenue. The company has been seeing losses from a decline in "American Idol" ratings for several years now, however. In 2014,...

The network has handed out early series orders to two of its most high-profile pilots this season, both hailing from its sibling studio 20th Century Fox TV: 24: Legacy and Lee Daniels' Star. Legacy, which now counts former 24 star Kiefer Sutherland as an executive producer, is picked up for 12 episodes, while Star has scored the traditional 13. 24: Legacy is a new take on the franchise that features an all-new cast of characters and is structured in the same style of the original series. Legacy revolves around a military hero's (Corey Hawkins, Straight Outta Compton, The Walking Dead)...

Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa has opened a Snoopy Museum in Tokyo. The new outpost will exhibit portions of the California collection on a rotating basis every six months. The opening exhibit is "My Favorite Peanuts," curated by Schulz's widow Jean. Boing Boing noted that fans can purchase exclusive merchandise as well as grab a bite in the Cafe Blanket restaurant or the confectionery. Snoopy's creator, Charles M. Schulz, started the wildly popular "Peanuts" series while living in Minneapolis. He relocated to Sebastopol in 1958, then Santa Rosa in 1969, where he lived until his...

Madeleine Sherwood performed Tennessee Williams dramas on stage and screen, and worked with legendary film director Elia Kazan. Her Broadway roles included The Crucible, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Camelot — roles that any actor would envy. However, the Quebec native is perhaps best known for running a convent of nuns in Puerto Rico on television. For three seasons, Sherwood portrayed Reverend Mother Superior Placido on The Flying Nun, the charming, quirky 1960s sitcom that sent Sally Field soaring to a new level of stardom. As reported in The Hollywood Reporter, Sherwood has died at the age of...

There’s been a virus outbreak. The population at large has been infected and a large part of it now roams aimlessly searching for its next meal — of human brains. You know the drill, you’ve watched enough episodes of ‘The Walking Dead’ so you should be fine, right? Wrong. According to the experts at Psychology Today, it won’t be the toughest or bravest who will survive a zombie apocalypse. The ones who will thrive are vegans. Here’s why vegans will survive a zombie apocalypse and meat eaters won’t: 1. The hunting problem In a world full of zombies, there are...

Cancelled DishTV today. I have "cut the cord" on and off for many years, and it's time again. I was paying $60/month on a discount plan and it went up to $120 for the same programming. I'm just not getting that kind of benefit from the cable channels. On a personal level, I don't see the value. A recent article found that more than 1,000,000 [US] consumers cancelled paid TV subscriptions in 2015, according to SNL Kagan, a division of S&P Global Market Intelligence. Last year's decline was four times greater than the losses of 2014, and it represents the...

  • The Magnificent Seven trailer: Denzel Washington & Chris Pratt ride into town

Forget righteousness. The new trailer for Antoine Fuqua’s starry, bullet-holed remake of The Magnificent Seven arrived early Wednesday morning, ready to serve up a helping of revenge. Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeier star in the film as the title seven avengers, with Peter Sarsgaard playing the villainous outlaw they’re out to kill (before he kills them first). As the trailer sets up, Washington’s Sam Chisolm is asked by a young woman (Haley Bennett, who also stars in this fall’s The Girl on a Train) if he’ll provide retribution to the...

Men and women are different. They have different reproductive parts. Different hormones. Therefore they've tended to use different bathrooms. Different locker rooms. Because, well... they're different! But what about those gender-confused individuals who aren't quite sure if they're a Tommy or a Tammy? What happens to them? Fortunately we found one brave Bill, who would journey to the capitol to become Jill. Thank you, Schoolhouse Rock! VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcUJgbWrM64

With these words, John Peterman—iconic businessman, world traveler and bon vivant—told John O’Hurley, the actor who played him on Seinfeld, that he wanted to turn the “urban sombrero” into a real product. This week, he launched a 40-day Kickstarter campaign to do just that. Indeed, while most every true Seinfeld fan knows the episode with the urban sombrero, not all are aware that the character of Peterman, Elaine’s boss, was inspired by a real person with a real clothing catalog. But his story is worth telling. Yes, J. Peterman is a real person with a real company. “After 20 years,...

“This skit was outright sacrilege. They know if they did this to Muslims they’d have to be put into the witness protection program,” the singer-actor said. Pat Boone is calling out NBC and Saturday Night Live for allegedly being anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, cowardly, “diabolical” and even demonic for a skit over the weekend that parodied God’s Not Dead 2, the actor-singer’s latest movie. In God’s Not Dead 2, Melissa Joan Hart plays a public school teacher who is persecuted for answering a student’s question about Jesus. In the SNL skit, a trailer for a movie called God is a Boob Man...

Admittedly, they don’t seem to be having a lot of trouble finding out what love is, but the futuristic dystopian society they live in where all emotion is supposed to have been eradicated probably doesn’t approve. We’ve already seen a brief glimpse of Drake Doremus’ creepy scifi romance movie, but this fresh new trailer gives us a lot more insight into the horrifying world Nia (Stewart) and Silas (Hoult) live in, where people who feel anything get taken away and pumped with drugs to genetically alter themselves back into calm, emotionless citizens.

Some of us are old enough to remember the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court confirmation battle. We were shocked when reports first surfaced that Thomas, a well-regarded former chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, was being accused of sexual harassment. But then we heard his accuser’s ever-changing and uncorroborated testimony, and we compared it with the testimony of a dozen close female colleagues who effusively praised Thomas as a boss known for how well he treated the women around him. We learned that his accuser Anita Hill’s testimony was contradicted by data and evidence. Thomas won his confirmation battle....
