Sheriff's investigators at the scene of the Oakland fire on Saturday. At least nine people are confirmed dead and several dozen are missing after a fire ripped through the the "Ghost Ship" warehouse in Oakland... As many as 100 people were crowded inside the warehouse for a party when the blaze erupted. They struggled to escape the flames and smoke. Officials fear dozens could have been killed. City records show that there were habitability complaints made against the property's owner as recently as November 14 regarding an "illegal interior building structure." City inspectors appear to have visited the building on...

Donald Trump‘s plans for Saturday night are all about a decadent costume party being held in Long Island by donors who supported his presidential campaign. The party has a “Villains and Heroes” theme, and it is being hosted by the family of hedge fund magnate Robert Mercer. Politico noted that Mercer gave a $2 million donation to a pro-Trump super PAC during the election, and his daughter Rebekah Mercer has ties to Trump’s transition team and three of his biggest staffers: Kellyanne Conway, Steve Bannon, and David Bossie. “It will be the hottest ticket in town,” Conway said to Bloomberg....

WASHINGTON, United States — Former Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein dropped her efforts Saturday to request a vote recount in Pennsylvania, one of three battleground states won by Donald Trump where she is challenging the results. “Petitioners are regular citizens of ordinary means. They cannot afford to post the $1,000,000 bond required by the court,” read a filing submitted in the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania. On Twitter, she later added: “#Recount2016 is so expensive because of elected leaders who have refused to invest in a 21st-century voting system.”

On Monday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria,” Representative Tim Ryan (D-OH), who is challenging House Minority Leader Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), stated, “I’m pulling the fire alarm, because the house is burning down, and we better get our act together or we’re going to cease being a national party.” Ryan said, “[T]he average American, the average working-class American, flipped their middle finger to the establishment, the Democratic establishment, the Republican establishment, Wall Street. They think that everybody’s more concerned with the donor class than they the working class.” He added, “[W]e can’t keep going down the...

Following president-elect Donald J. Trump’s historic victory, Paul Ryan seemed eager to heap praise upon the next Republican President and his “enormous political feat.†“What Donald Trump just pulled off is an enormous political feat. It’s an enormous feat in that he heard those voices that were out there that other people weren’t hearing. And he just earned a mandate. And we now just have a unified Republican government,†Ryan told reporters on Wednesday. “If you listened to us in the closing days of this campaign, whether it was crisscrossing America or crisscrossing Wisconsin, we were making an appeal...

Hey, why not sponsor one helluva pre-vote party get together for friends (and their friends, and friends of friends etc.)? No Booze (till after the vote, anyway). Don't forget name labels and if people kick in a buck or two, they get co-sponsor labels. The Hillary forces have a crushing ground game - a powerful voter "pulling operation" to get out their vote. Right now, the Dems are way ahead in this says The US News & World Report (The-Report, "Fight On the Ground", Oct. 14 2016 by Susan Milligan") The DNC & the unions are joining left-wing groups of...

I’ve been trying to figure out what common trait binds Clinton supporters together. As far as I can tell, the most unifying characteristic is a willingness to bully in all its forms. If you have a Trump sign in your lawn, they will steal it. If you have a Trump bumper sticker, they will deface your car. On social media, almost every message I get from a Clinton supporter is a bullying type of message. They insult. They try to shame. They label. And obviously they threaten my livelihood. If you speak of Trump at work you could get fired....

Philanthropist and banker turned musician Ivan Wilzig had a surprise guest at his naked $1million 60th birthday party in the Hamptons - a drone. The security team at Wilzig's 10-acre Water Mill estate, dubbed the Playboy Mansion of the Hamptons, used the flying device to make sure the 700 partygoers behaved themselves and to prevent gatecrashers at the Garden of Eden themed bash on Saturday where clothing was optional. Partygoers were handed fig leaves as they entered the celebrations and many followed the undress code, the New York Daily News' gossip column Confidential reported. Posting to Facebook today, Wilzig, who...

The California Democratic Party added about 700,000 voters between January and July of this year, a 10 percent increase that is significantly higher than the rise in registered Democrats during previous presidential elections, according to new data from the California Secretary of State.

Dozens of Bernie Sanders delegates walked out of their Democratic National Convention and many promised to leave the political party in protest. Vincent Venditti, a George delegate pledged to Sanders, said outside the Wells Fargo Center that he considers himself an independent effectively immediately. Mamaw encouraged me to get a job—she told me that it would be good for me and that I needed to learn the value of a dollar. When her encouragement fell on deaf ears, she then demanded that I get a job, and so I did, as a cashier at Dillman’s, a local grocery store. Working as a cashier turned me into an amateur sociologist. A frenetic stress animated so many of our customers. One of our neighbors would walk in and yell at me for the smallest of transgressions—not smiling at her, or bagging the groceries too heavy one...

