To be fair, Bill Nye didn’t actually say people should be eliminated by their governments to save the environment and the planet. He did say that there are too many people and parents, at least in the developed world, should be punished for having “too many” children: The season finale of pop scientist Bill Nye's new Netflix show "Bill Nye Saves the World" suggested that the government should punish people who have too many children, for the sake of the environment. "The average Nigerian emits 0.1 metric tons of carbon annually," noted Nye's guest, Dr. Travis Rieder. "How many does the average...

MARCY — Danfoss Silicon Power has begun posting job openings for its new facility at the Computer Chip Commercialization Center, also called the Quad-C, on the SUNY Polytechnic Institute campus. The company, based in Germany, is in the preliminary stages of scaling up inside the Quad-C so it can start commercial production in the first quarter of next year, according to site general manager Michael Hennessey. “With a little luck and a lot of hard work, that’s our plan,” he said of the timetable. As of Wednesday, the company’s website began showing several positions that specifically list the Oneida County...

An Indonesian man who claimed to be the world's oldest human at 146 years old has died, his family say. Mbah Gotho, a great-great granddad from Central Java, outlived his four wives, 10 siblings and all of his children. He was reportedly hospitalised on April 12, but insisted on checking out six days later so he could be taken home. He died shortly after, having "refused" to eat or drink. Mbah hit the headlines last year after presenting documentation showing he was born in December 1870.

lying soldiers have been historically confined to science fiction or comic books, but a British inventor may be about to change the course of warfare. Richard Browning, who has been dubbed the ‘Iron Man’ of Wiltshire, has constructed a personal flight suit and amazed delegates at this year’s TED Conference when he lifted off from the short of Vancouver Harbour. Mr Browning, a Royal marine reserve, said a member the British military had already displayed interest in the suit, and had told him that the Ministry of Defence had given up on the idea of flying soldiers until they saw...

Italian neurosurgeon Sergio Canavero will undertake the first human head transplant later this year in China, the doctor told German magazine Ooom in an article published Thursday. And, following that effort, he will revive a cryogenically frozen brain and transplant it into a donor body within the next three years. The plans, completely disconnected from reality and the state of modern medicine, are at least in line with his previous outlandish goals and dubious animal research. Canavero made headlines in the past few years by claiming that transplanting the whole head of a human onto a donor body is currently...
  • Astronauts are baffled by Trump's space travel plans

American astronauts may be walking on Mars in the next eight years, or ideally the next four, if President Donald Trump has his way. But the new timetable has baffled experts in space travel. (AUDIO-AT-LINK) The surprise announcement — or rather instruction — took place this week during a live video conference between President Trump and veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson, who is currently aboard the International Space Station. During the conversation, Trump asked Whitson when it would be possible to send a human to Mars. She gave a careful and detailed answer explaining that a trip to the Red Planet...
  • If Bill Nye is a “scientist,” so am I

It has come to my attention that anyone can call themselves a “scientist” these days. Anyone can call themselves anything these days, it seems, and the whole mass of humanity must comply. A man can call himself a woman. A woman can call herself a man. Beyonce can call herself a singer. And a guy who made soda volcanoes on television in the 90’s can put himself forward as a scientific authority on all subjects. In fact, Bill Nye is apparently such a sciency scientist that he feels perfectly comfortable lecturing any news outlet who dares interview any scientist other...

First, the bad news: GDP is slowing all over the world because productivity has been in decline for two decades. The result has been higher unemployment (especially among young people) and economists talking about 20 more years of slow growth. According to new numbers from Oxfam, just eight people are as rich as half the globe. In addition to this unprecedented inequality, we face climate change that’s taken us into the sixth extinction wave in the history of the planet, and the last time that happened was 65 million years ago. To turn things around before it’s too late, we...

Say goodbye to so-called "global warming." If the huge amounts of snowfall that buried the Sierra this past winter continue, we will soon witness the comeback of Tahoe glacier This is not as far-fetched as you may think. In fact, if history is any guide it is inevitable. Not only inevitable, the process may have already begun. California’s Squaw Valley ski resort, just west of Lake Tahoe, has been buried beneath more than 58 feet of snowfall this season. That’s enough snow to completely cover a five-story building.

