The city of Santa Monica, Calif., is in trouble with environmentalists for the way they eradicated their squirrel population: An unannounced, weekend fumigation of the animals' burrows under Palisades Park.
City officials had debated the rodent overpopulation issue for more than a year, trying to find a solution which involved neither poison nor pain, reports KCBS-TV's Jennifer Sabih.

People found out Monday that there are no squirrels, because the City of Santa Monica put poison gas into their burrows in the middle of the Sunday night.
Neither enivornmentalists nor squirrels saw the city's move coming.
Even when elected on a Liberal platform liberal/communists continue to amaze me!
..ever since they went hollywood, it hasn't been the same
That's SICK!
They should try this to get rid of the Liberal population, we could refer to it as late term or worthless birth abortion to make it seem like a "friendly" proceedure to those with a liberal mindset
Best way to get rid of squirrels is to bash their brains out between a couple of big rocks.
Totally painless, unless you get your fingers in the way.
Ugh, this seems like a horrible way of handling it. Why didn't they just post signs asking people not to feed them? Lack of extra food would make the population issues work themselves out.
I dunno why this was such a big deal - what were the extra squirrels doing that was such an issue?
And a park without squirrels to me isn't really a park....
Poor little things...

About time the loonies in S.M. got something right. Find the most efficient way to rid yourselves of the pests and DO IT. Better to ask forgiveness than for permission...SSZ
Goes to show you how hypocritical liberals are.
They don't want us to drill in ANWR, to help us go towards energy independence, using the excuse of protecting the caribou ( even though they are very happy near other drilling sites in Alaska), but they have no problem gassing in the middle of the night a bunch of innocent squirrels, who are a joy for the people in the park, and aren't hurting anyone.
I could see drastic action being needed, if there is some disease the squirrels have and spread, then there are some hard choices and their eradication may be necessary.
But this was NOT the case. They just said there are "too many" of them. What's too many? They had food, good climate, so they multiplied.
I remember when I was up in Monte Rey, they have a beatiful park there, now that place really had a lot of squirrels, but I haven't heard anyone contemplating their murder.
How about if someone at Seal Beach would decided that there are too many seals there and they should all be killed?
I wonder if they were actually trying to gas the vagrents that populate the park near the pier.
Photoshop of squirrel in an M17 gas mask in 5...4...3...2...
These were NOT rats in your home, these were wild squirrels in a nature park by the ocean who were NOT pests.
"I wonder if they were actually trying to gas the vagrents that populate the park near the pier."

They put poison pellets down the burrows of the squirrels. But you make a good point. People in the park are indeed seriously disturbed being constantly approached by aggressive vagrants. Those are the REAL pests.
Stalin would be proud.

Squirrels can save mankind.

ROFLMAO!
They can all come to my house. Just bought a new bag of peanuts.
If only the same fate could be bestowed upon Canadian geese.
