NY Newspaper Draws Flak for Putting Gun Owners Addresses on Map

A suburban New York City newspaper published an interactive map showing the addresses of thousands of local residents with handgun permits and has drawn flak from gun owners, some of whom expressed their anger via the newspaper's Facebook page.

The Monday article in The Journal News was headlined "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood," and was in response to the Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

"Do you fools realize that you also made a map for criminals to use to find homes to rob that have no guns in them to protect themselves? What a bunch of liberal boobs you all are," wrote one reader.

The sentiments were echoed by another, who wrote, "How dare you guys. You have just destroyed the privacy of these law-abiding citizens and by releasing this list, you have equated them to that of sex offenders and murders. These are law-abiding gun owners, they are no danger to anyone except for criminals. And with this information you have made them targets for both criminals and anti-gun lobbyist who I am sure are going to treat them like monsters. I hope you are sued for infringing on the privacy rights of every single one of these citizens you have just put in harm's way."

One reader, in an attempt to "turn the tables on the Journal and see how they like it," posted the home addresses of the newspaper's president, top editors, and the reporter who wrote the story.

The gun registration information, which is available to the public, was obtained by The Journal News through a through a Freedom of Information Act request.

I hope that is just the way the criminals use the information.

Really make some waves if someone could write an app that would put little arrows on Google or Apple Maps pointing from or I guess towards “Gun Free Zones” especially if the arrows all pointed at New York Libs.

Don’t know how to write apps, don’t know how hard it would be. If nothing else a Map of the New York Libs homes with “Gun Free” arrows pointing at their homes from the homes that are armed.

Just a random thought.

Well, there ya go, folks!

WHY is information, that was believed to be private, secure, could not be tampered with, as the gun permit applicant thought, put on public record? How much of that information can be culled from the FBI background check, associated with that permitee’s application?

Now, with the help of that newspaper, every American knows how easily their own information, can be had, by ANYONE, filing FOIA writ, whether it is a newspaper, a blogger, or your neighbor!

Once again, “the need for the public to know this” trumps an individual’s Rights, under the 4th, 5th, 9th Amendments, under the Bill of Rights.

Me too. And when it happens, I hope the survivors sue the ever loving shit outta this newspaper. Once the newspaper has been dissolved, go individually after all that participated in this bullshit idea to “go to print”.

Sell maps to the homes of the newpaper publisher, all its editors, and the reporter, with photos of their faces, cars/license plates, and homes.

Two can play at this game. Then sue the bastards for “reckless endangerment”.

Lawyers, the line forms at the right.

"Fools" is right. I wanted to say "Morons," but that is an insult to the mentally retarded.

Now the private info of the newspaper folk is all over the internet:

http://christopherfountain.wordpress.com/2012/12/24/sauce-for-the-goose/

Media hacks who are doing their government masters bidding from the state of NY where the governor is running his mouth about confiscation, here in this shenanigan to demonize gun permit holders (who shouldn’t even need a permit). What’s the journalistic ethos behind this?

Media hacks old dinosaurs used to dominating all facets of information and public dissemination. Fools. Now they’re experiencing the full wrath of internet power with coming harassement and disruption. The internet powerhouse intel apparatus, that is open source intel, is freaking insane and these so called enlightened informed “we get to tell you the news” elites are stupid enough to underestimate it.

Benghazi: Press doesn’t care.
Obama Cronies getting huge payouts: Press doesn’t care.
US equipping Islamic Terrorists: Press doesn’t care.
Missing Bailout Money: Press doesn’t care.

Gun Owners doing nothing wrong: press reports everything about these people and their shifty, shadowy workings.

Welcome to Obamaland. :)

LOVE IT!

thanks. Gee I like maps and directions and phone numbers.

For those who would print my address etc. if I owned a gun, I would be suing yesterday but I would also be armed with something that hurts a lot (there are other weapons you can use to defend your home. It is also nice to have a son who is a police officer, who has a K-9 with big teeth. Daughter ran a shooting range/gun store. She’s packing a big hurt).

I actually carried an AR-15 in Cambodia, solely to keep it from shooting off my foot when my friend was driving a Governor’s jeep during a visit out in the boonies there. (we journalists could only shoot with our pens and our mouths - boom, boom, boom. AR 15, A big rifle, too big for my taste but what did I know. Now that M-79 I had to put my foot on to keep it from blowing up the jeep looked interesting.

Just jawin’. In my neighborhood, nobody talks about guns. They just keep them ready. The libs on our block have no idea except for seeing my son in his uniform carrying one big assed shotgun one day. We’ve had no trouble in our hood in years. Wonder why?

Let’s see how this story plays out. I want to hear the screams of the lib journalists on this turnabout play. Locksmiths are going to make some serious money from them.

Good. Now that the gun owners have been made public, we know exactly who has been providing UNCOMPENSATED security for all the non-gun owning people. Impose a $100 per month on all non-gun owning residences so that they pay their “fair share” and do it “for the children”. Let the gun grabbers scream.
