EU nations must not refuse Muslim migrants: MerkelThe refusal of some EU countries to accept Muslim refugees is "unacceptable", Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday as Germany called for quotas to divide the influx throughout the bloc. That's not right at all that some countries say: 'generally speaking, we don't want to have Muslims in our countries'," Merkel told German public television channel ARD. Backing the idea of a quota system for taking in migrants, the German leader stressed that "everyone must do their part," and that "a common solution must be found." A common European migration policy is a...

P eople rarely mean the same thing when they say “religion”, nor do they realize that they don’t mean the same thing. For early Jews and Muslims, religion was law. Din means law in Hebrew and religion in Arabic. For early Jews, religion was also tribal; for early Muslims, it was universal[i]. For the Romans, religion was social events, rituals, and festivals –the word religio was a counter to superstitio, and while present in the Roman zeitgeist had no equivalent concept in the Greek-Byzantine East[ii]. Law was procedurally and mechanically its own thing, and early Christianity, thanks to Saint Augustine,...

Does it matter what our kids learn about Islam in public schools? Jenny McKeigue of Olmsted Falls, Ohio thinks so. This small town mother has battled her local school board for about four years to get them to remove parts of the curriculum that seem to promote Islam. In 2012, McKeigue learned that her son had been shown a video in his seventh grade social studies class that she considered to be blatant Muslim propaganda. The video, an episode of the discontinued "30 Days" reality TV series, featured a "regular American" (the host's terminology, not mine) spending thirty days immersing...

With participation in traditional faiths at near-record lows, Britain is seeing the rise of what humanists describe as “pastors” for the non-religious. Last month the University of Westminster in London broke new ground by appointing its first official secular advisor for students. The move followed efforts by the British Humanist Association since 2014 to train more than 100 volunteers to go into schools, hospitals and prisons in order to provide counseling support for those who don’t believe in a deity. Early this year hospitals run by Britain’s National Health Service in Leicester also saw their first humanist appointed to the...

On a visit to Nigeria today, Secretary of State John Kerry declared there are "far too many" who join terrorist groups like Boko Haram "because they have trouble finding meaning or opportunity in their daily lives." "Because they are deeply frustrated and alienated -- and because they hope groups like Boko Haram will somehow give them a sense of identity, or purpose, or power," Kerry said after meeting with local religious leaders to discuss community building and countering violent extremism in Sokoto, Nigeria. ".... When people -- and particularly young people -- have no hope for the future and no...

The number of weddings being performed by the Church of Scotland slipped below the number of humanist ceremonies taking place for the first time last year, latest figures have shown. The decline in church weddings is yet another indication of declining support for the increasingly liberal Kirk. According to figures from the National Records of Scotland 4,290 Humanist wedding ceremonies took place in Scotland in 2015, of which approximately 80 percent (3,378) were conducted by the Humanist Society Scotland (HSS).

Pat Archbold: At what point is it legitimate to take up arms against this illegitimate government? I think that armed resistance might be legitimate as a defensive act if several states secede. Just war theory requires a reasonable chance of success? Without secession of multiple states, can armed defense be legitimate? Alpha Bravo: Well, isn’t that the question du jour? I always snicker at Dennis Miller’s old joke that George Washington started blowing people’s heads off for taxing his breakfast beverage… and it wasn’t even coffee. First, as we discussed earlier, the whole American paradigm was and is deeply, deeply...

It’s Easy to Be an Atheist if You Ignore Science Although the general public is disconcertingly unaware of it, it is a fact that scientists do not have even the slightest clue as to how life could have begun through an unguided naturalistic process absent the intervention of a conscious creative force. Here are just a few well-chosen statements on the Origin of Life: (2016) “[There is] collective cluelessness…those who say this is well worked out, they know nothing, nothing about chemical synthesis…Those who think that scientists understand the details of life’s origin are wholly uninformed. Nobody understands…when will the scientific...
