It was a rough morning for U.S. attorneys arguing the federal government’s case against Ammon Bundy, Ryan Bundy and six other defendants accused of conspiring to occupy an Oregon wildlife refuge. A visibly frustrated Judge Anna Brown struck from the record a previous ruling that effectively allowed evidence from defendants’ Facebook accounts into next month’s trial. Despite calling an assistant U.S. attorney, two legal assistants and an FBI agent as witnesses, prosecutors weren’t able to explain to the court how protected information from 11 Facebook accounts used by defendants ended up being shared as part of discovery. Judge Brown ordered...

Hillary Clinton is leading Donald Trump by two percentage points in the swing state of Nevada, according to a poll released Thursday. The Suffolk University poll shows 44% of likely Nevada voters said they support Clinton, the Democratic nominee, and 42% said they support Trump, the Republican nominee. …

Donald Trump’s team can use a bit of good news from a poll, and Suffolk’s survey of Nevada might just brighten their day — a bit, anyway. The poll, conducted Monday through Wednesday this week among 500 likely voters, shows Hillary Clinton in the lead, but only by two points, 44/42. Given the trends of the past three weeks, and Nevada’s electoral history, that’s a relatively positive outcome: A new Suffolk University poll of Nevada voters shows a statistical dead heat in the presidential race, with Democrat Hillary Clinton leading Republican Donald Trump 44 percent to 42 percent. Clinton’s strong...

They came in buses, from Utah and elsewhere, excited to help elect Mitt Romney in 2012. Spanish-speaking Mormon volunteers — former missionaries at ease making phone calls, knocking doors, and pitching strangers on the street — were a unique resource for the Republican nominee in the key southwest swing states. In East Las Vegas, a Latino working-class neighborhood where the Romney campaign opened the first Republican office, around 10% of the volunteers were Spanish-speaking Mormons, according to former Romney aides. Outreach efforts in Colorado were similarly infused with bilingual Latter-day Saints. Romney’s hardline immigration stance made the candidate a tough...

On election night 2016, the nation’s attention might be focused on Nevada, where Republicans have their most promising, and probably their only realistic, chance to capture a Democratic Senate seat. Harry Reid, Senate minority leader, is retiring, and Republicans’ hopes of retaining their majority might depend on Joe Heck replacing Reid. He is a strong candidate for his party, as his opponent is for hers. Catherine Cortez Masto is a former two-term state attorney general who won reelection even against the 2010 anti-Democratic wave. She would be the Senate’s first Latina. Heck, an emergency room physician and a brigadier general...

“As the people of Nevada learn the truth about Question One gun control initiative, opposition mounts," said Robert Uithoven, campaign director of NRA Nevadans for Freedom. "Governor Sandoval knows that Question One would not prevent criminals from obtaining firearms and would instead cost Nevadans time, money, and freedom. We’re excited to have Governor Sandavol join the growing coalition of Nevadans committed to defending freedom from Bloomberg’s extreme gun control agenda.” Question 1, financed by former New York City Mayor and anti-gun activists Michael Bloomberg, is part of Bloomberg’s national gun-control agenda that will make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens...

Nevada advocates against domestic violence on Wednesday reaffirmed their support for Question 1, a ballot initiative proposing to expand firearm background checks to private-party sales and transfers. Survivors and activists gathered at the Henderson women’s shelter Safe House to discuss the ballot measure, which Nevada voters will decide in November, and the prevalence of domestic violence in the state. For the period from 2010 to 2014, Nevada ranked fifth nationally in the number of women killed by an intimate partner, according to a study released this year by Everytown for Gun Safety and the Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence. During...

Tight races in two Southwestern states and wide margin in Virginia show how 2016 could continue to be an election of surprises. Hillary Clinton holds a narrow two-point edge over Donald Trump in Nevada, earning 43% against Trump’s 41% among likely voters in a swing state George W. Bush and Barack Obama both won twice. In Arizona, which has only voted Democratic once since 1948, it’s Donald Trump with the slim lead, topping Clinton 44% to 42%. But Clinton could be headed for a relative blow-out in Virginia, where she leads Trump 49% to 37%. In 2008 Obama turned Virginia...

There was a distinct look of fear on Hillary Clinton’s face as animal rights protesters held up a large banner and yelled near her rally stage in Las Vegas today while the candidate spoke. Secret Service agents sprang into action, with one putting his arm around Clinton. “You’re okay,” he could be heard saying on the hot mic. “Keep talking,” he said as she stood in silence. “We’ll handle it. We’re not going anywhere,” he said. “Keep talking.” “Okay, we’ll keep talking,” Clinton told the audience. She then said the protesters were actually there to focus on Donald Trump. “Apparently...

Wildfires were burning Monday in seven Western U.S. states, from California's famed Big Sur region to tribal towns and hamlets near Reno, Nevada. Evacuations were ordered in Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Wyoming and firefighters were trying to stop a Washington blaze from reaching a thickly forested security zone at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

Hillary Clinton has received a small convention bounce, lifting the Democratic nominee back into a narrow lead over Donald Trump across 11 swing states, according to the latest wave of the YouGov/CBS News 2016 Battleground Tracker. The findings are part of the latest installment of a panel study polling likely voters in competitive states before and after each party’s nominating convention. In the latest survey, Clinton receives the support of 43% of likely voters, a two-point post-convention bounce equal to the two-point bounce Donald Trump received last week. Clinton gained most of her new support from undecided and third-party voters,...

If you’re thinking about breaking the law and prefer not to spend any time in court, you may want to check into registering as a Democrat. The latest person in our hit parade of folks who appear to have broken the law but somehow fail to attract the interest of the authorities is none other than soon to be retired Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid. Before we get too carried away here, though, it’s worth noting that the law which Reid is accused of breaking isn’t exactly up there on the list with Grand Theft Auto. His office sent out...

Donald Trump holds a modest lead over Hillary Clinton in Nevada, according to a new KTNV-TV 13 Action News/Rasmussen Reports poll. The poll of 750 likely voters shows the Republican presidential candidate leading Clinton by 43 to 38 percent in Nevada, with eight percent supporting Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson. The KTNV-TV 13 Action News/Rasmussen Reports also reports Republican Senate candidate Joe Heck with a nine point lead over his Democratic opponent, Catherine Cortez Masto. The poll was conducted by Rasmussen Reports between July 22 and 24, immediately following the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. Rasmussen historically has a...
