By their unanimous verdict, jurors rejected arguments that the aged driver made a mistake and found him guilty on 10 counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence for killing 10 people. He injured 68 others...

Los Angeles -- The elderly man whose car roared through a farmers market in 2003 had multiple opportunities to stop or steer his car away from people and was indifferent after hitting more than 70 people and killing 10, a prosecutor said in closing arguments Thursday. As she showed photos of bloodied and mangled bodies, Ambrose derided the claim by saying "oops." "Those people's lives were not an `oops,'" Ambrose said. "They had a right to walk...

SANTA MONICA -- Apartment building developers sued the city, seeking to overturn an ordinance that requires them to provide affordable housing. The lawsuit, filed Monday, in Superior Court claims the provision violates clauses of the state and federal constitutions, which prohibit the government from taking private property without providing compensation. The ordinance requires developers with four or more residential units to also build some affordable housing sold at below-market prices, according to the Sacramento- based Pacific Legal Foundation. Money that builders lose constructing below-market homes would be passed along in higher prices for new housing that is not price-controlled, said...

Ann Ambrose said witnesses reported that Weller appeared intent and drove his car through the crowded weekly market along Arizona Avenue at speeds in excess of 60 mph. Ambrose said the case is much more than an...

(AP) SANTA MONICA, Calif. A judge has ruled that the city of Santa Monica is not liable for a fatal vehicle accident three years ago in which an elderly motorist plowed into a crowded farmer's market. Federal transportation regulators faulted the city for using inadequate safety precautions and an outdated traffic plan that didn't comply with government guidelines. But a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ruled Monday that the city is...

The movement for academic freedom has been spurred on by students who have seen bias in the classroom or experienced political discrimination, stood up against it and become activists for their cause. A handful of these students were in Washington, D.C. to publicly share their stories at the recent Academic Freedom Conference held by Students for Academic Freedom on April 6-7. Student Mason Harrison, of University of California-Davis, encountered a political rant on the first day of a women’s studies class he’d enrolled in on a wager. “My professor began the class, not by introducing herself, but by chanting: ‘No...
