It was not a pretty weekend for the Iowa Hawkeyes. After jumping out to a 14-3 halftime lead against cross-state rival Iowa State, the Hawkeyes fell apart, letting the Cyclones come back to score a 20-17 victory on a last-second field goal. It’s the third time in the last four years that Iowa has dropped the rivalry game to Iowa State. For many Iowa fans, the blame for the failure, and for most of Iowa’s struggles in recent seasons, rests on the shoulders of head coach Kirk Ferentz. Things haven’t always been this bad for Ferentz. Just four years after...

Solo is the starting goalie for the U.S. national soccer team and has amazingly held this position since Bill Clinton was president (2000). Along the way, she’s won two gold medals and has recorded the most shutouts in U.S. women’s soccer history. She can add some distance to that record when the U.S. hosts Mexico in Rochester tonight. Solo is also a 33-year-old woman charged with two counts of misdemeanor domestic violence in the assault of her sister and teenage nephew. The Washington native has pleaded not guilty. Her trial is set to begin in two months. But unlike Rice...

After carefully avoiding taking a side on the issue, former Wimbledon champion Andy Murray changed course Thursday and signaled his support for Scottish independence on the day of the historic vote. The Scottish player sent out a post on Twitter early Thursday, just hours ahead of the polls opening on the referendum to break away from the United Kingdom. Murray indicated that negative campaigning by the anti-independence side had made up his mind in favor of secession. He tweeted to his 2.7 million followers: ''Huge day for Scotland today! no campaign negativity last few days totally swayed my view on...

Clearly inspired by Jesus' words 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you', a pair of Christian mixed martial artists knock each other out with simultaneous blows to their privates. Filmed for the now released 'Fight Church' documentary, the two fighters are part of the burgeoning Christian mixed martial arts movement that espouses the mantra, 'Jesus never quit, he never tapped out.' Indeed, the documentary, which was funded by $30,000 raised through crowd sourcing, attempts to answer the hard questions raised by combining religion and extreme physical violence, such as, 'Can you love your neighbor as yourself...

The National Football League’s had a tough first three weeks of the season. The league made the news again Tuesday when New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, a Democrat, introduced legislation that would put an end to the league’s tax-exempt status. Sen. Maria Cantwell, a Democrat from Washington, also reportedly plans to introduce legislation eliminating the league’s status. While Booker was pushed by the league’s handling of players involved with domestic violence, Cantwell is looking at the the NFL’s lack of force to get Washington to change its highly criticized name. Cantwell, also former chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee...

MINNEAPOLIS -- After a day of public pressure from angry fans and concerned sponsors, the Minnesota Vikings have reversed course and placed star running back Adrian Peterson on the exempt-commissioner's permission list, which means he will have to stay away from the team while he addresses child abuse charges in Texas. The move comes less than 48 hours after the Viking said Peterson would play this coming Sunday, in the third week of the National Football League season. Peterson has been indicted in Texas on felony charges of "reckless or negligent injury to a child" -- a four-year-old son --...

Anheuser-Busch, one of the NFL’s biggest sponsors, says it isn’t happy with the recent controversy that has engulfed the league. […] The league has come under fire for its handling of former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s assault of his then-fiancée. The Minnesota Vikings have also been criticized for allowing Adrian Peterson to play while he faces a charge of abuse for spanking his 4-year-old son with a wooden switch. …

Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) will introduce legislation aimed at eliminating the NFL's tax-exempt status, she announced at a press conference on Tuesday. Cantwell's motivation for introducing the legislation is the league's continued inaction against the Washington Redskins name. “The NFL needs to join the rest of Americans in the 21st century,” she said, according to The Washington Post. “It is about right and wrong.” The press conference was called by the Native American coalition Change the Mascot, which has sent a letter to 31 NFL owners urging them to take action that could lead to the Redskins name being changed.

A grand jury in Ontario County, N.Y., will decide whether Tony Stewart will face charges in connection with the Aug. 9 dirt-track accident in which the NASCAR driver struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. An investigation by the county sheriff concluded last week and the information gathered was turned over to the office of the district attorney. In announcing the end of the investigation, the sheriff’s department said the evidence included “a forensic video enhancement” or the incident at Canandaigua, N.Y., Motorsports Park.

At a time of unprecedented public scrutiny that will serve only to attract further interest of the folks who have a habit of looking for causes to support that will score points with the public, the NFL has hired a new lobbyist. The press release doesn’t describe former Deputy Assistant to the President and Counsel to the Vice President of the United States Cynthia Hogan as a lobbyist. But that’s what she’ll be. And lobbyists work their contacts aggressively within the political universe to advance the causes of their clients. (Officially, Hogan is the NFL’s Senior Vice President of Public...

“RGIII was wearing a t-shirt that said ‘Know Jesus, Know Peace.’ NFL Uniform Inspector Tony McGee (former Skins DE) approached Griffin,” Phillips tweeted. “McGee told Griffin he couldn’t wear the shirt because it wasn’t a Nike product. Made him turn it inside out for the press conference.”

The officials blew the game big time in the fourth quarter of the Colts versus Eagles game, most notably on a huge non-call of defensive holding. You never want to be those fans. You never want to be those fans that blame the officiating for the loss. Let's face it: every fanbase thinks that their team were the victims of some cheap calls that hurt them. Every fanbase is the same, and each week is no different. That's why I generally try to stay away from criticizing the officials too much. Tonight, however, is different. Tonight, whether you're a Colts...
