The New England Patriots are the professional sports team most closely associated with President Donald Trump, so it was fitting that they were the first championship team to visit Trump in the White House. Many of them visited on Wednesday, anyway. Many others skipped the trip. Perhaps the most awkward moment of a fairly routine speech by a president to a winning team – including owner Robert Kraft presenting Trump with a No. 45 Patriots jersey and coach Bill Belichick giving him a helmet – came when Trump mentioned receiver Danny Amendola for his fourth-down catch in Super Bowl LI. Amendola was...

Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots tight end who was serving a life sentence for murder without the possibility of parole, hanged himself in himself in his prison cell, Massachusetts Department of Corrections officials say. Officers at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Mass., found Hernandez, 27, hanging from a bedsheet at about 3:05 a.m. Wednesday. They attempted lifesaving techniques and he was taken to UMass Memorial Health Alliance Hospital in Leominster, where he was pronounced dead.

Retired Pro Bowl tight end Todd Heap accidentally struck and killed his 3-year-old daughter Friday afternoon while moving his truck, according to Mesa, Arizona, police. The incident happened in the driveway of a home in the gated community of Las Sendas. Police responded to a car/pedestrian accident about 3:45 p.m. and were told the girl was on the driveway when Heap moved the truck forward and hit her. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died, police said.
  • Hernandez found NOT GUILTY

BOSTON (WHDH) - After six days of deliberations, the jury in the double-murder trial of Aaron Hernandez found him not guilty for the 2012 murders of two men in Boston’s South End. The former New England Patriots tight end was on trial for the killings of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu after one of them accidentally spilled a drink on him at the Cure Lounge. Throughout the trial, his lawyers argued that it was Hernandez’s friend, Alexander Bradley, who shot the men in a drug deal while parked at a stop light.

NaVorro Bowman is confident “someone” will sign former 49ers teammate Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick has been a free agent since March 3 without being publicly connected to any potential suitor. Should Kaepernick be on a roster, even if it’s not the 49ers’ as coach Kyle Shanahan forges ahead with free agent acquisitions Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley? “I think he should,” Bowman replied Monday at the start of the 49ers’ offseason program. “He’s proven he can play at this level. You know, he’s made a choice that’s kind of had a little backlash from it. Running back Carlos Hyde also expressed...

Olivia Munn and Aaron Rodgers have reportedly split up. A source told People magazine: 'They have amicably ended their relationship of three years. They remain close friends and wish nothing but the best for each other moving forward.' The star, 36, and the quarterback, 33, began dating at the end of 2014 - but haven't had the easiest ride as Aaron didn't speak to his father for two years after his family expressed disdain over the relationship.
  • The NFL used to shun Las Vegas. Why is it moving a team there?

The gambling industry here and football have been seeing each other secretly since the 1960s. But Monday’s 31-to-1 vote by league owners to permit the Oakland Raiders to move to Las Vegas with (for now) no stipulations about sports betting is a sign that the league’s and city’s status has changed from “it’s complicated” to “in a relationship.” The reason? Las Vegas has been sanitized a bit, and the National Football League isn’t as clean-cut as it once appeared. So what changed before Monday’s vote? Las Vegas is no longer a desert oasis dominated by gambling; it’s a major metropolitan...

Donald Trump was right. You can't trust reporters. They'll take the shirt off your back. Or in this case, they'll take the jersey out of your travel bag, if not your back, the way they did to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. It amounted to the same thing the day that the awesome, relic-like, sweat-stained jersey No. 12 went missing. It was like losing a priceless Picasso or a Chagall painting, Patriots owner Bob Kraft said of the missing jersey, falling just short of comparing the caper to the great Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist back in 1990.

Roger Goodell recently declared the NFL remained opposed to legalized sports wagering. The NFL commissioner’s reasons were trite, outdated and mocked by experts, but when has that ever stopped the NFL from doubling down (gambling term) on a policy? If Goodell says the league is opposed to sports wagering, then you rest assure that … … Welcome the Las Vegas Raiders … … Yeah, there is nothing that $750 million can’t buy. Whatever. Goodell is just the talking head for the league. His bosses voted Monday by the tune of 31-1 that the Raiders should move from Oakland to Las...

The Oakland Raiders will move to Las Vegas after garnering enough votes from NFL owners on Monday to relocate to Southern Nevada. The Raiders received 31 of 32 votes to approve the move, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Twenty-four votes were needed. The Miami Dolphins were the only team to vote against the move, a source told Schefter.

Unclear if it's connected to this investigation.update-grey-gray-barThe man who jacked Tom Brady's Super Bowl jerseys may have ALSO stolen Von Miller's helmet and cleats from Super Bowl 50 ... so says Jay Glazer. Is one of the U.S. Senate’s top Republican squishes on his way out in 2020? Rumor is, Senator Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn. is considering retirement. The 76-year-old moderate has served as governor of Tennessee, secretary of education under President George H.W. Bush, and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002. He has run for president twice. Were Alexander to run for and win reelection in 2020, he would be 86 at the end of his term. But should he choose not to, former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning has been mentioned as a potential candidate.

“First, some teams genuinely believe that he can’t play. They think he’s shot. I’d put that number around 20 percent. “Second, some teams fear the backlash from fans after getting him. They think there might be protests or (President) Trump will tweet about the team. I’d say that number is around 10 percent. Then there’s another 10 percent that has a mix of those feelings. “Third, the rest genuinely hate him and can’t stand what he did [kneeling for the national anthem]. They want nothing to do with him. They won’t move on. They think showing no interest is a...

It's more than a week into free agency and Colin Kaepernick is still unemployed. Remember, this is a quarterback who played in the Super Bowl only four years ago, yet now it appears he can't get a look from teams. So I set out to discover, once and for all, what teams think of the 29-year-old former Niner. "He can still play at a high level," one AFC general manager said. "The problem is three things are happening with him. "First, some teams genuinely believe that he can't play. They think he's shot. I'd put that number around 20 percent....
  • His NFL-to-prison cautionary tale leaves students transfixed. Ryan Leaf's story, in his own words

The football world was deeply divided 19 years ago when the Indianapolis Colts were deciding whether to use the No. 1 draft pick in the NFL draft on Tennessee’s Peyton Manning or Washington State’s Ryan Leaf. There were respected evaluators on both sides of the argument. The Colts chose Manning, launching a Hall of Fame-caliber career that included five most-valuable-player awards and Super Bowl victories with Indianapolis and Denver. Leaf was the No. 2 pick by San Diego — one spot ahead of future Hall of Fame defensive back Charles Woodson — and essentially flamed out in his rookie season,...

National Football League teams violated federal laws governing prescription drugs, disregarded guidance from the Drug Enforcement Administration on how to store, track, transport and distribute controlled substances, and plied their players with powerful painkillers and anti-inflammatories each season, according to sealed court documents contained in a federal lawsuit filed by former players. The sealed material, which was reviewed by The Washington Post, provides a rare look into the league’s relationship with drugs and how team doctors manage the pain inherent in a bruising sport to keep players on the field.

Dallas is trying to get something in return for Romo before free agency officially begins With the clock ticking toward NFL free agency, the Dallas Cowboys are making a last-second push to try and trade Tony Romo, according to a report from Chris Mortensen of ESPN. It was believed the Cowboys had informed Romo they were planning to release him , but life moves pretty fast in the NFL, and it took a sudden swerve sideways for Dallas and Romo.
