The Met Office last night extended a severe weather warning, amid fears of hurricane-force winds of up to 100mph. Forecaster Dan Williams said a “very serious situation” could trigger widespread destruction tomorrow going into Monday. He urged against nonessential travel, saying: “We are looking at a very severe storm to hit the UK.” The Government forecasters have not ruled out issuing a very rare red “take action” warning – reserved for the worst maximum severity storms – today or tomorrow.

Heidi Mayer Kruse has lived in Fargo, N.D. and eastern South Dakota, but she says she has never experienced a storm such as the one that buried their Blucksberg-addition home Friday. "It's chest deep consistently over our driveway," she said. Kruse and her family were without power most of Friday and into Saturday. "It was 39 degrees in our living room before power came back on this morning," Kruse said Saturday... Kruse, like many of her neighbors in the subdivision south of Sturgis, is amazed at the ferocity of the storm. "Having lived in areas that experience rough winters, I...

On the surface, the House GOP was in pep-rally mode as they headed into one of their most serious conflicts with President Obama since Republicans took the House in 2010. Lawmakers have been bragging about the unity behind closed doors since Speaker John Boehner embraced the strategy of trying to defund Obamacare through the government-funding bill. And at a rally after the vote, dozens of lawmakers cheered lustily as Majority Leader Eric Cantor delivered a remarkably political speech that specifically targeted a series of vulnerable Senate Democrats up for reelection. Underneath the surface, the same fault lines are still there...

People protesting George Zimmerman's acquittal marched along Crenshaw Boulevard on Monday night, stomping on cars, chasing bystanders and storming a Wal-Mart. Several protesters made their way into the Wal-Mart as guards scrambled to close security gates. A short while later, Los Angeles Police Department officers wearing helmets and carrying batons swarmed the store as others marched through the parking lot. The LAPD declared a tactical alert about 9 p.m., which means that off-duty officers can be held on duty when their shifts end and may respond only to high-priority calls. The LAPD arrested at least one person but vowed to...

Screen grab.Noted hedge fund manager Stan Druckenmiller, 59, on Friday warned that the U.S. economy is headed for a “storm” that could prove to be far worse than the financial meltdown of 2008.But first, if you’re not familiar with his name, here’s what you need to know: He’s one of the most respected and successful hedge fund managers in the past 30 years.Obviously, you don’t achieve that type of success (or notoriety) on Wall Street by running your mouth. That being said, if Druckenmiller, a former partner of billionaire liberal philanthropist George Soros, is predicting serious economic trouble for the...

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is asking those affected by Snowstorm Nemo to check on their neighbors and follow the direction of local officials as the Northeast corridor begins to dig out from under the massive blizzard. "Everyone has a role to play in the response to this winter storm," said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate in a statement released Saturday morning. "Follow the direction of your state, local and tribal officials, and if you are told to stay off the roads, stay home, and when it is safe, check on your neighbors or friends nearby who may need assistance or...

Schumer urges weather agency to keep Sandy labeled a tropical stormBy Zack Colman - 11/11/12 04:23 PM ET Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is urging the federal weather agency to avoid labeling super-storm Sandy a hurricane because doing so would raise insurance deductibles. Schumer sent a letter Sunday to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and insurance companies warning that classifying Sandy as a hurricane could boost deductibles to $20,000, compared with $1,000 for a tropical storm. Schumer says insurers are seeking to have Sandy labeled a hurricane to cut their losses from the devastating natural disaster. “Today, we’ve sent...

"I am waiting for the locusts and pestilence next,” said New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at a press conference on Wednesday, after Winter Storm Athena punished New Jersey with heavy snows, high winds, and a 3-foot storm surge. The storm brought unexpectedly high snowfall amounts along a swath from Central New Jersey northeastwards across Southeast New York, Long Island, Connecticut, and South Central Massachusetts. The 4.7" of snow that fell at New York City's Central Park was the city's earliest 4-inch snowfall on record. Right on the heels of Winter Storm Athena comes Winter Storm Brutus--a powerful low pressure system...
