The six aircraft sent to Syria are fitted with surveillance technology and had been touted as being capable of taking high-resolution photos and infrared images, even at night and in bad weather.

Only 29 of Germany's 66 Tornado jets are airworthy, a defence ministry report has revealed. It comes two days before German MPs are expected to vote in favour of military action against Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria. Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen has stressed that only six of the operational Tornado jets would be needed for the proposed mission. A vote on the UK's involvement takes place in parliament on Wednesday. Germany decided to join the fight against IS after an appeal by French President Francois Hollande in the wake of the 13 November Paris attacks. But the...

What’s the difference between keeping President Obama “updated throughout the night” on a deadly terrorist attack in Benghazi and keeping him “updated throughout the night” on a deadly tornado in Oklahoma? The president could have actually done something about Benghazi. Have you been watching the president the past 36 hours or so? Lots of photos of him calling officials in Oklahoma, offering federal help. Speeches in front of the camera expressing his condolences to the tornado victims and pledging to rebuild. “Our prayers are with the people of Oklahoma today,” Obama said yesterday, “and we’ll back up those prayers with...

The RAF Tornado mission in Iraq, which was supposed to be disbanded last March, will be extended until "at least" March 2017. Why has this veteran Cold War combat jet proved so enduring? The cockpit of a supersonic Tornado attack bomber is a much more peaceful place than you might expect. "It's incredibly quiet," says Jas Hawker, a former RAF wing commander who flew the aircraft over Iraq and Kosovo. "The pilot and the navigator could drop their oxygen masks and talk to each other. It's not silent but it's a lot quieter than people think." It also has a...

In the wake of a deadly tornado that destroyed parts of Van, Texas, a week ago, a dog was found curled up with her dead owner David Tapley, a retired police officer, and nearby his wife, Brenda. The Great Pyrenees, thought to be about 8 years old (solid information about her previous life, including her name, is hard to come by), is banged up, emotionally and physically. She's showing signs of shock; her skin is raw and bruised. She has some head trauma, and is now deaf in one ear from a burst eardrum. But, rather miraculously, she's alive. She...
