  • ‘Unsafe and Just Plain Dirty’: Women Accuse Vice of ‘Toxic’ Sexual-Harassment Culture

    Daily Beast ^ | November 15, 2017 | Brandy Zadronzy
In the summer of 2015, Phoebe Barghouty was 23 years old and had a new master’s degree in journalism from Stanford—but little other experience—when she landed what most of her peers would consider a dream job: associate producer at Vice’s Los Angeles bureau. Though her job hadn’t technically started yet, her boss, then-Editor in Chief Jason Mojica, invited her to join the team at the L.A. Press Club Awards. After accepting an award for public service in journalism, the team from Vice—including Mojica and Kaj Larsen, the bureau chief who had hired Barghouty—celebrated with drinks. By the end of the...

It’s hard not to feel a little bad for the DC Comics films at this point. They have the unenviable task having to form an identity in the shadows of the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which are usually good and rarely unwatchable, and the continued glow of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, which are seeming more and more like transcendent anomalies as we get deeper into this never-ending cycle of super humans crowding our multiplexes. DC got off to a rocky start and then Patty Jenkins went and made a very good “Wonder Woman.”

Embattled actor George Takei has apologized for a recent interview with Howard Stern in which he joked about sexually assaulting men, after the former Star Trek star was accused last week of groping a male model in an alleged incident in 1981. In a social media post, Takei said he attempted to play the role of a “naughty gay grandpa” whilst appearing on the radio show, adding that it was a “caricature that I now regret.” “Many have raised concern over a back-and-forth between Howard Stern and myself, where we joked about me touching men during my ‘Star Trek’ days...

Sex and the City can still be saved — if Sia Furler has her way. Amid rumors that series star Kim Cattrall refused to sign on for a third movie for the HBO franchise, the Austrian singer-songwriter has expressed her displeasure over the scrapped Sex and the City 3 and is ready to take matters into her own hands. In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple One radio, Sia even offered to take Cattrall’s place in Sex and the City 3. “‘I was like, I’ll play Sam, like nobody cares!” Sia said. “Like they just want the movie. We...

Over the weekend, a Page Six story spread across social media stating that "Wonder Woman" star Gal Gadot had refused to sign up for the sequel if director-producer Brett Ratner was involved. Ratner, whose production company RatPac-Dune Entertainment helped finance "Wonder Woman" and other major titles for Warner Bros., is one of the major Hollywood players to be accused of sexual assault and harassment in the "Weinstein ripple effect." Many in Hollywood praised the news of Gadot's ultimatum. It sounded like Gadot was using the leverage she gained by being the face of one of Hollywood's biggest hit movies of the year to help...

Over in one corner sat Alice, a strong-minded 27-year-old who always said what she thought, regardless of how much it might hurt someone else. In the other corner was Sarah, a thirtysomething high-flier who would stand up for herself momentarily - then burst into tears and run for the ladies. Their simmering fight lasted hours, egged on by spectators taking sides and fuelling the anger. Sometimes other girls would join in, either heckling aggressively or huddling defensively in the toilets. It might sound like a scene from a tawdry reality show such as Big Brother, but the truth is a...

George Takei had an out-of-this-world explanation for why so many people were talking about the sexual assault claim against him. In a now-deleted tweet, the “Star Trek” actor blamed Russian bots for spreading the story after Scott Brunton, an ex-model and actor, accused Takei of groping him in his Los Angeles condo in 1981. The tweet, credited to SecuringDemocracy.org, showed Russian bot activity over the last 48 hours. “Takei” had increased in popularity almost 20,000% and “George Takei” had jumped by more than 15,000%. It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas Ev'rywhere you go... And that's true. It is. On Stuart Varney's show on Friday I even sang the title phrase, somewhat gloatingly, in reference to this (Theresa May has now set the date for the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union, and it looks like I'll be winning by hundred bucks with time to spare). That would be reason enough to celebrate Meredith Willson, the great son of Iowa who wrote "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas". But this Christmas marks another landmark event in Willson's life: the 60th...

In his final broadcast of the season, John Oliver left his audience a going-away present in the form ads targeting President Trump. The Last Week Tonight host cited a New York Times article claiming that Fox & Friends is the “most powerful TV show in America” simply because the president tunes in to that program on a daily basis. And after the hosts boasted about their new title on their show, Trump tweeted about it 45 minutes later. “Information goes right from that show into his brain,” Oliver said. Oliver insisted that if Trump is going to keep watching that...
