State says four inches of clear ice is needed before stepping onto the iceThe New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is reminding ice anglers to use caution and common sense when ice fishing across much of New York State. Four inches or more of solid ice is considered to be safe for anglers accessing ice on foot. Ice anglers should note that ice thickness can vary on every body of water and even on the same body of water. "Ice fishing is a popular sport in New York and interest in it increases every year," said DEC Commissioner...

As I sit here looking out over the back yard, I see at least 40 robins that are migrating north en masse. I suppose they are telling us something. It seems that the winter of 2017 will never happen. The robins are moving north in January to get an early start on spring. Down the street on severely sloping ground, a neighbor years ago planted some crocus bulbs. The plant found it's desired habitat and has spread all over. There are hundreds and hundreds of the pale lavender flowers now. They began to bloom early last week and are now...

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) – A federal judge said Friday he will likely order the federal government to reallocate water, some earmarked for commercial interests, to stave off a salmon die-off on the California-Oregon border. Two Native American tribes sued the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation last year, claiming its bungled management of Klamath River waterways allowed a deadly parasite to infect 91 percent of endangered juvenile Coho and Chinook salmon.

A mysterious UFO-shaped cloud baffled skiers when it appeared in the sky over Sweden. The bizarre cloud floated in the sky over ski resorts Åre and Duved on Thursday, prompting some to speculate that Martians had arrived for a day on the slopes. Many rushed to take pictures of the unusual phenomenon and posted them on social media. "I thought it was pretty cool," one of them, Elvira Kuper, told broadcaster SVT. Experts explained it was a so-called lenticular cloud, which forms over mountain peaks when the air is forced to rise as it hits the hillside. As it cools...

The tribesmen have removed 13 pythons in just over a week, including a 16-foot-long femaleFlorida wildlife officials have recruited tribesmen from India in the state's ongoing hunt for Burmese pythons. Irula tribesmen are well-known in southern India for their snake-catching. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission hopes they'll reveal something that has long eluded researchers: a reliable way to track and spot the tan, splotchy snakes that all but disappear in the Everglades. One of the commission's exotic species experts, Kristen Sommers, said in a statement Monday that the state hopes the tribesmen can teach people in Florida some...

The search for a missing kayaker who capsized on Tuesday near the Dumbarton Bridge has been temporarily called off because of low tide, according to officials. A U.S. Coast Guard cutter ship and various small boats from local fire departments on Wednesday afternoon were pulled from the water. No trace of Kenneth Maldanado, a 30-something from San Jose who fell into the water without wearing a life jacket, has been found. "Completely due to the favorable conditions and with no wind, high tide, we were able to cover a grid as best we could of the entire South Bay," said...

Ocker serves as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, and had been stationed at Fort Sill, which is located in Oklahoma. On November 12, after getting an opportunity to hunt for 5 straight days, Ocker arrowed the biggest non-typical buck taken by an Oklahoma bowhunter, and the second biggest non-typical ever taken in the state, according to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s Cy Curtis Awards Program. Ocker’s 28-point buck was officially measured last week by Boone & Crockett scorer George...

  • Waves Tear Off Stern From SS Palo Alto, aka, 'The Concrete Ship,' in Santa Cruz County

The most famous concrete ship on the West Coast suffered yet another casualty of the explosive surf over the weekend thanks to brutal storms and record waves. The stern of the SS Palo Alto was eaten by the ocean on Saturday off Seacliff State Beach, located east of Santa Cruz in Capitola, on Park Avenue off of Highway 1. While the ship is still there, it's now impossible to walk from the end of the pier to the tip of the ship. "It's an icon," Aptos resident Chris White told NBC Bay Area on Monday. He grabbed his camera and...

Post-presidential visits to the desert are nothing new. Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon and Ford all came to the Coachella Valley after their time in office. President Obama though will make history Friday when he becomes the first president to head straight for the desert the moment he becomes a private citizen. After all, they don't call the Coachella Valley "the playground of presidents" for no reasons.

Later today, six people will enter a dome on a volcano in Hawaii that will be their home for the next eight months, as they simulate a future mission to Mars. It is the fifth such experiment run by the University of Hawaii and funded by NASA. The latest mission on Mauna Loa, which ended in August 2016, lasted a full year. It is known as the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, or HI-SEAS. Global warming is going to steal away some of those postcard-perfect weather days in the future, according to a first-of-its-kind projection of nice weather. On average, Earth will have 10 fewer days of mild and mostly dry weather by the end of the century, the researchers estimate. Some places will get more days perfect for picnics or outdoor weddings, while other places will lose a lot. Rio de Janeiro, Miami and much of Africa are big losers, while Europe and Seattle will gain nicer weather. “It’s the type of weather where you can go outside and do something fun,” said...

  • Finch Frozen to Fence Rescue

While feeding my horses on New Year's morning I noticed a solitary finch perched upon the steel fence near the water tank. The tank is heated to keep it from freezing. It is not uncommon for birds to drink from the heated tank. Apparently this unfortunate bird had gotten its feet wet and, while making its exit, had become frozen to the fence in the prevailing near zero Idaho temperatures.
