A Baltimore City Council member introduced a replica gun ban Monday criminalizing the possession of any toy or imitation weapon that can reasonably be perceived to be a real firearm.
Councilman James Kraft told The Baltimore Sun he sponsored the legislation to protect the citys youth.
In April, city police officers shot 14-year-old Dedric Colvin in the shoulder and leg on a street in East Baltimore. Colvin was carrying a BB gun officers said resembled a semiautomatic pistol.
Similar incidents have unfolded across the country. Last week police officers in Columbus, Ohio, shot and killed 13-year-old Tyree King after the teen pulled a BB gun from his waistband during questioning over a reported armed robbery in the area.
The easiest way to resolve this is to get the replica guns off the streets, Kraft said Monday.
The bill punishes possession of replicas including BB guns, air rifles and pellet guns with a $250 fine for first offenses and a $1,000 fine for all subsequent offenses. Repeat offenders who are caught more than twice with the replicas face a misdemeanor charge and a maximum 30-day jail sentence.

If only we could ban stupid people, (and politicians).

It takes a village to raise the children and the village raises them to be stupid.
I’m glad I was raised by my parents way back in the dark ages.
Nothing said about a potential perp packing a pistol shaped Pop-Tart. Are those banned, too?
All of my firearms are actually real and fire real bullets, with the exception of my Crossman pellet gun.I can’t imagine what I would do with a replica toy.Maybe terrorize my cat?
Blacks bring this sort of idiocy upon themselves as they are unable to govern themselves without mayhem or violence.
The police are behind the eight-ball, not knowing if the brandished object is real or fake. If they shoot someone with a toy, the rest of the hood goes completely bonkers.
Police would be well-advised to ratchet down the policing so as to protect themselves, as no one else will protect them.
When toy guns are outlawed, only outlaw children will have toy guns.
Street cred, yo.
Ban Pop-Tarts? My wife already did. So my boys and I reserve them and Twinkies as last stop at Walmart on the way out of town to go hiking and camping.

Isn’t there already a law or practice that toy guns have orange barrel tips or similar? Enforce the law.
Anybody remember the old Woody Allen movie “Take The Money and Run”.
He robbed a bank with a bar of soap carved out to the shape of a gun. ;-)
Ban soap—for the children!
Including graham crackers and pop-tarts?
Yes.
I've used my BB gun to take out gophers and rats that came through my back yard. A lot quieter and easier than using a regular handgun, and didn't bring a swat team around. Now with all the fear being spread, a swat team will come around if my BB gun is spotted. It's getting so you can no longer point with your index finger lest you get it blown off by cops.
There goes my old Thompson replica a local rancher made for me back in 1950!
And my old clothespin gun I learned to make in 1960!
The guns are so life-like that you can even experience the thrill of knowing who Dianne Feinstein is, and hating her and her stupid face !
Do fried chicken legs count?
Depends, are we talking high-capacity chicken legs?
