It started as a drunken pub fight over the outcome of the Premier League title race, escalated into a double assassination and ended with the cold-blooded murder of two policewomen. But the chain of events that led to Dale Cregan murdering Pcs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes was rooted in a decade-long feud between two Manchester gangland families in which violence was their main method of communication. The Shorts and the Atkinsons had traded kneecappings, stabbings and punch-ups before calling a truce in 2009 that was shattered with devastating consequences at the Cotton Tree pub in Droylsden on May 13 last...

If you are a rookie, you are to behave as if you were paint coated on a wall. You can be seen, but you shouldn't be heard. And, above all, you shouldn't make a spectacle of yourself. Yasiel Puig comes from another baseball culture, a freer, Cuban style, and he refuses to play by the blue-collar code of this country's game. In the minor leagues, he was famous for his bat flips, even in batting practice. Already, he has developed a dugout dance with Luis Cruz or Hanley Ramirez after he hits home runs.

Now everyone can shoot like a trained marksman. For a price. A Texas-based applied technology firm has launched new smartgun technology that gives novice shooters the chance to participate in “extreme distance hunting.” TrackingPoint’s new precision guided firearm technology, XactSystem, allows the shooter to lock onto a target before allowing the gun to fire upon the intended target, much like a fighter jet’s “lock-and-launch” technology. And the firearm can consistently hit a target from over 1,000 yards away, the maker says. “Think of it like a smart rifle. You have a smart car; you got a smartphone; well, now we...

Jermaine Jones will miss World Cup qualifier with a concussion and Graham Zusi is suspended after getting two yellow cards. Injured Herculez Gomez also will miss match SEATTLE — Juergen Klinsmann went 23 months and 28 matches as coach of the U.S. national soccer team before starting the same lineup in consecutive games. The experiment didn't last long. Klinsmann, who lost midfielders Jermaine Jones and Graham Zusi in last week's win in Jamaica, will go back to the drawing board to find a starting 11 for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against unbeaten Panama at CenturyLink Field (TV: Unimas, ESPN, 7...

This one wasn't in the playbook, folks. In case you forgot, the media wanted Tim Tebow to fail. He was supposed to walk away. Fade into oblivion. Retire. Quit. Guess somebody forgot to tell Tim. Just when you thought it was over, we found out Monday afternoon the Tim Tebow show is just getting started. ESPN's Ed Werder broke the news. Tebow will sign a deal with the New England Patriots, and by Tuesday he'll be right back where he belongs. In pads and cleats, working to get better. Running. Throwing. Leading. That’s what you probably don’t realize. The Patriots...

The strange part of the circus that surrounds Tim Tebow's every move – including reports Monday that he's going to sign with the New England Patriots – is that he does so little to keep it alive. He doesn't court the media. He doesn't say outlandish things. He doesn't complain about coaching decisions or teammates. He doesn't publicly beg for another chance. Even the quarterback's outward displays of faith (Tebowing, for instance) are nothing that dozens of other NFL players don't do each week after scoring a touchdown. Tebow is a good soldier, a young player who never said he...

According to Rouillon, a sports science expert, the lesson to be learned from the preliminary results of his marathon experiment is that “bras are a false necessity”. Using a slide rule and caliper, Rouillon spent years carefully measuring changes in the orientation of breasts belonging to hundreds of women, at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (University Hospital) in Besançon. All the women involved in the study were aged between 18 and 35, although the professor was keen to stress that the group were not a representative of the global population of females.

The New England Patriots will sign Tim Tebow, league sources told ESPN's Ed Werder. The Patriots are signing Tebow, who is expected to participate in the team's mandatory minicamp Tuesday, as a quarterback, according to sources. Patriots spokesman Stacey James would not confirm that Tebow had already signed when contacted Monday by The Associated Press, saying that he did not "anticipate any additional transactions to announce tonight." The move will reunite Tebow with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who was the Broncos' head coach when Denver traded into the first round to draft the Heisman Trophy winner in 2010. Patriots...

In a fit of rage Saturday, a member of Canada's national men's ball hockey team sent an official to hospital. With Canada trailing 5-1, Justin Pender chased a Czech opponent across the rink with one second left in a quarterfinal game at the 2013 World Ball Hockey Championship in Newfoundland. Prior to the scrap, Pender is seen jawing with a Czech player during a face off. Two officials, and the Czech goalie, tried to intervene. But Pender continued to pound on the player, hitting and tangling up others in the process. Handheld video footage appears to show a referee in...

On the mound, God is always with Mariano Rivera, in victory and defeat. But baseball is a boys’ game, not a calling. And now, as he prepares to hang up his cleats, the greatest closer baseball has ever seen is embarking on his real mission. As anyone who follows baseball knows, Mariano Rivera has built his career on one pitch. A cut fastball, or “cutter,” it travels at 90 or 92 miles an hour, and then, a few feet before it reaches home plate, it moves half a foot off course, a trick of physics that looks like telekinesis. Rivera’s cutter...
