Seals are cute and fun to watch. Theyre also a nuisance on Cape Cod, where tens of thousands of them are eating fish that might otherwise be caught by Cape fishermen and drawing great white sharks that are occasionally attacking swimmers at Cape beaches.
A man was seriously injured by a great white shark August 15 in Truro, and another man was killed by a great white on September 15 in Wellfleet. These attacks, while sad, arent surprising. In fact, given the explosion of seals and sharks in recent years, its remarkable it has taken this long. More such attacks are likely next year.
So what can be done about them?
Nothing.
Thats the answer from a public forum this week sponsored by the Cape Cod National Seashore, as reported by the Cape Cod Times.
Federal law protects seals, so their numbers cant be reduced by hunting to the point where not so many great white sharks would be attracted to the area. Federal law also protects great white sharks, so fishermen cant catch them, either.
What are the human beings left with?
Nothing, at the moment.

Do seals make good eating?
Bring back seal coats and seal leathers!..................Softest leather ever!
Andrew Zimmern claims seal tastes like a cross between roast beef and clams. Based on that description, I will not be trying seal meat until I am trapped in the arctic and starving.
Maybe we should call the migrant caravan a “People-nado”
The Hollywood inspired fear of sharks has little basis in reality. Of the more than 480 identified species of sharks only four are considered dangerous to humans. Billions of people go into the sea every year for work and or recreation. Shark attacks are so rare that people worrying about them should buy lottery tickets. In 2017 there were 155 incidents involving human/shark interaction. Of those only 88 were unprovoked attacks. That means that 67 were the result of people violating the 11th commandment... “Thou shalt not be conspicuously stupid.” Grabbing, feeding or trying to play with sharks falls under that heading. The remaining 88 were almost all instances of mistaken identity since humans are not part of the diet of any predators on land or in the sea. Of all 155 shark related incidents, just five (5!) were fatal.
Of course that’s cold comfort to the families of the five unluckiest people on the planet in 2017. But I am not loosing sleep over this and will not be deterred from going to the beach.
Was going to say— roast beef/and clams. So, the sharks would love that combo (were they to have taste buds and a tongue, which they do not, but do have neural sensors)-— they’d be “sensing” and thinking-— “mmmmmm humans... taste just like seals and a lot less hide to bite through”.
Nature is red in tooth and claw— but Bostonians think that humans can control the weather by controlling human behaviour they cannot prove causes.... weather. Pretzel Logic.
For some reason, white sharks are also a protected species.
For seafood lovers, white shark is said to taste sort of like mako shark, the best-tasting shark meat.
Great White sharks are not “man eaters”, they are “man tasters”. They usually take a bite and leave the rest.
Of course, with teeth like that, one bite can kill ya.
When it was plentiful we used to wrap cubed mako shark steaks with bacon, sprinkle it with garlic salt, and grill it — sometimes over mesquite.
Good eats!
Nature, left to its own devices will keep the balance.
Seals feed on fish, sharks feed on seals. When sharks eat enough seals the fish population increases and as seal population lessens so then will numbers of sharks in the area.
Humans are not part of this natural equation and therefore enter the domain of these creatures at their own risk.
Got news for you. It isn’t just Bostonians.
Eskimos eat em.
“The remaining 88 were almost all instances of mistaken identity since humans are not part of the diet of any predators on land or in the sea.”
Huh?
The Left pretty much destroyed the fishing industry up in New England with those attitudes in the article.
It pales in comparison to what is going on in England with the EU and their fishing rights. I read an article just recently about that, and it sounded like a casus belli.
How they haven’t followed through with Brexit is beyond me. I think England is lost.
Sharks? Beware the mosqitoe...
The most deadly animal in the world is the mosquito. It might seem impossible that something so miniscule can kill so many people, but it’s true. According to the World Health Organization, mosquito bites result in the deaths of more than 1 million people every year. The majority of these deaths are due to malaria.

A distant second in North America is the White Tail Deer that kills about 130 people yearly. (Deer vs Car)
Why is President Trump doing this?
