Police are warning about an old scam with a new a very dangerous twist and Wednesday night, a Church Hill woman became a victim.

Nicole Smith got a call that said she owed almost $1,000 to the IRS. When she refused to pay the scammers, they called the police on her.

(snip)

Smith then called her ex-husband to tell him what happened, but the ordeal wasn't over. The same person called back telling her to look out her window.

"There were four police cars outside my window! I was panicked because I couldn't believe, how did he get four police cars to my house? Four!"

Church Hill Police Chief Mark Johnson said the scammers called 911 pretending to be Smith. The scammers used software that made it look like her house phone called the police, and a female voice told police there were men invading her house with AK-47s.

The IRS scammers are upping their dirty tactics to include SWAT-ting their victims, using software to make 911 calls from the victims' home numbers.

A few weeks ago I got a call from a robo scam left a message that the IRS had a lawsuit against me. Yeh right, but when I called them back to rip them a new one all I got was a busy signal the few attempts I made. Go to hell scammers.

How many votes would ANY Presidential Candidate get if he used the NSA data collection and made the “National Do Not Call” list actually WORK?

Just asking!

I got one of those voice mail messages a couple of months ago, also. I've got to admit, it made me pretty nervous. I think did a google search on the call back number they left along with the letters "IRS" - and got multiple links showing it was a scam.

The IRS doesn’t call you.

The police have got to find a way to combat this SWATting. What was described is basically making them unwilling partners in the threat that if the victim doesn't pay the extortion, the crooks will have the victims assaulted or killed.

I play off the messages on my Mom’s phone whenever I visit. One of these “IRS” scams was on it. She’s elderly & lives alone.

Scammers like these deserve to be tracked down to their motel lairs and executed on the spot `while resisting arrest’.

If they want to get deadly, then so be it.

The trouble is the scammers are sitting in some basement in India or Romania or the like. The police technology needs to be improved so that spoofing calls either incoming or outgoing can be readily detected. If the crooks can make it look like the victim is making the calls and that cannot be detected, then there is no end to the damage they can do. The next call could be a fake terroristic threat for instance. Real terrorists could also use the technology to disrupt US security.

"The IRS doesn’t call you."

Correct. My subsequent investigation revealed that the IRS does not call or e-mail.

Well, I guess if tracked down, they could use one of those drones to take em out!

We get about 2 to 4 unsolicited calls a day. I am weery of it. For a while, I used to give the GFY response but that has had little to no affect as the same number calls again. I have a new one now, I listen to the sales pitch and then say gee, I just had that very thing you are selling done here (solar power, insulation check, window replacement etc). After spending time on their pitch, I get gleeful at the sound of the air coming out of their baloon as they feel they just missed.

Now I am very worried about the upcoming elections and the soon to be non stop vote for me calls.

When I had a land line I used to love jacking with the phone scammers.

Air horn in their ear works wonders.

I hope you didn’t inadvertently call a fee-number. Not all fee numbers are 1-900.

The scam can simply be in getting a person to call back, so I never do.

Hopefully the # you called had already been blocked.

Yeh right, but when I called them back to rip them a new one all I got was a busy signal the few attempts I made.

Don't call back scammers or missed phone calls you don't know, or you may be calling a premium service phone number, for example a phone-sex number, and find you have a phone bill for $50, $100 or whatever they can get away with. A common scam is for someone to call your phone and let it ring once or twice and hang up. Most people call the number back, and they get taken to the cleaners. Don't call numbers you don't know.

On another note, if you come back to your car after it was sitting in a parking lot, and you find a small note on your windshield or back window, lock your doors and move to another location before you get out to see what the note is. Most people get out right away and someone will dive into your car and take your belongings. If you had started your car, and then got out to retrieve the note, which is common, a car jacker waiting nearby can then slip in and take your car and belongings.

There's all kinds of set-ups taking place now taking advantage of our good nature or common behavior.

We could be on the verge of civil chaos. Why shouldn’t the scammers (or terrorists) make spoofing software available to anyone, so that the disgruntled liberal neighbor who doesn’t like your Ted Cruz sticker can call in a SWAT raid on your @zz & make the po-po think it was you calling 911.

While he breaks out the popcorn & watches it all go down.

Scary......

“The police have got to find a way to combat this SWATting.”

Yeah, it’s called “the Fourth Amendment”. Worked quite well until the courts eviscerated it at the request of law enforcement.

Yeah, that doesn’t work so well anymore. The police and the surveillance state need to be motivated to solve this. If they don’t care that they kill or maim a certain percentage of innocents, then they won’t look for a solution very hard. If real terrorists start using it against the authorities, then they will find a solution.

There is a free service that works quite well at blocking these kinds of calls automatically if you have a VOIP phone service (does not work with plain old telephone service). It automatically hangs up the robo caller after the first ring.
