CHAMPAIGN, Illinois – Shootings at or near the University of IllinoisUrbana-Champaign and a related hit-and-run incident early Sunday morning left at least five people wounded and one person dead, police said. In a statement, the city of Champaign said at least one suspect in the shooting is still at large, and the driver in the hit-and-run is still being sought.

On Saturday, Mayor Ras Baraka had asked the citizens of Newark to observe 24 hours of nonviolence, but violence flared nevertheless. Six people were shot and killed in Newark in a little over 72 hours — a time spanning Friday night to early Tuesday morning. The first incident began at 2:17 a.m. local time when police received reports of gunshots, Austin Police Chief of Staff Brian Manley said in a news conference.
