Retired Pro Bowl tight end Todd Heap accidentally struck and killed his 3-year-old daughter Friday afternoon while moving his truck, according to Mesa, Arizona, police.

The incident happened in the driveway of a home in the gated community of Las Sendas. Police responded to a car/pedestrian accident about 3:45 p.m. and were told the girl was on the driveway when Heap moved the truck forward and hit her.

She was taken to a local hospital, where she died, police said.

So tragic. My mother’s friend did that to a neighbor’s child back in the ‘40s. He was never the same until the day he died decades later.

Years ago, a neighbor of mine had a similar tragedy. He left his home to make a quick trip to the store. He ended up backing right over his young son who was evidently playing with toy cars right behind his pickup in the driveway.

It's easy to judge these kind of things but tragic accidents do happen to the best of us. He was not drunk or anything. He just didn't look behind his truck and his son did not realize that the starting engine meant imminent danger to himself.

That was 20 years ago. The neighbor was devastated and he and his wife quickly put the house up for sale and moved out of state. Hope they are doing well.

Professional drivers walk completely around their vehicles before driving, checking for obstacles as well as low tires, etc.

All drivers would be wise to do the same.

True. I just don’t know how one might ever live with it, let alone get past it.

Faith, deep hard-earned faith, is all that one can hold to.

May God hold them close in return, and give them strength.

You're right - the pain is unimaginable. Pray he has, and keeps, faith. His ONLY consolation might be the fact that she immediately went to heaven and will celebrate Easter with Christ.

I am very familiar with a family that had a similar accident. Dear Lord please comfort these people.

The teenage son of Christian music star Stephen Curtis Chapman backed over his little sister & killed her. Chapman wrote a couple of songs about her.

I always garage my car at home. I back into the garage so that I don't have to back out of it, where my vision is very limited.

He just didn't look behind his truck and his son did not realize that the starting engine meant imminent danger to himself.

In many of these cases, people actually are looking behind, ahead, or whatever; the small child just happens to be in a "blind spot" because their height is so short versus the height of the vehicle hood or tailgate.

That's why these new proximity sensor systems in vehicles are so great. They will save a lot of lives...

Same applies to mariners... walk the length of your vessel on both sides of the deck and then check on the engine room (you may run into a party there...engines cover the noise and the three Detroit Diesel 12V92's air intakes sanctify the atmosphere)

I’m not a big fan of those back up alarms they put in pick ups that detect objects in the path behind you, but something like this helps you understand what they’re aiming at.

Agreed. My newest cars have backup video and also those sensors that tell you when it is safe to change lanes or when you are over the white lines on a highway (without blinkers being on). Amazing technology. I’m all for it.

Prayers to them. This happened to a family in my old neighborhood and the father never forgave himself, and the mom didn’t forgive him either. Dreadful all around for all.
