Israeli top-flight soccer team Beitar Jeruslaem announced on Sunday that it would rename itself after US President Donald Trump. The club said in a statement that the move came as a thank you for Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The US is slated to formally open its new embassy in Jerusalem on Monday, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the founding of Israel. “For 70 years Jerusalem has been awaiting international recognition, until President Donald Trump, in a courageous move, recognized Jerusalem as the eternal capital of Israel,” the club said in a statement. “President Trump has...

How much would you pay to put on a modern-day Battle of the Sexes tennis match? According to tennis great John McEnroe, Donald Trump was willing to pay $1 million. On Wednesday, McEnroe was interviewed on “In Depth with Graham Bensinger,” and revealed that 20 years ago, the not-yet-president offered him a decent chunk of change to play either Serena Williams or Venus Williams. According to McEnroe, he got an envelope while he was calling a match in 1998. It was from Donald Trump, who McEnroe was definitely aware of at the time — he called Trump a “promoter galore.”...

Kansas University’s cheerleading team has been put on probation after two female members came forward last year with stories of being subjected to physically and emotionally abusive hazing, which allegedly included forced nudity. Following an internal investigation into the victims’ accounts, the team was found to have violated university policy on harm to persons and hazing, and placed on probation beginning last September and running through September of this year, according to the Kansas State Collegian.

The Cubs and Marlins almost got into it during their Tuesday night game, key word “almost.” What was shaping up to be a bench-clearing brawl quickly turned into meeting at home plate where they ... tickled each other? Here’s the reason for the benches clearing in the first place: Miami second baseman Derek Dietrich plowed through Chicago catcher Victor Caratini in the 4th inning. Dietrich was out, words were exchanged and the benches emptied. But things never really got out of hand, as a few players from each side kind of just met at the plate. Then some tickling happened....

Bailey Davis couldn’t wait for the calendar reveal party. This was her second year as a member of the Saintsations, the New Orleans Saints cheerleaders, and she’d worked so much harder on toning her body for the calendar shoot than she had as a rookie. She’d been eating clean, going to Pure Barre and CrossFit and she’d even won a plank competition by holding the pose for 33 minutes. The result was her very first six-pack, a tangible sign of her discipline. She hoped that six-pack would help her make the cut—her own month on the calendar.

I met Kurt Diemberger maybe 20 years ago at a slide show in Boulder, Colorado. I had already ready read the book about the tragedy of his climb on K2. This is the song his partner, Julie Tullis liked and which Kurt named the book after. Details of the climb, song at link. A British woman who began serious mountain climbing after age 40 tells her life story, with special emphasis on how she made a new career as an award-winning mountain cinematographer in what were to be the last five years of her life. She died in 1986, descending...

At last: Game over. Series over. For the first time in 20 years, a D.C. team in one of the four major pro sports is moving on to the conference finals. Let that sink in. The Capitals were the last to do it, in 1998, when they eliminated the Senators in five games in the second round and then ousted the Sabres in six games to clinch their only Eastern Conference title in franchise history. With Evgeny Kuznetsov’s breakaway goal less than six minutes into overtime, Washington improved to 2-9 all-time in postseason series against the Penguins; the Capitals’ only...

Sources confirmed to The Washington Post that San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon will interview for the head coaching job with the Milwaukee Bucks. The news of Hammon’s interview was first reported by ESPN on Friday night. Hammon, 41, has spent the past four seasons working as an assistant under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio. When she was hired in 2014, she was the first full-time female assistant coach in any of the four major American pro sports, and she coached San Antonio’s Las Vegas summer league entry to the league title the following summer. Hammon spent 16 years...

HOUSTON -- The Yankees were staring at the possibility of settling for a solid road trip and a well-fought rematch of the American League Championship Series, but a ninth-inning rally vs. the Astros produced a better outcome for the Bombers, who could savor an even happier flight home on Thursday afternoon.

When the Washington Redskins took their cheerleading squad to Costa Rica in 2013 for a calendar photo shoot, the first cause for concern among the cheerleaders came when Redskins officials collected their passports upon arrival at the resort, depriving them of their official identification. For the photo shoot, at the adults-only Occidental Grand Papagayo resort on Culebra Bay, some of the cheerleaders said they were required to be topless, though the photographs used for the calendar would not show nudity. Others wore nothing but body paint. Given the resort’s secluded setting, such revealing poses would not have been a concern...

Held in Socorro, New Mexico, college contestants competed in the Grand Canyon Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) for a chance to go to nationals. Men’s Rodeo Team Jake Burwash finished second in the saddle bronc riding competition. Wyatt Hershberger had a pretty good weekend at the last college rodeo of the year. His times of 9.2 and 9.4 in the calf roping were good enough to win the average. In the short go for team roping, Hershberger took fifth place. The men’s team finished in third place. Jake Burwash, a rough stock rider (saddle bronc, bulls, and...

It’s become a major trend, when tax season arrives, cable and satellite subscriber numbers tank according to Nielsen estimates. I don’t know if that’s because come spring tax season everyone looks at their yearly budgets and many people, in an effort to save money, decide they don’t need cable and satellite subscriptions any longer, or whether the end of the NFL, college football, and college basketball causes many sports fans to tune out for the summer. But regardless of the reason cord cutting in the spring has become an annual trend And the start of this spring was brutal for...

Donning beards and wigs, they disguised themselves as men so they could watch their team, Persepolis, play rivals Sepidrood at the Azadi stadium in Tehran last Friday. Although there's no official ban on women going to sporting events in Iran, it is rare for them to attend as they are often refused entry. Prior to the Islamic revolution of 1979, women were allowed to attend sporting events. Women have been punished for attending games in the past. In 2014, British-Iranian activist Ghoncheh Ghavami was detained after attempting to watch a men's...

GENEVA — An unexpected snowstorm coupled with high winds killed four climbers in the Swiss Alps and left five others in critical condition early Monday after they became trapped overnight and couldn’t reach shelter, officials said. A total of 14 hikers from France, Germany and Italy were left stranded in the Pigne d’Arolla region, police in southwestern Valais canton said. Authorities deployed seven helicopters as part of rescue efforts. The climbers were caught off-guard by high winds, snow and bitter cold, and were forced to spend the night outdoors, Valais police spokesman Markus Rieder said.

[snip] The beer tölt is a fun, quirky equestrian game. Riders saddle up their trusty Icelandic horses and set off, mug of beer in hand. They then put their mounts through their paces while trying not to slosh their brew all over the place. At the end of the game, the rider who spills the least then gets to drink the most (nonalcoholic beverages such as root beer are used in kids’ versions). The whole point of the game is to both test the riders’ skills and show off the steadiness of the tölt, the breed’s unique gait. Icelandic horses...
