Thousands of voters, celebrities, register to wrong party

A survey has found that tens of thousands of voters, including Demi Moore and other celebrities, have mistakenly registered as members of a conservative minor political party in California in a mix-up over its name, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The Los Angeles Times (http://bit.ly/23G88sX ) said that a telephone survey of 500 members of the American Independent Party found nearly 3 of 4 people did not realize they had enrolled in a political party that opposes abortion rights and same sex marriage and calls for building a fence along the U.S. border.

The newspaper said voters were confused by the use of the word "independent" in the party's name. In California, voters who do not want to register with any party must check a box on a registration form for "no party preference."

"I just blew it," Deborah Silva, 64, of Point Arena in Mendocino County, told the Times. "There were a number of choices. I just checked the box that said 'independent.'"

Yet another example of how the election is rigged. Undoubtedly this faux party was set up by that globalist double-agent Cruz the Canadian to strip people of their right to vote for Mr. Trump.

What a PerverTED political system...

I am a Trump supporter. You need to know that in California, only registered Republicans can vote for candidates running on the Republican ticket for NATIONAL office. So, no voter who is registered as an Independent can vote for either Trump or Cruz.

Several years ago, California passed an open primary law in which all candidates running for local and statewide positions would be listed on one primary ballot. The top two vote getters regardless of party would then run in the general election, even if they were from the same party. This is a horrible system but was upheld by the courts in CA. The only exception is for national offices as the state has no control over them.

The American Independent Party (AIP) is a far right political party of the United States that was established in 1967 by Bill Shearer and his wife, Eileen Knowland Shearer, a cousin of the late Republican U. S. Senator William F. Knowland of California.

Why are whining before looking for facts. The party was crated before Cruz was born. If Trump loses California it will because he didn’t bother to learn California election code written be he ever thought about running for president.

meh

One could have simply pointed out that some folks are stupid. California doesn’t have an open primary you have to be registered in the party you plan on voting for in the primary

Conservatives used to pride themselves on being well-informed.

I guess that's not the case any more Mr. O'Malley.

If that's your real name, you're a disgrace to the Irish as well.

Millions in CA have been totally disenfranchised by epic government corruption not to mention government undermined and compromised the vote by turning CA into flophouse for millions who entered illegally.

I understand they ran out of registration forms for those registering for the Republican party. They’ve had to print more...

I can’t imagine why...lol

ha!
well, when registering new voters it would, of course, be totally improper to trick or mislead them into joining any political party other than the one they want

i quit going out on registration drives when we discovered we were signing up far more new voters for the other major party than for our own

For promised joy!)” .... Robert Burns (To a Mouse, 1785)

Demi Moore, et al signed up for the party that in the past has famously fielded George Wallace and Lester Maddox for President. Hilarious!

Trump is against abortion. Your information should say that Hillary is the abortionist.

I am a member of the American Independent Party in California. It has been around for a very long time. It has absolutely nothing to do with Cruz or dirty tricks.

I even read the article in the LA Times. It was the only good news to be had. Knowing that a bunch of low-information liberals are accidentally signing up with a true, rightwing, patriotic party is hilarious.

The current party leader thought about changing the name a while ago, but decided not to because he didn't want to have to go through the expense of getting a sufficient number of members in order to retain ballot access for the party. He's honest enough with himself to know that there aren't a lot of Californians left that agree with the Constitution.

The really stupid thing about O'Malley's comment is that the AIP was actually trying to put Trump up as their candidate but the Sec of State wouldn't allow it. So AIP is actually on Trump's side rather than Cruz's side. If O'Malley spent even five minutes investigating he would have found this out and would be hailing the AIP as his friends.

In re-reading your comments #9 and 18, I now realize you were responding to comment #1, not the story itself.
And in comment #1, markomalley apparently forgot to affix his /s tag.
My apologies for jumping on you, wwfb.
Mark, no /s tag? Tsk tsk!
