The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association is calling for a nationwide boycott of the advertisers of the suburban New York newspaper that published online maps revealing names and addresses of people with pistol permits. **SNIP** The group is encouraging “concerned citizens” to contact national and local advertisers who use the Journal News — including Best Buy, CVS, IKEA and Target, among others — and tell them to stop running ads until the list of lower Hudson Valley pistol license holders is off the Web.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A suburban New York newspaper that sparked an uproar among gun enthusiasts by publishing names and addresses of residents holding pistol permits is now planning to publish even more identities of permit-toting locals. Further names and addresses will be added as they become available to a map originally published on December 24 in the White Plains, New York-based Journal News, the newspaper said. The original map listed thousands of pistol permit holders in suburban Westchester and Rockland counties just north of New York City. Along with an article entitled "The gun owner next door: What you...

A suburban New York City newspaper published an interactive map showing the addresses of thousands of local residents with handgun permits and has drawn flak from gun owners, some of whom expressed their anger via the newspaper's Facebook page. The Monday article in The Journal News was headlined "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood," and was in response to the Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, Conn. "Do you fools realize that you also made a map for criminals to use to find homes to rob that have no guns in...

NEW YORK MILLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Abraham Dickan, 79, of Utica, was angry with the employees at AT&T in New York Mills - anger that he had shown them many times before, but never in the way he did on Thursday, May 27. Shortly before 1 p.m. on that Thursday afternoon, Dickan walked into the cellular phone store on Commercial Drive, with a .357 magnum in his hand, and a list in his pocket containing the six names of the AT&T store employees to which he was holding such deep anger, and planned to kill as a result. A veteran Democratic lawmaker believes the nation will go along with stronger gun control laws if President Obama “exploits” the Newtown, Conn., tragedy and nudges Congress to action. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, who represents portions of New York City, said he was encouraged by Mr. Obama’s statement on Friday afternoon that the mass shooting, which claimed the lives of 20 young children, requires “meaningful action” by Congress, but hopes those words turn into concrete legislation.

As the din of America’s falling headfirst over the fiscal cliff reverberates across the nation, the Obama administration is quietly killing a key economic metric that tells how, and how many, people are voting with their feet. Since 1991 the Internal Revenue Service has been compiling statistics on filers’ addresses, which the agency’s Statistics of Income division uses to show who is moving into and out of every county and state in the nation. As you’d expect, the IRS also knows the aggregate income levels of those who move. So the movements of the most fundamental productive components of the...

Nechemya Weberman, an unlicensed counselor accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in his care, testified Wednesday that he ripped off a charity he founded ostensibly to help poor Brooklynites. “You used this not-for-profit for personal gain?” asked a Brooklyn prosecutor. “Yes I did,” Weberman replied, admitting that he spent donations meant for his group, B’Lev V’Nefesh, on tuition for his kids’ yeshiva — and that its cash was also spent at stores like BMG Corset & Lingerie. Creepy, sure. But par for the course in New York, where politicians routinely turn nonprofits into personal piggy banks. For example:

On the very day that Apple announced it will begin building more computers in the United States, a who’s who of the business world called for a major push to educate the next generation of technology workers. Speaking at a forum sponsored by the Daily News and U.S. News & World Report, IBM Vice President Stanley Litow projected that the so-called STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and math — will spawn 14 million new jobs in the near future. But Google Chairman Eric Schmidt warned that the American education system will need a “massive overhaul” for America’s young people...

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. at a subway station at 49th Street and 7th Avenue, just blocks off Times Square. A surveillance image of the man wanted for allegedly pushing a man in front of a subway train in Midtown, killing him. (Credit:...

New York energy regulators told power companies in New York City to develop plans to keep the lights on in the Big Apple in case the giant Indian Point nuclear power plant, which supplies about a quarter of the city's electricity, is forced to shut down. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo wants the two reactors at Indian Point shut when their operating licenses expire in 2013 and 2015 in part because the nuclear plant is located in the New York metropolitan area, home to some 19 million people. The governor has said even the most unlikely possibility of an accident...
