On 25th February 2014 Sun produced X4.9 flare which on 27th February caused G2 (KP 6) geomagnetic storm on Earth. It was the brightest aurora display so far during this solar maximum which I could witness with auroral displays overhead in the far north of Scotland. This short movie illustrates what has been seen from latitude 58.3 degrees north. Here is a link to the music used, as many of you asked about it http://www.pond5.com/stock-music/1070...

Known for its paddle-shaped tail and friendly, toothy face, the beaver is a living, gnawing symbol of Canada's industrious spirit. But don't be fooled by the cute and furry appearance. The big rodents can be dam ferocious. Beaver attacks are on the rise in Edmonton. In the past month, several people have reported that their dogs have been attacked at the Terwillegar off-leash park. Some pets have suffered serious injuries, and people are being encouraged to keep their dogs out of the water.

CHICAGO, IL -- An adult live Asian carp was caught about 9 miles from Lake Michigan this week, far north of the leading edge of the invasive fish population in the Illinois River and upstream of an electric barrier designed to keep them from the Great Lakes. Illinois Department of Natural Resources Asian carp biologist Kevin Irons said the 8-pound, 22-inch silver carp was caught by commercial fishermen in a regular carp monitoring spot on the Little Calumet River about two miles below the T. J. O'Brien Lock and Dam. It's the second time an adult Asian carp has been...

Nearly 50 flights by American Airlines were canceled, impacting thousands of passengers when temperatures at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport approached 120 degrees. While thousands of airline passengers were being inconvenienced by weather as happens to tens of thousands of flights...

MB>Cephalopods really are the masters of misdirection. Kohei Okamoto was caught off guard the first time he saw what appeared to be a cuttlefish doing a hermit crab impersonation. Okamoto, a researcher at the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan, was moving 48 lab-raised pharaoh cuttlefish into a large, circular tank to study cuttlefish hunting techniques when three of the animals started flapping their arms intensely—a behavior not displayed when they were living in smaller holding tanks. The flapping was unrelated to Okamoto’s ongoing project, but it stuck in his mind. So after his planned work was done, Okamoto...

A kayaking guide and a group of tourists witnessed an incredible life-and-death fight between a massive fur seal and a giant octopus in New Zealand earlier this week. The epic confrontation took place at South Bay, on New Zealand’s South Island, on June 20, the New Zealand Herald reports. Conner Stapley, a guide with Kaikoura Kayaks, saw thrashing on the surface of the water and soon realized the large male seal was attacking the octopus. Stapley and the three tourists he was accompanying got front-row seats to the gruesome battle, which was won by the hungry seal.

  • Don't get too close to the buffalo!

This could have been me, but I don't think it would have been my fault as I wouldn't have wanted to come this close. I was at Elk Island park, in Alberta, and I went around a bend on a trail and came over a hill and the bison was unexpected close enough that I could have petted the thing. I got out very quick. It also moved off the path a couple hundred yards away, once I was out of sight. I was very lucky that day.

Fish heads thrown by birds into his boat made him survive the sea for more than two months. He said he even reached Indonesia. “They just passed...

Trump’s Interior Department Secretary, Montana rancher and former Navy Seal Ryan Zinke, is proving to be more than just a dramatic contrast to Obama’s Interior chief, liberal Democrat recreation industry exec., Sally Jewell. Zinke’s getting to work unraveling her legacy–and that of previous progressive predecessors–in short order. Beyond the Obama monument land grabs, which are currently under review as ordered by President Trump, with significant reductions and reversals in the works, Zinke is breaking up the bureaucratic status quo in his department’s upper echelons. On June 16, Greenwire reported: Dozens of Senior Executive Service employees — career officials within the...

Organisers advised ticket-holders to "pack light" for this year's event in light of extra searches before people were let onto the site. Punters were forced to join queues half a mile long within an hour of the gates opening at 7am on Wednesday – an hour earlier than planned – with reports from seasoned attendees saying they had "never seen" queues like it.
