A woman and her daughter are facing incest charges after authorities learned the pair were legally married in Oklahoma this year, and that the mother had married her son a few years earlier. The motivation behind the March marriage was unclear Wednesday, when 43-year-old Patricia Ann Spann and her daughter, 25-year-old Misty Velvet Dawn Spann, made initial appearances in Stephens County district court. Under Oklahoma law, marrying a close relative is considered incest whether or not a sexual relationship exists. …

Half of John Higdon's broken home is barely standing while the other half is a crumbled mess. Police say Higdon had been arguing with his neighbor for the past few days. His brother said it all started when Higdon believed a group of men tried to break into his home, so he fired some shots into the woods - in the same direction as his neighbor's home. "This man over here decides to come 2 o'clock in the morning, comes over at 2 o'clock in the morning with a dozer, a tractor, and starts pushing the house down," Sammy Higdon...

An Oklahoma magazine is stirring up controversy. Inside Friday’s Daily Ardmoreite edition was this season’s Southern Oklahoma Living magazine. When Gene Autry’s mayor, Kyle Lawson, saw the cover his jaw nearly dropped. “My first initial reaction was I almost spit my coffee out when I first saw it,” Lawson said. On the cover is a baby in a costume supposed to resemble the tin man. “Just the way that the hood kind of goes up and the handle for the tin man`s hat is kind of hidden behind the 'I',” Lawson said. “And just the way the flap comes down...

Barrett Dahl, an autistic Native American from Oklahoma, was visiting Washington, D.C., in October of last year on a school trip. Being in Washington inspired Dahl to wear a sweater featuring the logo of the Washington Redskins. Mr. Dahl says he wore the sweater because it gave him a sense of cultural pride. Not surprisingly, not everyone sees it quite that way -- including a White House advisor named William Mendoza, who confronted Dahl at a Pow Wow, called him a "weetard," spit on him, and then savagely beat him. ====================================== Newsnine.com:Mendoza is the Executive Director of the White House...

On Wednesday, a judge refused to accept a guilty plea from a man accused of beheading a co-worker in 2014. Judge Lori Walkley listened to testimony all day last Friday, as psychologists on both sides argued over Alton Nolen's mental competency. Wednesday, Walkley announced her decision not to accept Nolen's guilty plea. She worried accepting it would not survive an appeal. "I've given it a great deal of thought and a great deal of prayer," Walkley told the courtroom Wednesday. "Because, I thought I could use divine intervention." She said she did not want the victims and their families to...

I'm a 54 year old draftsman. I've been unemployed since March 2nd. I've been to 31 job interviews after applying to over 60 companies. No one wants to hire a 54 year-old man who is confined to a wheel chair. When I was laid off from my job of over 22 years, I finally bit the bullet and filed for disability. I was approved, but I won't start receiving payments until October 26th. My rent on this place is due on Sept. 8th but my last unemployment check won't cover it. My wife and I are both disabled and out...

Those are some of the ways citizens have chosen to show their support and appreciation for area law enforcement in the weeks since a sniper murdered five police officers in Dallas in the wake of the fatal officer-involved shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota. “You get to where you feel like you’re kind of on an island, and you’re all by yourself, and so the support from the community is fantastic because we’re in this together,” said Capt. On Tuesday, the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) formally announced the removal of the lesser prairie chicken from the endangered species protection list. They did not take this step voluntarily; FWS lost a court case last year which ordered the agency to remove the bird from the list. However, even as they complied with the court’s order, the FWS issued a threat that the agency’s land grab under the guise of conservation was not over. In the words of Director Dan Ashe, “Responding to this court ruling by removing the bird from the Federal List does not mean we are...
