CARSON CITY — There’s one thing everyone can agree on: It’s nice to get paid. The problem for lawmakers is that voting yourself a pay raise is a good way to end your political career. The mailer writes itself. Nevada legislators, though, are considering an ingenious — or devious — solution to raise their salaries. Assembly Joint Resolution 10* is a proposed constitutional amendment passed by the Legislature in 2015. Nevada’s constitution requires the Legislature to pass constitutional amendments in two consecutive sessions before sending it to voters in the next general election. Setting salaries of elected officials “unfortunately politicizes...

Pressured by abortion activists, a Republican U.S. Senator from Nevada flip-flopped on Monday and said he would “protect” Planned Parenthood. U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nevada, faced an angry crowd of abortion activists Monday at his town hall meeting, according to Nevada Public Radio. Many conservative lawmakers have faced hostile crowds at town hall meetings across the country in the past few months. Heller has a pro-life voting record. He recently voted to overturn an Obama administration rule that basically forced states to fund the Planned Parenthood abortion business. He also voted to confirm new U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch....

At :23 (John Lamb).....we are definitely way closer to a verdict down here. The jurors had a question and about 3:30 or just slightly before everybody rushed up to the courtroom to get this answer.......At :43... The prosecutors did not want this question public but we have a gist of what it was......At 1:32 (Brand Thornton) I understood it completely different. That they could take each individual charge against each individual defendant...At 2:24 Each defendant and each charge has to be unanimous, its not like they can find unanimous against all of them with one. They have to break it...

He said the agency is investigating the matter, saying "it was the previous administration that granted those gym memberships," which "were rather expensive."

A federal prosecutor on Wednesday characterized six Bunkerville protestors as militiamen who heeded rancher Cliven Bundy's call to arms, while defense attorneys used closing arguments to portray the men as peaceful demonstrators who asserted their constitutional rights. After six hours of impassioned arguments in a full-to-capacity Las Vegas courtroom, the first of three conspiracy trials resulting from the 2014 standoff in Bunkerville still had not been sent to the jury. Several more lawyers are scheduled to give their closing arguments when court resumes Thursday. .....Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Dickinson telling jurors that the night before the April 2014 standoff, federal...

Las Vegas health officials are turning to a familiar piece of equipment – the vending machine – into a first-in-the-nation experiment to automate the dispensing of clean needles for intravenous drug users. The program is a joint effort between the Southern Nevada Health District, the Nevada AIDS Research and Education Society and the private Trac-B Exchange company, which developed the machine. The idea is that making clean needles and other gear available will reduce the spread of bloodborne infections among drug users who would otherwise share the injection rigs.

The receipt for "fitness memberships for EPA employees" totaled $14,799.63 and was created in April 2016. The 24 Hour Fitness memberships include yoga and martial arts classes. The gym boasts "good vibes" where EPA employees can "sweat it out together." . . . The EPA office opted to purchase the expensive memberships from 24 Hour Fitness instead of utilizing the gym on UNLV's campus. The agency leases five buildings from the university. The university has a 184,000-square-foot Student Recreation and Wellness Center that is available to EPA employees for $25 per month.

Two months of testimony in the first Bunkerville standoff trial concluded Monday with a defendant's dramatic assertion that authorities sat in foxholes waiting to shoot protestors who arrived at the site where federal agents for days had been rounding up Cliven Bundy's cattle. The accusation was among the last statements Idaho resident Eric Parker made to the jury before he stepped down from the witness stand late morning..... He controlled the narrative for hours on Friday while his defense lawyer questioned him. But on Monday, a federal prosecutor pressed him about his decisions the day of the standoff, as well...

Strip away the emotions and moral concerns about the gun industry and what’s left is a multibillion-dollar business involving a highly competitive group of manufacturers whose existence depends on steady demand for their products. The problem is that they’ve glutted one of their biggest markets — the U.S., which is home to an estimated 300 million guns — while the percentage of Americans owning guns has hit a 40-year low. So how do they keep the cash registers ringing? By using fear-based marketing and public rhetoric spouted by their political lobbying mouthpiece, the National Rifle Association, to convince those who...

The rule defines eight categories of waters of the U.S. Six categories include traditional navigable waters, interstate waters, territorial seas (these three are called “jurisdictional waters”), impoundments of jurisdictional waters, “tributaries,” and “adjacent” waters. These are jurisdictional by rule in all cases, requiring no additional analysis in order to be regulated. To be adjacent, the rule uses the rubric of “neighboring,” which can be met by waters in the 100-year floodplain—meaning land which might be wet one out of every 100 days is a water of the U.S. and can be federally controlled. Texas coastal prairie wetlands are another type...

Federal prosecutors in Nevada have asked a judge to schedule the second Bunkerville conspiracy trial for rancher Cliven Bundy, sons Ammon Bundy and Ryan Bundy and other leading defendants in the 2014 armed standoff near the family ranch for June 5 or later. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Myhre urged the court to set a definitive date to help lawyers on both sides prepare for the second trial and assist witnesses in making travel arrangements. The request comes as the prosecutors are still in the initial trial of six co-defendants that began Feb. 6 and has lasted nearly two months..... In...

"I give my word, my honor that I will appear at a time designated by the court," Hunt told U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown. Idaho gun enthusiast Eric Parker banked in his commitment to self-defense when he stepped to the witness stand and tried to convince jurors he played no role in a conspiracy to bully federal agents....... Parker said he arrived at the highway bridge thinking he was going to watch Bundy's cows get released. Protestors were told at a morning rally that the Bureau of Land Management--after days of clashes with the rancher's supporters--decided to abandon its operation to impound cattle from public land. But when he arrived at the impoundment site, Parker said, he noticed a militant and heavily armed group...
