The death toll from the Ebola epidemic rose to 4,922 out of 10,141 known cases in eight countries through Oct. 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday.
The virus, which reached Mali through a two-year-old girl who died on Friday, now threatens Ivory Coast, having infected people virtually all along its borders with Guinea and Liberia.
Ivory Coast is the world's biggest cocoa producer. The Ebola outbreak has hurt the economic growth that has been raising living standards in the region.
The three worst-hit countries of West Africa -- Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone -- account for the bulk of the world's worst Ebola outbreak, recording 4,912 deaths out of 10,114 cases, the WHO said in its update.
The overall figures include outbreaks in Nigeria and Senegal, deemed by the WHO to be now over, as well as isolated cases in Spain, the United States and a single case in Mali.
But the true toll may be three times as much: by a factor of 1.5 in Guinea, 2 in Sierra Leone and 2.5 in Liberia, while the death rate is thought to be about 70 percent of all cases.
The WHO has said that many families are keeping infected people at home rather than putting them into isolation in treatment centers, some of which have refused patients due to a lack of beds and basic supplies.

Whether it is possible for Americans to become infected with Ebola or not, Ebola did highlight the incompetence of this regime and all of the Obama cronies currently running it. THAT is not letting a good crisis go to waste.

I got the Asian flu in 1969 and was in bed for three weeks. I obviously survived and haven't had a cold or the flu since then. Nature's reward for an American-nutured immune system that kept me alive.
Those epidemics didn't start in China for no reason. It is the filthiest place on the planet...yes, filthier than Africa, the middle east and India. I saw and smelled it.

It’s worse, considering that Mali is jihadist territory. Terrorists staged a coup to turn Mali into an Islamic State, and elections were put on hold. There is now the risk that jihadists may obtain ebola. American soldiers in neighboring Liberia makes this look worse.

With all due respect Mam, you are out of your mind. This is s highly contagious pathogen with 90% mortality rate in Africa. The fact that those people didn’t come down with Ebola is simply fortuitous. It wipes out entire villages in Africa and its clear that our knowledge of its transmissibility is not perfect otherwise NO trained healthcare workers would have come down with it.
Exposing the American public to this is inexcusable, insane and criminal.
That McConnell would make such an insane comment demonstrated both his unsuitability for office and why his opposition to Obama’s agenda had been so ineffective.
