Police have named the man who died at a Hobart beach from a suspected stingray puncture wound, while an expert in the marine species has urged calm despite increased numbers of the animals in Tasmanian waters. Nicolas Ricketts, 42, died from cardiac arrest on Saturday shortly after he sustained the injury to his lower abdomen, believed to have been inflicted by a stingray, while swimming at Lauderdale, east of Hobart. Friends and family of Mr Ricketts, known widely as "Ned" who worked as a plumber and had served with the Australian Navy, gathered at the spot where he died yesterday....

Seals are cute and fun to watch. They’re also a nuisance on Cape Cod, where tens of thousands of them are eating fish that might otherwise be caught by Cape fishermen and drawing great white sharks that are occasionally attacking swimmers at Cape beaches. A man was seriously injured by a great white shark August 15 in Truro, and another man was killed by a great white on September 15 in Wellfleet. These attacks, while sad, aren’t surprising. In fact, given the explosion of seals and sharks in recent years, it’s remarkable it has taken this long. More such attacks...

Evander Kane of the Sharks is the target of a $6 million dollar lawsuit filed by a woman who claims the 27-year-old star reneged on a promise to compensate her for having an abortion. The unidentified woman said Kane got her pregnant and he finally coerced her into having an abortion last June by offering her $3 million, TMZ first reported. She claimed it was the second time Kane forced her to have an abortion and that he has refused to pay her.

THIS is the terrifying moment a woman falls into a SHARK tank during feeding time at a Chinese shopping mall. The woman miraculously survived despite splashing in the water as two sharks circled her for around a minute. The woman was pulled from the water by two security guards and walked away uninjured, according to local reports. The accident occurred yesterday at the Wuyue Plaza in Jiaxing, east China's Zhejiang Province, before the mall had opened for trading. Terrifying footage shows the woman walking along the footage bridge before tripping over and plunging into the water. A crowd then gathers...

"I was scared I was going to witness the death of this guy": That's what one visitor had to say after a man decided to go skinny dipping with the sharks at Ripley's Aquarium of Canada. The man stripped down and then went over a security barrier and jumped, completely naked, into the Toronto aquarium's largest exhibit Friday night. It's called the "Dangerous Lagoon," and a spokesperson for Toronto Police Service tells the CBC the man's stunt was, in fact, "extremely dangerous" to him, the marine animals in the tank, and the staff that tried to get him out of...

The rock carvings -- known as petroglyphs -- have been discovered in their thousands atop hillocks in the Konkan region of western Maharashtra. Mostly discovered in the Ratnagiri and Rajapur areas, a majority of the images etched on the rocky, flat hilltops remained unnoticed for thousands of years... animals, birds, human figures and geometrical designs are all depicted. The way the petroglyphs have been drawn, and their similarity to those found in other parts of the world, have led experts to believe that they were created in prehistoric times and are possibly among the oldest ever discovered. "Our first deduction...

Researchers from Monterey bay Aquarium and Stanford University discovered an area the size of Colorado between California and Hawaii that appears to be a “White Shark Café,” but it is unclear if the sharks are there for food or sex. The San Francisco Chronicle reported on Monday that authorities are trying to determine why these sharks spend months on an annual pilgrimage in winter and spring to the deep sea. Scientists say that it appears the sharks are out there to feast on the abundant amount of squid and small fish in the region. “They are telling us this incredible...

Scientists have identified the first species of shark that is not solely carnivorous. The bonnethead shark, a smaller relative of the hammerhead, has been found to digest vast amounts of seagrass as well as meat. The shark was long thought to be a strict carnivore that occasionally ingested greens by accident, passing them through the gut without processing them properly. But in tests they proved better at digesting vegetable matter than a panda and almost as good as sea turtles, suggesting plants are a key part of their diet.

