(VIDEO-AT-LINK)The Federal Trade Commission warns those looking for Section 8 housing help, that scammers have made websites that look like registration sites for Section 8 waiting list lotteries. "If you pay a fee or give your personal information, the scammers will take it. And you still won't be on a real Section 8 waiting list. In fact, there is no fee to register for a Section 8 waiting list," explains Lisa Lake, FTC Consumer Education specialist. Section 8 housing is government subsidized rent assistance for low income families who qualify. Section 8 is a program so much in demand that...

Natural scientists agree that the climate is changing and that humans bear some of the blame. Social scientists are now attempting to assess the economic and political price societies are likely to pay for turning up our planet’s thermostat. The security policy community is especially eager for an answer. In the academy, the debate over climate change and its security implications gained momentum after researchers from Stanford, the University of California Berkeley, New York University, and Harvard observed that civil wars were more prevalent during years that experience hotter temperatures. The chief explanation for this relationship is that higher temperatures...

City lawyers warned Dominique Sharpton not to delete Instagram photos like this one atop an Indonesian mountain — where she trekked while claiming in a lawsuit that she has “permanent” injuries. The city Law Department sent Rev. Al’s daughter a letter telling her to preserve all of the damning evidence that she posted on her social-media accounts. The warning comes after The Post revealed that Dominique Sharpton has been globe-trotting despite her May 7 suit that says she will never fully recover from a sprained ankle she suffered on an uneven Soho street.
  • New twist on $ scam sends armed officers to victim [SWAT-ting]

Police are warning about an old scam with a new a very dangerous twist and Wednesday night, a Church Hill woman became a victim. Nicole Smith got a call that said she owed almost $1,000 to the IRS. When she refused to pay the scammers, they called the police on her. (snip) Smith then called her ex-husband to tell him what happened, but the ordeal wasn't over. The same person called back telling her to look out her window. "There were four police cars outside my window! I was panicked because I couldn't believe, how did he get four police...

Washington (CNN)In a rare joint action with attorneys general for each of the 50 states, the Federal Trade Commission says four cancer charities run by extended members of the same family conned donors out of $187 million from 2008 through 2012 and spent almost nothing to help actual cancer patients. Federal Trade Commission: Four cancer charities a sham Federal Trade Commission: Four cancer charities a sham Each of the charities charged were the subject of extensive reporting by CNN in 2013. And in each instance, none of the four charities would comment. We were ordered out of the building at...

Pull Battery Power Out of Thin Air with Nikola Labs Nikola Tesla pioneered the transmission of electricity over wires. Heinrich Hertz proved it could be transmitted wirelessly. But we still use 19th centre technology to power 21st century devices. Nikola Labs — which pitched today on stage after being selected by TechCrunch editorial team and the audience as the Wild Card choice from Startup Alley — launched a device that converts radio frequencies into DC power, and, they claim, can therefore power devices. Today they launched their first product using the technology: a case for an iPhone 6. It converts...

There are a lot of purchases you can make with the information on the front of a credit card. But ID thieves who have the card number, name, and expiration date will still hit a speedbump if they have to enter that (usually 3-digit) security code on the back of a victim’s card. Notice that we said “speedbump” and not “dead end,” because some scammers have figured out how to get this crucial info from their victims. According to our colleagues at Consumer Reports, the security code scam works by taking advantage of the near-constant news of data breaches that...

Wednesday is Earth Day. Like Earth Hour in March, this celebration will be yet another complaint-fest about how our modern lifestyles, especially our CO2 emissions, are destroying the planet. Why not be positive, for once? Instead of blaming carbon “criminals,” maybe Earth Day should celebrate carbon heroes. Here are the 10 countries with the lowest CO2 emissions per capita, according to the World Bank.

Abandon everything you’ve ever been told about cynical journalists. If you want to melt the frozen heart of a reporter, just whisper in his ear that he’s a finalist in some journalism prize contest. It won’t matter how insignificant or unknown the prize is, whether it’s local or national, whether he’s won one before or not, or whether it comes with a cash prize or just an acrylic trophy. Most journalists can refer to themselves as “prize winning” in their biographical notes because prizes seem to outnumber journalists these days. “Everybody has won, and all must have prizes,” as the...

If anything needs cutting or confiscating is the politicians' power and insatiable desire to spend the taxpayers' money The Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, gave a speech on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, in which he proposed, among other things, raising the retirement age from 67 to 69. He stated that, “We should remember that Social Security at its core should be retirement insurance. I’m suggesting that Americans pay into the system throughout the course of their life, knowing that it will be there, if they need it, to support them in their later years, so seniors will not grow...

Just found a charge on my AMEX each month from a company called Video Blocks, of Reston Virginia. 79 bucks a month. I've no idea who these people are. Something to do as a download service. I've never heard of them. I called them of course, and their customer service center is a boiler room full of phonies handling complaints...I could hear other conversations in the back ground. They couldn't find me on their system, or tell me what I'm buying for 79 a month, or how long I've been a customer. Obviously a dodge. Anyone know anything?

Popular astrophysicist and anointed spokesperson for science Neil deGrasse Tyson is not impressed by the recent antics of Republican leaders, from Sen. Ted Cruz’s directive that NASA stop focusing on Earth to Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s reported ban on the term “climate change.” “I don’t know if our country has any precedent for emergent scientific truths to be debated on political grounds,” he said during a live appearance in Sarasota, Florida, referring to the aforementioned censorship. “I’m astonished by that. Astonished and disappointed. I thought as a nation we were above this.” Tyson, who is the director of the Hayden...

Weird, huh? We wonder why it chose not to use “Obamacare” or “Affordable Care Act.” Oh, that’s right. This is why; Check out just how “affordable” it is:

(H/T Bishop Hill) The paper – Rethinking the lower bound on aerosol radiative forcing by Bjorn Stevens of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany, published in the American Meteorological Society journal – finds that the effects of aerosols on climate are much smaller than those in almost all the computer models used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

A hundred years from now, humans may remember 2014 as the year that we first learned that we may have irreversibly destabilized the great ice sheet of West Antarctica, and thus set in motion more than 10 feet of sea level rise. Meanwhile, 2015 could be the year of the double whammy — when we learned the same about one gigantic glacier of East Antarctica, which could set in motion roughly the same amount all over again. Northern hemisphere residents and Americans in particular should take note — when the bottom of the world loses vast amounts of ice, those...