... I'm certain (or at least willing to believe) that the organizers were truly motivated by a desire for evidence-based policymaking to conquer superstition and emotion. But, as I review the smug "look at how enlightened we are for marching" pictures and posts on social media, I realize that the leaders and the crowd might not have the same motivations. ... Now do a thought experiment: Imagine if you showed up to that march with science that supported an anti-abortion position (just as one example) do you think you would have been welcomed? Imagine if science told us that life...
  • How Trump Could Make Your Drugs Cheaper ... If He Dares

For the more than 3 million Americans infected with potentially deadly hepatitis C, a relatively new cocktail of drugs is considered a miracle cure. The problem: Gilead Sciences’ list price is $84,000 for a 12-week treatment. From Martin Shkreli’s Turing Pharmaceuticals jacking up the AIDS drug Daraprim from $13.50 per pill to $750 in a single day to Mylan’s allergy-fighting EpiPens rising from $100 to $600 in just a few years, Americans are getting sick of astonishing drug prices. It’s why Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders both used their presidential campaigns to roast Big Pharma. In a primary-season rally in...

What we are reporting here isn't fake news. But it doesn't feel exactly like real news, either. It's in that foggy realm of Trump news in which everything is slightly ambiguous and wobbly and internally inconsistent and almost certainly improvisational and not actually grounded in what you could call “government policy.” What happened was: Trump called the International Space Station and talked to astronauts and, in passing, mentioned that he's going to send Americans to Mars, and soon, like really lickety-split. Trump was marking the historic achievement of astronaut Peggy Whitson, the commander of the International Space Station, who set...
  • Bill Nye blows gasket when a real scientist schools him on facts about ‘climate change’

Bill Nye, known for his 1990’s science kid’s show who has since become an outspoken advocate on “climate change,” accused CNN of doing a “disservice” to its audience on Saturday by having a real scientist on their network to discuss climate change. The CNN “New Day Saturday” panel, which included Nye and William Happer, a physicist at Princeton University,” became heated after Happer said the climate change that Nye talks about is a “myth.” “There’s this myth that’s developed around carbon dioxide that it’s a pollutant, but you and I both exhale carbon dioxide with every breath. Each of...

Bill Nye was invited to speak on CNN’s New Day Saturday program for Earth Day, along with May Boeve, the executive director of green action group 350.org; and William Happer, a climate change skeptic and physicist at Princeton. Nye was clearly exasperated with Happer’s claims, and annoyed that CNN had invited him. To enthusiastic nods from Boeve, Nye said, “I will say, much as I love the CNN, you’re doing a disservice by having one climate change skeptic and not 97 or 98 scientists or engineers concerned about climate change.” (CNN is hardly the first media organization to give these...

In 2004, the Pentagon began development of the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a 15-ton conventional bomb specifically designed to collapse all but the deepest buried facilities in Iran and North Korea. MOP was ready for combat in 2011. Each of the Air Force's 20 B-2 stealth bombers based at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri can carry two of the 21-foot-long munitions.

While there have been plenty of ridiculous protests against President Trump — including marches with hats resembling female genitalia — there is now an over-the-top “protest in space.” In solidarity with the upcoming March for Science, the Autonomous Space Agency Network (ASAN) launched a balloon into space this week with a message reportedly directed at Trump. The important message that needed to be broadcast above Earth was the phrase “LOOK AT THAT, YOU SON OF A B*TCH,” in the form of a tweet. Behold:

Realists must now sway public opinion firmly against global warming scare President Donald Trump is right to kill the hugely expensive Clean Power Plan (CPP). After all, it only controls carbon dioxide (CO2), which is simply plant food. The Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change cites over 1,000 peer-reviewed studies showing that rising atmospheric CO2 enhances productivity of forests and grasslands. Commercial greenhouses run at up to about four times the outside level of CO2 to boost plant growth.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has gained traction in recent years and is now used across a wide range of industries for the quick and easy fabrication of complex materials. 3D printing is now set to revolutionise the medical industry, especially in regenerative medicine, as it enables cells, tissues and organs to be printed on demand. These biological components are traditionally cultured for long periods of time, using various gaseous and chemical environments so that they grow. Aside from the timescales, standard culturing methods can easily go awry if there is even a small, and often accidental or unavoidable change in the...

Even if a guy has a great personality, a woman looking for a date still hopes he's at least a little cute, a new study suggests. Researchers asked young women (ages 15 to 29) to choose potential dates from a series of photographs and descriptions, while the women's mothers (ages 37 to 61) were asked to select possible boyfriends for their daughters using the same information. Results showed that a man's looks influenced both groups of women more strongly than his personality profile. This held true even if a man's profile was filled with highly desirable personal qualities, such as...