My office is holding its annual Summer Barbecue in a couple of weeks. Calling it a 'barbecue' is a bit extravagant, as all we do is cook hot dogs and hamburgers on a propane grill ;-) and the stars of the show are usually the wonderful side dishes that folks from many different ethnic cuisines bring to the party. This year it will be a much smaller affair, with our 'grill master' out on knee-replacement surgery, other staff leaving for new jobs, and lots of folks away for Summer. But I have to come up with a side dish! I...

While interviewing Bernie Sanders on "Meet The Press" on October 11, 2015 Chuck Todd asked the following question: “Are you a capitalist?” Bernie answered “No. I’m a democratic socialist.” To properly understand his answer, it is helpful to go back 104 years to the candidacy of Eugene V. Debs who, in 1912, ran for president on the Socialist Party ticket. In that election, there were four candidates for President: William Howard Taft (Republican), Theodore Roosevelt (Progressive), Woodrow Wilson (Democrat), and Eugene V. Debs (Socialist). On some of the platform planks, there was an overlap between the Socialists and the Progressives....

Donald Trump might have written The Art of the Deal, but the title he should peruse today is Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. His more vocal supporters, and by that I mean those who act out on the internet precisely as Donald does on the stump, should pick up a copy as well. Both the candidate and his hard-core supporters have missed the idea that it is the job of the winner to unite a party. Oddly the Trumpists defend their offensive and insulting demeanor by saying that neither John McCain nor Mitt Romney reached out...

A Lexington woman is sentenced to 20 years in prison after a 15-year-old boy dies of alcohol poisoning at a party at her home. 15-year-old Nicholas Faught died at the party allegedly hosted by Tonya Moss and Justin Moore in March of 2015. At the sentencing, the victim's mother gave her testimony, the whole time choking back tears and looking straight at Moss saying she will never understand what her family is going through. The defendant also gave her testimony, claiming she did not know about the party and thought her son was only having a bonfire with a few...

In a February post titled, It’s Not Just the GOP – The Democratic Party is Also Imploding, I noted the following: Yes, of course, Trump winning the GOP nomination marks the end of the party as we know it. After all, some neocons are already publicly and actively throwing their support behind Hillary. While this undoubtably represents a major turning point in U.S. political history, many pundits have yet to appreciate that the exact same thing is happening within the Democratic Party. It’s just not completely obvious yet. While it might sound strange, a coronation of Hillary Clinton in the...

Famous people and people just famous-for-Washington scored coveted invitations to Friday night’s White House state dinner honoring the leaders of Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Denmark and Norway. Will Ferrell, who famously parodied past President George W. Bush on “Saturday Night Live,” and Bellamy Young, first lady on the TV show “Scandal,” made the cut, as did recently retired late-night host David Letterman, “Girls” actress Allison Williams and actor-comedian Aziz Ansari.

Businessman and Republican activist Carl Paladino in a radio interview Monday said Donald Trump “absolutely” should launch an independent bid for president if he is denied the Republican nomination at the July convention in Cleveland. “Absolutely,” Paladino said in an interview with WCNY’s The Capitol Pressroom. “If cheated, you fight back. That would be the end of the Republican Party, by the way.” Paladino, a Buffalo real-estate developer and prominent Trump supporter in New York, was the GOP nominee for governor in 2010. In the interview, Paladino blasted what so far has been a whisper campaign to potentially nominate House...

A survey has found that tens of thousands of voters, including Demi Moore and other celebrities, have mistakenly registered as members of a conservative minor political party in California in a mix-up over its name, a newspaper reported Sunday. The Los Angeles Times (http://bit.ly/23G88sX ) said that a telephone survey of 500 members of the American Independent Party found nearly 3 of 4 people did not realize they had enrolled in a political party that opposes abortion rights and same sex marriage and calls for building a fence along the U.S. border. The newspaper said voters were confused by the...

The conventional wisdom is that Donald Trump will win the New York primary with well over 50 percent and win nearly all of the Empire State’s 95 delegates this upcoming Tuesday. While this is certainly a possibility, there is also a chance, and not a far-fetched one that Trump will finish with under 50 percent of the vote. If that happens, it will signal a seismic shift in the race for the Republican nomination. A look at recent polling makes it seem almost certain that Trump will finish with over 50 percent of the vote. The current New York Real...
