Residents in western Mexico were mystified when the carcasses of 300 sharks were found dumped by a roadside in their town, which lies about 150 miles from the sea.

The shark carcasses were gutted and had their fins removed. They were found in the township of Yurecuaro in Michoacan state, which has a problem with gangs and drug cartel violence.

Geez, what a mess. I can imagine the smell and rodents and flies will be in abundance.

Fins removed? Sounds like somebody is harvesting them and selling them in China, “Scientists estimate that 25 species of sharks and rays risk going extinct within our lifetime. Shark fins can fetch up to $650 USD per kilogram. A single Whale Shark pectoral fin can sell for up to $20,000 USD and a Basking Shark pectoral fin can fetch up to $50,000 USD.”

I can’t imagine the narcos getting involved in this.

Sounds like for shark fin soup which is an Asian/far eastern specialty. China harvests the sharks and removes the find, then throws them back in where they die because they can't swim without their fins.

I wonder if Mexico runs a cannery for it to market to Asians in the Americas but that doesn't explain frozen carcasses.

The only way to solve this problem is to repatriate the entire village to small town America.

“The shark carcasses were gutted...”

Trained sharks used to smuggle drugs up the coast. The fins are pure bonus profit - or just a diversion.

Well the picture in the article doesn’t show any gutted sharks missing their fins...

And the fins themselves are basically tasteless as cartilage is tasteless.

The Post was too lazy to do reporting, so found a stock image from Getty Images. Pathetic.