A mako shark tagged off the coast of Texas has made an incredible journey to the other side of the country – and it doesn’t appear to be turning back any time soon. Researchers with Ocearch tagged the 7.5-foot-long shark, Pico, back in March and say he pinged just outside of Virginia this past weekend. At more than 4,100 miles to date, the team says Pico’s adventure is unprecedented, marking the first time they’ve ever seen a mako crossing from the Gulf of Mexico up into the Atlantic Ocean.

Heavy rainfall in Calvert County, Maryland over the weekend led to a toothy discovery, the state’s department of natural resources announced Monday: prehistoric shark teeth. The shark teeth were unearthed in a creek in Huntingtown, the department said, which called the teeth a “cool find” and “jaws-dropping treasures.” Huntingtown received roughly 8 inches of rain since Saturday, FOX5 reported. “They’re huge!” one Facebook user said of the find. “Awesome,” another wrote.

So when model Katarina Zarutskie visited with her boyfriend and his family last month, she was keen to make the most of the beautiful sights. After a family lunch in an area known as Staniel Cay, Katarina spotted people snorkelling and interacting with a pack of nurse sharks nearby. Despite concern from her boyfriend's family, she was keen to get into the waters to get some photographs with them. "From my previous knowledge from surfing and scuba diving, I know nurse sharks are usually very safe," she tells the BBC. "I've seen countless photos of people with them on Instagram."...

On Cape Cod, sharks have become an accepted part of the local lifestyle. Souvenir shops are filled with shark-themed items: snow globes, jewelry, stuffed animals, even fossilized shark teeth. A purple flag emblazoned with a white shark flies at Nauset Beach year-round, indicating the presence of dangerous marine life. Safety signs reading “Be Shark Smart” welcome visitors entering the Orleans waterfront.

Aerial photos have captured odd gatherings of almost 1,400 basking sharks and researchers aren't totally sure what it is the animals are up to. It’s not uncommon to see the sharks individually, but seeing them in large groups is rare. It’s still unclear why the animals are coming together, but researchers suggest they are likely gathering in the waters from Long Island to Nova Scotia to grab a bite, according to recent findings published in the Journal of Fish Biology. The scientists studied aerial photos taken between June 1980 and November 2013 and found 10 large groups of the sharks...

Warner Bros has dropped the first trailer for summer shark pic The Meg. The Jason Statham-starrer is a sci-fi thriller about a prehistoric 75-foot-long predator, the Megalodon, who threatens the lives of a research team trapped underwater — and, yes, the fate of the ocean itself. As far as summer popcorn fare, the tagline says it all: “Chomp On This.”

This is the incredible moment a whale shark gulped down a never-before-photographed 'tornado' of plankton. Warren Baverstock, 49, hung a single light off the back of a boat to attract the phytoplankton that the huge fish love to eat - and then waited patiently out in the dark ocean. He was delighted when a 11.4ft juvenile whale shark rose from the depths to gobble up the plumes of gathering food, and he hopped in to capture silhouetted by the light.

Just before the attack, there was a lull in the waves. In the calm, she played on her surfboard, kneeling on its face to practice balancing—and then she slipped. The majority of her body was back on her board, out of the water, when she screamed and jerked her feet upwards, kicking away from biting teeth. The shark surfaced then, rising above the water to reveal an eye, a belly, a fin. Then it disappeared. Natalie Jones, an Oakland resident and former reporter for the Light, suffered bites to both of her feet from a juvenile or subadult—likely 10 to...

The shark carcasses were gutted and had their fins removed. They were found in the township of Yurecuaro in Michoacan state, which has a problem with gangs and drug cartel violence.

You can dream of ringing in the New Year, blissfully walking in a winter wonderland. But you'll probably end up just trying to find shelter from the big Arctic freeze. Across the US, New Year's Eve is expected to be 20 to 40 degrees colder than usual this year (except for the Southwest, because they're lucky like that). So if you plan on counting down to 2018 outdoors on Sunday night, be prepared to wrap yourself up, because it's going to be some kind of cold out there.
