MILWAUKEE — In her Wisconsin debut as a Donald Trump surrogate, Sarah Palin was met with tepid applause and stone-faced silence Friday night at a Milwaukee County Republican gathering. In contrast, the 750 Republicans at American Serb Hall cheered enthusiastically for Sen. Ted Cruz, who was introduced by Gov. Scott Walker and talk radio host Vicki McKenna. The contrasting receptions illustrated why the Texas senator has surged past the real estate mogul and reality TV celebrity in the latest polls, especially in southeastern Wisconsin. Palin opened with a call for unity among the candidates in supporting former Green Bay Packer...

MADISON, Wis. - Former Gov. Tommy Thompson will be leading Ohio Gov. John Kasich's efforts in Wisconsin. Kasich's campaign announced Thompson's leadership role on Monday. Thompson announced his backing of Kasich last week. Thompson says in a statement that Kasich is "the dedicated, responsible and compassionate executive leader our country needs." Kasich faces a critical primary on Tuesday in his home state of Ohio. Wisconsin's primary is three weeks later on April 5.

DES MOINES — Gov. Terry Branstad says he would support a statewide Republican fundraising event in Ames next summer where GOP presidential hopefuls are invited to speak as long as no vote is taken as had been the practice during past straw polls that have been the focus of controversy. Branstad added that he did not want to see Iowa face possible sanctions that could cost delegates to the 2016 Republican national convention for conducting a poll in advance of the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses that could run afoul of new party rules. “I’m willing to agree to a statewide meeting...

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel — Wisconsin’s largest and most influential news organization — won’t be endorsing in the very tight presidential and Senate races this year. (Oct. 17 headline: “Marquette Law School Poll finds presidential and Senate races tied in Wisconsin.”) I asked editorial page editor David Haynes about this and he replied in an email: “I’m writing a column on our decision for the Sunday paper. We may post that early (Friday). As a point of history: The JS did not endorse in the 2000 presidential election, and I remember [editor] Marty Kaiser writing at the time that it...

Former Governor Tommy Thompson and Democratic Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin are in a near tie in Wisconsin’s down-to-the-wire U.S. Senate race.

Republican Senate candidate Tommy Thompson is now calling on Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin to drop out of the race. Thompson on Monday initially condemned comments Akin made in an interview over the weekend that women's bodies are able to prevent pregnancies in cases of what he called "a legitimate rape." But Thompson said whether Akin gets out of the race should be left to him and voters in Missouri. As pressure grows on Akin to get out of the race, Thompson on Tuesday says his apologizing is not enough and Akin should step aside immediately. Wisconsin Republican Sen....

Former Gov. Tommy Thompson took a major step in his political comeback Tuesday, winning a four-way Republican primary for an open U.S. Senate seat and setting up a sure-to-be nationally showcased November battle with Democrat Tammy Baldwin. The Thompson-Baldwin contest will feature two candidates who are ideological opposites. On top of that, if the 50-year-old Baldwin prevails she would become the first openly gay member of the Senate.

Thompson, 70, is the biggest Republican name in the race to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl. If this election were taking place a decade ago, he would likely win the primary going away. But the new GOP is a party of strong partisans, where dealmakers like Thompson are no longer in vogue. So, if he is going to win over a new generation of Republican voters, Thompson will have to shake his image as a big-government Republican and Washington insider. "Is Tommy nimble enough to pivot to the right and position himself as a staunch conservative?" said Charles Franklin,...

Sometimes it's hard to figure out who the real Tommy Thompson is. There's the Thompson who chided state employee unions this month for complaining about Gov. Scott Walker's proposals to increase the amount workers pay for pensions and health care. "He says to the unions and the bosses, 'We're going to ask you to help.' Oh, isn't that tough? Awwww," Thompson said sarcastically at the Walker rally on Jan. 21. "We're going to say we would like you to pay 5% of your retirement. Now you tell me what's wrong with that. And you tell me, is that a crime?"...

(Reuters) - Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson said Monday he planned to join the increasingly crowded race for the Wisconsin senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Herb Kohl.

MADISON, Wis. — Former two-term Republican congressman Mark Neumann announced Monday that he will run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Wisconsin Democrat Herb Kohl. Mr. Neumann is the first to officially announce his candidacy in the 2012 race, but several other prominent Republicans and Democrats are expected to announce soon. One of them, former Gov. Tommy Thompson, a Republican, released a statement welcoming Mr. Neumann into the race and urging him to focus his campaign on the policies of President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat. “Republican voters deserve a primary campaign based...

One week after the last of the nine recall elections in Wisconsin were held and Republicans clung to their majority in the state senate, there are strong signs Republican strength in the Badger State is on the rise. Not only has the long-planned Democratic attempt to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker run out of steam, but the odds have risen dramatically on a Republican pickup of the seat of retiring Democratic U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl in 2012. After more than $40 million spent by both sides in the nationally watched recall contests long considered the “dress rehearsal” for a January...

Democrat Russ Feingold leads Republican Tommy Thompson in a hypothetical U.S. Senate matchup in a new Wisconsin survey by Public Policy Polling. You can find the firm’s analysis here, with matchups of other potential candidates on both sides. Feingold and Thompson are easily the best-known of all the political figures in the survey. Wisconsin will have an open Senate seat next year, due to Democrat Herb Kohl’s planned retirement. In the statewide poll of 1,636 voters taken May 19-22, Feingold leads former Gov. Thompson 52% to 42%. Feingold leads other Republicans (Mark Neumann, J.B. Van Hollen and Jeff Fitzgerald) by...

Just a few years ago, Tommy Thompson was a well-regarded former governor of Wisconsin. Now it looks like recent attacks on Thompson for his alleged support of Obamacare, by the Club for Growth and others, are starting to take a toll. Thompson, who's contemplating running for Senate in Wisconsin to replace the retiring Herb Kohl, only got 20 percent of the vote and lost the straw poll for Senate nominees at the state's annual GOP convention today. Here are the totals: Ted Kanavas - 73 Tommy Thompson - 61 J.B. Van Hollen - 40 Mark Neumann - 33 Tim Michels...

From Mike Allen’s morning newsletter today: Tommy Thompson, the Republican former Wisconsin governor and George W. Bush’s first HHS secretary, has told friends he plans to run for the open Senate seat in Wisconsin. Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) said Friday that he won’t seek a fifth term in 2012. Thompson’s announcement gives Republicans a popular former two-term governor of state to seriously challenge for this toss-up seat. There’s no chance Thompson would run against Paul Ryan, so the former Wisconsin Governor will await the Budget Chairman’s official announcement on the race before jumping in. Ryan has suggested in private conversations...
