Rover and out: Stray dog takes out RAF jet as it landed at 200 miles per hour

AN RAF warplane targeting IS was badly damaged after hitting a stray dog as it landed at 200mph.

The £9.4million Tornado GR4 was returning to a base in Cyprus after a night sortie.

Its fearful pilot and navigator even considered ejecting from the jet — still carrying a payload of Brimstone and Paveway missiles.

But a relieved source said: “No one was hurt, just shaken up.”

Tuesday’s scare at RAF Akrotiri saw fire crews race on to the runway, as a refuelling tanker that had accompanied it was forced to circle for half an hour.

Damage to the undercarriage was said to run into “hundreds of thousands”.

The source added: “The crew were in danger to the point they considered ejecting on the runway.”

But last night the fighter bomber — one of ten Typhoon GR4s at the base — was ready for action again after urgent repairs.

It follows fury at the base being plagued by strays as the ancient perimeter fence rusts.

The source said: “Packs of strays roam the base for food. There’s no money to do anything about them, apparently.

“Everyone is s****ing themselves about a major incident.”

The RAF confirmed: “An RAF Tornado GR4 hit a feral dog. The aircraft has returned to service.”

Well, I can think of a cheap solution. But I wouldn’t have the heart to do it myself.

Yeah, it would be tough. But it might save the life of a pilot. We’ll watch movies as a family - my kids can watch people get killed in the action movies, but will cry if a dog dies in one. I’m not QUITE that bad, but....

still carrying a payload of Brimstone and Paveway missiles.

Couldn't get the lawyers to sign off on the targets, eh?

Or maybe there was little to hit. It’s not like there are plenty of targets in Iraq/Syria to waste an expensive missile on.

Spielberg is notorious for killing dogs in his movies. The black lab in jaws got eaten and a nice dog in lost world Jurassic park.

I too can watch “bad guys” die in droves in movies but not dogs. I am just the opposite in real life.....except when cops shoot dogs because they’re an inconvenience

still carrying a payload of Brimstone and Paveway missiles

that is the key line in the story. Why was it still carrying what it was supposed to send to ISIS?

We did it in Iraq. Every time we moved, if we were static for more that about 24 hrs the packs of dogs showed up. And there were a lot of them. They were hungry and mean, and a danger so they had to go. It was surprising how long they would hang around after the shooting started, hit one and the rest would just run off 50 feet and stop. But there was always another bunch to fill the void.

I can shoot feral animals. Be they cats, dogs, pigs...And so could military men shoot feral animals. These are not someone’s pets.

Perhaps. I think it would effectively immediately halt a riot and the looting.
