A string of leaks to the media protecting Darren Wilson are part of a very big problem. Here's the sordid history. On those rare occasions when it makes a real effort to grapple with the raw brutality of Jim Crow, the American mainstream media usually returns to a particular set of images that, by their very nature, are jarring and extraordinary: the burning cross, the hangman’s knot, the Klansman on horseback. This isn’t a bad thing; you can’t understand Jim Crow without understanding the significance of the Klan, for example. But it’s not an entirely good one, either. The problem...

Stephanie Nebehay October 25, 2014 The death toll from the Ebola epidemic rose to 4,922 out of 10,141 known cases in eight countries through Oct. 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday. The virus, which reached Mali through a two-year-old girl who died on Friday, now threatens Ivory Coast, having infected people virtually all along its borders with Guinea and Liberia. Ivory Coast is the world's biggest cocoa producer. The Ebola outbreak has hurt the economic growth that has been raising living standards in the region. The three worst-hit countries of West Africa -- Guinea, Liberia and Sierra...

Since all economic theories – even Marxism and socialism – recognize that capital formation is a key to long-run growth, higher wages, and improved living standards, it obviously doesn’t make sense to penalize saving and investment.Yet that’s exactly what happens because of double taxation in the United States, as can be seen by this rather sobering flowchart. So how can we fix the problem? The best answer, particularly in the long run, is to shrink the burden of government spending so that there’s no pressure for punitive tax policies.Good reform is also possible in the medium run. Policy makers could implement...

Scare-mongering by opportunistic politicians and media are hiding the real killer in our midst: the pervasiveness of guns, which kills up to 30,000 Americans every year. It really isn't a tall order to scare Americans these days, and in particular our delicate representatives in Washington. Ebola, ISIS, 10-year old children on our southern border. This is the stuff of nightmares, and no amount of money is too big to spend on keeping them all far, far away, even though they've killed virtually no Americans. Lindsey Graham can barely get ISIS out of his mouth before blowing his shpadoinkle and screeching...

JERUSALEM, Israel -- The Associated Press is facing some heat for its offensive headline following Thursday's terror attack in Jerusalem. The AP's initial headline read, "Israeli Police Shoot Man in East Jerusalem," with no mention that police were responding to a terror attack. The vehicular attack injured seven people and killed three month-old Chaya Zissel Braun, who held dual U.S.-Israeli citizenship. After repeated complaints, AP changed the headline to "Car Slams Into East Jerusalem Train Station. And finally, AP acquiesed to complaints, changing it to "Palestinian Kills Baby at Jerusalem Station." But there are still calls for the wire service...

I spoke to the neighbor of the NYC Ebola doctor (turned patient) a couple of times, last night. Her fears are less about contracting the disease than having her family's names and photos splashed over the media, particularly those of her 16 year old daughter who is very talented, outgoing, and attends a high profile high school. The media has been unrelenting, but for the most part all promised not to mention her or her daughter’s names. One network is struggling, and say even without permission, they'll display a blurred photo of her daughter with her name. In this day and...

But...She should think of her fellow sufferers. Brittany Maynard is a 29-year-old woman who learned not long after her wedding that she had an aggressive brain tumour. She has therefore announced that she has chosen to die on November 1, taking advantage of Oregon’s assisted suicide law. A video that she made with the help of the leading assisted suicide organisation in the US, Compassion and Choices, has been a huge hit on YouTube. An Australian whose wife died of a similar disease, Denis Strangman, has written her an open letter below. * * * * * I am...

India has opted to buy Israel's Spike anti-tank guided missile, a defence ministry source said on Saturday, rejecting a rival U.S. offer of Javelin missiles that Washington had lobbied hard to win. India will buy at least 8,000 Spike missiles and more than 300 launchers in a deal worth 32 billion rupees ($525 million), the source said after a meeting of India's Defence Acquisition Council. "National security is the paramount concern of the government," the source quoted Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, who also holds the finance portfolio, as telling the procurement panel. "All hurdles and bottlenecks in the procurement process...

Militant Islamists don't just hate George Bush, baseball, and apple pie, they hate Canadians too. Islamists hate as a fundamental characteristic, and that hate is driven by the orthodox doctrines of their bestial death-cult. They even hate Barack Obama. Despite his world-wide apology tour and his dutiful obeisance to all things Islam, the violent jihadists continue to wage war against the Great Satan. It matters not if his face is white or black, the American Devil refuses to bow the knee to sharia law and the prophet of Islam—this is all the reason they need for hate. Even if you...

Free Republic is here to defend our Republic and our Constitution and to continue the never-ending fight for the founding principles and our God-given Liberty. We are not going to roll over for the homosexual agenda or the Marxist/fascist ruling class who are trying to "fundamentally transform" America. No surrender, no retreat!! Hold the line!! Our God-given unalienable rights are not subject to debate, negotiation or compromise and that includes our religious freedom and the free exercise thereof!! Do not give-up your rights to free speech, free religion. Do not give up your guns. Do not give up on traditional...

The vast majority of political journalists -- and I include some of my conservative colleagues -- are missing a very big story. The Republicans are going to recapture the Senate, picking up more seats than most any forecaster expects. And the House GOP is going to add to its majority. But then comes the big story: The beginning of a new conservative revolution. The idea that nothing much will change if the GOP captures the whole Congress is just plain wrong. The politics and policies in Washington are about to change in a major way. Obama may still be president....

Classic muscle cars like a vintage 1965 Ford Mustang are pretty desirable. World Series tickets, apparently, are even more desirable. That appears to be one man’s thinking, anyway. Kansas City Royals fan Jerod Main has decided to sell his 1965 ‘Stang for $24,000, which might seem like a bargain for such a classic, but it should be enough to cover the cost of tickets for his family of six, which are starting at just over $400, according to a quick Stubhub search. Those prices are subject to change, of course, and tickets might be selling for even more after last...

SECULARISM The aggressive secularization of America As an American I have watched with sadness, the eroding of our Christian values and standards of living. When I was in grade school, each day was begun with the reading of the Bible, broadcast over the intercom system (yes, we had the technology when I was little). At my graduation from high school, there were two public gatherings in the gym, the first being the baccalaureate service, where the minister chosen by the seniors gave an inspirational address, and religious hymns and patriotic songs were sung. The second public gathering was the actual...

Back in 1970, when I got involved in the first Earth Day and nascent environmental movement, we had real pollution problems. But over time, new laws, regulations, attitudes and technologies cleaned up our air, water and sloppy industry practices. By contrast, todayÂ’s battles are rarely about the environment. As Ron Arnold and I detail in our new book, Cracking Big Green: To save the world from the save-the-Earth money machine, todayÂ’s eco-battles pit a $13.4-billion-per-year U.S. environmentalist industry against the reliable, affordable, 82 percent fossil fuel energy that makes our jobs, living standards, health, welfare and environmental quality possible. A new...

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – In a recent statement, Michael Brown’s mother asked that her son not be part of self-serving business or political actions as she pleaded that he be remembered for the good. A reported assault and theft this past weekend may dramatically underscore that sentiment. It happened Saturday night, October 18th, at about 8:15 pm in the parking lot of Red’s BBQ. It`s the corner of Canfield and West Florissant, just blocks from where Michael Brown was shot and killed. Police sources tell us Brown`s Grandmother, Pearlie Gordon, along with Brown`s Cousin Tony Petty, were selling t-shirts...
