"Our economy, our communities and our future rely on a strong transportation system that supports our safety and growth,"...

At a glance: Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget proposal once again includes a municipal fee that’s expected to raise $168 million for the Pennsylvania State Police. Unlike in previous years, when the proposal failed to pass the Legislature, this fee would be charged to all municipalities based partially on services rather than focusing on a specific group of communities. Across all funds, including a significant one-time infusion of COVID-19 aid via the federal government, the agency’s budget remains relatively flat at $1.38 billion. Over at the Department of Criminal Justice (corrections, probation and parole to us laypeople), total funding decreases slightly...

Gov. Tom Wolf’s new and lengthy list of reforms for law enforcement in Pennsylvania already has at least one critic: The Pennsylvania State Troopers Association. Wolf announced Thursday a number of initiatives he would like to see created, implemented, or reviewed in the state in response to the death of George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man from Minnesota who died in police custody last week. Four officers have been charged in that case, including Derek Chauvin, who is facing counts of second-degree murder and also manslaughter. HARRISBURG, Pa. — Businesses that manufacture frames that can be built into working firearms sued Pennsylvania’s attorney general on Friday, five days after he issued a legal opinion classifying the products as guns under state law. The Commonwealth Court lawsuit asks a state judge to stop the state police from implementing any new policy, including background checks, based on the written opinion the agency received Monday from Democratic Attorney General Josh Shapiro. Mr. Shapiro told state police to treat unassembled “ghost guns,” gun frames also referred to as 80% receivers, as firearms.

As investigators probe the death of a 2-year-old girl whose father led Louisiana State Police troopers on a 7-mile chase through New Orleans that ended in a fatal crash and suicide, the girl's relatives are questioning whether the deadly pursuit was necessary at all. Call it Pennsylvania’s highway robbery. A pot of money from a huge increase in fuel taxes and motorist fees under a 2013 law designed to shore up Pennsylvania’s highways and bridges is not so huge anymore, as a growing amount is getting diverted to the Pennsylvania State Police. Now, alarmed transportation planners, construction firms and engineers are looking at 12-year Department of Transportation projections that show a fattening state police budget consuming more dollars for construction projects. Lawmakers are taking notice, too.
