July 2, 2015  Thursday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time Reading 1 Gn 22:1b-19 God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. Then God said: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a burnt offering on a height that I will point out to you.” Early the next morning Abraham saddled his donkey, took with him his son Isaac, and two of his servants as well, and with the wood that he had cut...

July 1, 2015  Wednesday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time Reading 1 Gn 21:5, 8-20a Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Isaac grew, and on the day of the child’s weaning Abraham held a great feast. Sarah noticed the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham playing with her son Isaac; so she demanded of Abraham: “Drive out that slave and her son! No son of that slave is going to share the inheritance with my son Isaac!” Abraham was greatly distressed, especially on account of his son Ishmael....

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem Character Studies From The Bible Solomon 1 The words of the Teacher,[ son of David, king in Jerusalem: 2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!”     says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless!     Everything is meaningless.” 3 What do people gain from all their labors     at which they toil under the sun? 4 Generations come and generations go,     but the earth remains forever. 5 The sun rises and the sun sets,     and hurries back to where it rises. 6 The wind blows to the south     and turns to the north; round and round it goes,     ever returning on its course. 7 All streams flow into the sea,...

June 30, 2015 Tuesday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time Reading 1 Gn 19:15-29 As dawn was breaking, the angels urged Lot on, saying, “On your way! Take with you your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of Sodom.” When he hesitated, the men, by the LORD’s mercy, seized his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters and led them to safety outside the city. As soon as they had been brought outside, he was told: “Flee for your life! Don’t look back or...

He was one of Solomon’s officials, an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah. 27 Here is the account of how he rebelled against the king: Solomon had built the terraces[a] and had filled in the gap in the wall of the city of David his father. 28 Now Jeroboam was a man of standing, and when Solomon saw how well the young man did his work, he...

From Despair to Deliverance: The Journey of Jairus – A Homily for the 13th Sunday of the Year Msgr. Charles Pope • June 27, 2015 • The gospel today focuses on a man named Jairus and a journey he makes from despair to deliverance, with the help of Jesus. Of course Jairus is not merely a synagogue official who lived two thousand years ago. You are Jairus and his journey is your journey. We also meet in this gospel a woman of great faith, to whom the Lord points as an exemplar. If you are ready to accept it, she also...

June 28, 2015  Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading 1 Wis 1:13-15; 2:23-24 God did not make death, nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living. For he fashioned all things that they might have being; and the creatures of the world are wholesome, and there is not a destructive drug among them nor any domain of the netherworld on earth, for justice is undying. For God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him. But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who belong to his...

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem Character Studies From The Bible Solomon New International Version (NIV) 11 King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. 2 They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. 3 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. 4 As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his...

Looking up, he saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them; and bowing to the ground, he said: “Sir, if I may ask you this favor, please do not go on past your servant. Calling all Christians to unite together in prayer tonight at 11:00 EST. We know the effectiveness of prayer (James 5:13-18). After our Lord had ascended the church had gathered in the upper room. Acts 1:14 tells us "these all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer...." We may recall when Peter was in jail the church was praying fervently to God for him. The Lord sent an angel to free Peter (Acts 12:1-7). I can think of no other course of action for the followers of Christ than to cry out to Him at this time.
