The New Jersey Health Department has issued a mandatory quarantine order for Dr. Nancy Snyderman and the other members of an NBC crew who were exposed to a cameraman with Ebola. The mandatory order was issued after a voluntary 21-day isolation agreement was violated. A spokeswoman for the state health department told the The Associated Press that Snyderman and her crew remains symptom-free and that there is no reason for concern of exposure to the deadly virus to the community. Citing privacy concerns, the spokeswoman would not give further details, including who violated the agreement and how the state learned...

Newly instituted screening procedures at New York's JFK International Airport identified 91 arriving passengers as having a higher risk of being infected with Ebola based on their recent travel, CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden said Monday. None of the airline passengers had a fever, Frieden said, noting that of five people who were sent for further evaluation, none were determined to have Ebola.
  • Two Upper West Side artists who think NYC women should give the hijab a try

The hijab is hot! That’s the message two Upper West Side artists want to spread by encouraging women around the city to put on the veil and snap a selfie. “Women who wear a hijab by choice are in complete control of their sexuality,” says Saks Afridi, who started the #DamnILookGood campaign with project partner Qinza Najm. “Here in New York, it’s very brave for a woman to wear one out in public.” The artists use the term “hijab” to refer to the dress code of modesty for Muslim women. The actual face covering they use in the project is...

If he’s serious, the Republicans of New Hampshire and elsewhere are in for an interesting time. George Pataki is heading north from New York, where he retired as an undefeated three-term Republican Governor in 2006. Do not underestimate him. There’s a sort of aw-shucks persona he puts out there. He’s smart. He’s not encumbered by previous entanglements with the nutty Republican infrastructure. He beat a Democratic liberal icon, Mario Cuomo. He is/is not conservative enough. The big money boys like him. I worked with him and against him for 12 years. He’s got genuine human qualities that are admirable. He’s...
  • Bronx in uproar after de Blasio skips Columbus Day parade

Mayor de Blasio skipped a Columbus Day parade in The Bronx at his own peril Sunday, as residents chided him for showing off his ethnic pride only when it suits his political ends — and not marching this year to hide from the recent controversy over one of his top aides. “He’s Italian when he feels like it! This is the second largest Columbus parade in the city!” said parade-goer Joe Carfora of Hizzoner’s failure to attend the celebration along Morris Park Avenue in the northeastern part of The Bronx. “When Bloomberg was mayor, he would show up every year....

...for being short on cash: NYPD sources The Brooklyn tenant accused of butchering his landlord nearly chopped the man’s head off in a fit of rage because he felt the 57-year-old victim had “teased" him for being poor, police sources said on Wednesday. Hours after the NYPD pulled off a nick-of-time arrest as Mohammed Siddiquee tried to flee the country, the suspect admitted to perpetrating the vicious killing of Mahuddin Mahmud. “Yes, I did it,” Mohammed Siddiquee, 27, said nervously when the Daily News asked if he was the culprit as cops hauled him out of a Brooklyn police station...

In New York City – as with so many other places around the country – it’s generally a sadly accepted assumption that once a teacher in the public school system achieves tenure, they are in place for life. It doesn’t matter if you turn out to be a pedophile, a sexual predator or violent madman, thanks to the power of the teachers unions, your taxpayer funded paycheck is pretty much safe for life. At most, you might be sent to sit in a rubber room. Heck, in the current case of Sean Shaynak, you can collect your pay while...

An associate of the Rev. Al Sharpton who is trying to open a glitzy upstate casino is an accused tax deadbeat — joining another pal of the preacher and the rev’s own National Action Network as targets of tax collectors. Alabama authorities claim that Greenetrack and its CEO, Luther Winn, Jr., owe $72 million in sales taxes and interest from electronic bingo game revenue in its betting facilities in that state. Winn, who serves on the network’s board, is the lead partner in the bid to open a massive 140-acre Grand Hudson casino resort near Stewart Airport in Orange County....

High school students in Long Island, N.Y., were recently denied the right to establish a club for Christian students by their school administrators. This marks the second time they’ve run into trouble. Last year, John Raney, a 17-year-old student at Ward Melville High School, created Students United in Faith as an extracurricular club where Christian and non-Christian students could come together to discuss faith and pursue hunger-relief charity projects. “I wanted to start the club because I thought it would provide a safe space for Christians to meet and talk about their faith,” Raney told Fox News. Administrators at Raney’s...

Beyond Colorado's headline-grabbing races for Senate and governor, the election for House District 59 is starting to generate its own news for being the most expensive race for state house in Colorado — all thanks to tough new gun control laws passed in 2013. The contest is between Democratic incumbent Mike McLachlan and Republican challenger J. Paul Brown for a small district centered on the rural city of Durango. According to the Durango Herald, the race has attracted "a waterfall of money" from outside groups, to the tune of at least $718,000 in a market where media and advertising are...

Holy Mustache, Batman! How can you tell when Thomas Friedman has given up and stopped bothering? Is there even a way to tell when a man who tried to turn global flattening into a thing has just given up?Friedman just wrote an article half of which consists of Batman quotes. The rest is his usual mix of random drivel, references to Fukuyama and staged wisdom. ItÂ’s why Orit Perlov, an Israeli expert on Arab social networks, keeps telling me that since I canÂ’t visit the Islamic State, which is known as ISIS, and interview its leaders, the next best...

We touched on the rather strange goings on in New York’s 21 congressional district race last weekend, but the fascinating candidate put up by the Democrats just keeps bringing me back to the well. Millionaire filmmaker Aaron Woolf met up with his opponent, Republican small businesswoman Elise Stefanik for a debate this week. In the midst of the action, he suddenly popped up with an observation which left everyone scratching their heads. “I don’t know if you have ever worked manually for a living like I have and I’m certain that [Green Party candidate Matt Funiciello] probably has-I don’t know...

He's been a loud, inescapable and expensive adversary of the New York Police Department for years: the publicity-loving lawyer who got huge settlements, and headlines, in some of the city's most notorious brutality cases. Now Sanford Rubenstein is getting unwelcome attention as a potential rape suspect. --snip-- A member of Sharpton's National Action Network has accused the 70-year-old attorney of sexually assaulting her at his luxury apartment after Sharpton's 60th birthday party

As rumors swirled that Noerdlinger would resign amid disclosures, de Blasio spokesman Phil Walzak released a statement late Friday afternoon praising Noerdlinger as 'a valued member of our team.' Another day, another embarrassing revelation about top City Hall aide Rachel Noerdlinger. And after nearly 10 hours of silence, another vow of support by Mayor de Blasio for his embattled appointee, a former top confidante of the Rev. Al Sharpton. The new disclosures concern an incident on Aug. 27, 2011, in Edgewater, N.J., when a cop spotted Hassaun McFarlan, Noerdlinger’s ex-con boyfriend, driving her Mercedes-Benz into oncoming traffic. ... After a police-assault conviction made her a rallying point for activists, an Occupy Wall Street protester was cleared Friday of charges stemming from another confrontation with police. Cecily McMillan was acquitted Friday of obstructing government administration, after her second trial this year. […] In the latest case, prosecutors said McMillan interfered with officers who’d stopped two accused fare-beaters in a Manhattan subway station in December 2013. McMillan claimed to be a lawyer, urged the two not to cooperate with police, hectored the officers and got in the way while shooting video when the officers took the two to a transit...
