ARLINGTON, Texas -- Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Sunday he's concerned about the lack of African-American players and managers in baseball. In the last few weeks, two African-American managers left the game in Houston's Bo Porter, who was fired, and on Friday, Texas' Ron Washington resigned, leaving McClendon as the only black man as a manager.

Fox' Pam Oliver in the October issue of ESSENCE magazine writes a first-person account of being replaced as the net's top NFL sideline reporter by Erin Andrews and noted she "knew they hadn’t brought [Andrews] on just to be a benchwarmer" when the net hired her two years ago. Oliver: "Without official confirmation about a change in my position, I decided I was going to do my work like I always had. Still, I was humiliated."

Nearly 21 months after a female student accused Jameis Winston, Florida State’s marquee quarterback, of sexually assaulting her in his apartment, the university has begun a disciplinary inquiry into the case, the woman’s lawyer said Thursday. Florida State officials interviewed the woman last month, spending a little more than an hour asking questions, said the lawyer, John Clune. “We thought it went very well,” he said. “The school seemed to take it very seriously.” Other people connected to the case were also interviewed, he added, but he declined to identify them. Michael Sam signed with the Dallas Cowboys today after passing his physical exam with the team, according to various reports. He will be placed on the team's practice squad. Sam grew up in Galveston, Texas, about four hours south of Dallas. Sam's estranged father lives in the Dallas area.

The Cowboys have scheduled a news conference to make it official that Sam, the NFL’s first openly gay player, has been added to the practice squad. The news broke yesterday that the Cowboys would sign Sam assuming he passed his physical. Sam was drafted by the Rams and played well in the preseason, recording three sacks.
